Official condemnations
(O1) [Parlement of Paris], Arrêt du parlement du 18 août 1770, Paris 1770. Multiple editions produced. Official text accompanying the condemnation of La Contagion sacrée, Dieu et les hommes, Discours sur les miracles de Jésus-Christ, Examen critique des apologistes de la religion chrétienne, Examen impartial des principales religions du monde, Le Christianisme dévoilé, and the Système de la nature. Accompanied by:
(O1i) Antoine-Louis Séguier (1726–92; avocat-général, parlement of Paris), Réquisitoire de M. Séguier, avocat-général au parlement de Paris, sur lequel est intervenu l’arrêt de parlement du 18, août 1770, qui condamne à être lacérés & brûlés différents livres ou brochures, comme impies, blasphématoires & séditieux, tendant à détruire toute idée de la divinité, à soulever le peuple contre la religion & le gouvernement, à renverser tous les principes de la sûreté & de l’honnêteté publique & à détourner les sujets de l’obéissance due à leur souverain, Paris 1770 [35pp. in 4o]. Séguier’s ‘réquisitoire’ condemned rather than refuted d’Holbach’s work. It contained a précis of the Système de la nature.
(O2) [Assembly of the Clergy], Avertissement du clergé de France, assemblé à Paris, par permission du roi, aux fidèles du royaume sur les dangers de l’incrédulité, Paris 1770. Multiple editions produced. Official response of the Assembly of the Clergy to the appearance of the Système de la nature and several other irreligious texts. Many of the archbishops also produced their own introductions to the text, which were printed locally. These included:
