Summary
In this chapter, we present an introductory description of the particular biomes, providing a background to the patterns of succession. Our primary sources for information about the world biomes were Archibold (1995) and Breckle (2002), and for North America, Barbour and Billings (2000). We use the term biome in a broad sense as a widely distributed ecosystem characterized by vegetation with similar life forms and with occurrence, structure, and functioning of the biome largely determined by macroclimate and seasonality.
