Summary
Minoru Miki wrote in his Afterword that, as a result of his use of Japanese traditional instruments in his compositions and the rapidly increasing number of pieces being written for Japanese instruments, he decided to write this book. Due to the success of his and other major Japanese composers—those both preceding and following him—in promulgating such a compositional undertaking, Miki thought it important to bring to the reader's attention a sampling of such works written by others.
This appendix of composers and the works they have written for traditional Japanese instruments includes both Japanese and non-Japanese composers. Thousands of compositions for traditional Japanese instruments have been written, so this appendix is, by necessity, very selective. The choices have been made based on the availability of these works on CD or in published scores; even so, that body of compositions is also limited—by time-frame as well as by easy accessibility. It is now possible to have such a select appendix due to the ubiquitous World Wide Web through which the reader can add exponentially to it.

Composers
An asterisk (*) beside the name of a composer indicates an individual who has an appreciable number of works for traditional instruments that are not listed here. Composers of works for traditional instruments not included in this appendix can be found on the Web or through information from the JFC and other sources (see below).
Because most works for traditional instruments have not been published, composers are often willing to provide scores upon request. Some of them are listed below. Others can be found on the Web or through contact information from the JFC.
