Summary
When Peri wrote this paean to paper, Italian merchants had regularly been employing paper for more than three hundred years. In this work, Peri describes at length the various habits and practices that the good merchant has to pursue in order to ensure the profitability of his business. A great many of these have to do with record-keeping, the mundane and routine tasks of recording transactions with pen and paper, deemed essential for effective commerce.
