1758 29 September, Horatio Nelson born at Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk
1767 26 December, Catherine Nelson, Nelson's mother, dies
1771 Joins HMS Raisonable as a Midshipman August, sails to the West Indies in the Mary Anne, a merchant ship
1773 June to September, joins Arctic expedition Joins HMS Seahorse and sails to East Indies
1775 Invalided from his ship suffering from malaria. Returns to England War of American Independence begins
1777 April, passes examination for lieutenant Appointed to HMS Lowestoffe for service in the West Indies
1778 September, appointed first lieutenant of HMS Bristol December, appointed commander of HMS Badger
1779 June, promoted to post captain, appointed to command HMS Hinchinbrook
1780 Takes part in the Nicaraguan expedition (Capture of Fort San Juan) Falls ill and returns home to England
1781 Appointed to command HMS Albemarle. Convoy service in Baltic and Channel
1782 Joins North American Squadron. Visits Quebec and New York
1783 War of American Independence ends. Returns home. Visits France
1784 Appointed to command HMS Boreas. Sails for West Indies

1796 Continues to operate off NW coast of Italy 10 July, captures the island of Elba 19 September, captures island of Capraia Transfers to HMS Captain
1797 14 February, BATTLE OF ST VINCENT. Created Knight of Bath Promoted rear admiral. Hoists flag in HMS Theseus 24 July, failure of attack on Santa Cruz, Teneriffe. Loses right arm Returns home and goes to Bath to recover
