Summary
Pupillary reflex dilation is the enlargement of pupil diameter following an abrupt novel stimulus that results in arousal of either an awake or sleeping subject. The mechanism of production differs in awake subjects compared to those who are not awake. There are several drugs that alter the reflex and these are discussed. A full understanding of the reflex can provide information relating to opioid effects and to the efficacy of regional block during general anesthesia.
