A linearised, unsteady aerofoil theory is constructed which refers to an axis system which remains in the near vicinity of an aerofoil moving along an arbitrary flight path through a fluid at rest. The potential equation, the pressure equation and the boundary conditions at the aerofoil and in the wake are shown to be formally identical to those usually derived on the basis of an axis system translating uniformly through the fluid.
