1 The institute is located in Syracuse, Sicily and is a public foundation with academic purposes. It was founded in 1972 to provide specialized postgraduate educational and training programs and to conduct other scholarly activities in the criminal justice sciences. It was developed as a joint effort of the International Association of Penal Law, which is the scientific sponsor, and of the City, Province and Chamber of Commerce of Syracuse and the Sicilian Region, which are the financial sponsors.
