Piglet birth weight and within-litter birth weight variation are important for piglet survival and growth. Pre-mating diets may improve IGF-1 and follicle development during the weaning-to-oestrus interval (WEI) and subsequent piglet birth weight. The objective of this study was to modulate IGF-1 concentration during late lactation and the WEI of young sows by using specific pre-mating diets supplemented with microfibrillated cellulose (MF), l-carnitine (LC) or l-arginine (AR). A further objective was to investigate the relationship between IGF-1 and subsequent follicle development and oestrus and ovulation characteristics. In total, 56 first-parity and 20 second-parity sows in three consecutive batches were used for this experiment. Sows received daily either wheat (CON) or wheat plus MF, LC or AR at one of two supplementation levels (low and high) during last week of lactation and WEI. From weaning onwards, follicle and corpus luteum (CL) diameters were repeatedly measured with ultrasound. Blood samples were collected during the WEI for IGF-1 and on day 21 of pregnancy for progesterone analyses, respectively. Insulin-like growth factor-1 concentration, follicle diameter, oestrus and ovulation characteristics and CL diameter were not affected by pre-mating diets. Low IGF-1 class (≤156 ng/ml, N = 22) sows had smaller follicles at weaning (3.5 v. 3.8 mm, P < 0.05) and a longer weaning-to-ovulation interval (147.2 v. 129.8 h, P < 0.05) than high IGF-1 class sows. In first-parity sows, high loin muscle depth (LM) loss sows (≥8%, N = 28) had lower IGF-1 concentrations at weaning (167 v. 214 ng/ml, P < 0.05) compared to low LM loss sows (<8%, N = 28). However, after weaning, IGF-1 concentrations increased and did not differ between high LM loss and low LM loss sows. In conclusion, the different supplemented compounds in pre-mating diets did not improve IGF-1 concentrations around weaning in young sows. Furthermore, high body condition loss caused lower IGF-1 concentrations at weaning, but these levels rapidly recovered after weaning and were related to follicle development and the interval from weaning to ovulation.

Three replicates of three group sizes (six, 18 and 36) of grower pigs were housed with the same space allocation (0·66 m2 per pig), feeding and drinking space per animal. The animals were mixed and kept together for a period of 22 days. They were given food ad libitum, were weighed weekly and a record kept of the group food intake for the 22-day period. Weight at mixing had a significant effect on weight gains during the 1st week. There was a significant interaction between group size and replicates for weight gains; generally weight gains were lowest in the group size of 36 animals during the first 2 weeks, but in the 3rd week there was no difference between the group sizes. Sex had no effect on weight gains. The variation in weights between group members were significantly greater in the group size of 36 than in the group sizes of six and 18 at the start of the trial, but at the end of the trial there was no difference in the variances of weights in the three group sizes. There was no difference between the group sizes in the variances of the weight gains. There was a significant positive correlation (r = +0·36) between weight at mixing and weight gain for the group size of 18. Group size had no effect on food intake, but the food conversion efficiency of the animals in the group size of 36 was significantly poorer than in the group sizes of six and 18.

Phenotypic information about several pig meat quality traits on 334 Large White × Meishan F2 pigs was collected. Effects of the association of the FokI variants in the seventh intron of the skeletal muscle glycogen synthase (GYS1) gene and the PstI variants in the ninth intron of the palmitoyl acyl-CoA oxidase 1 (ACOX1) gene on the meat quality traits were examined on all pigs. The FokI variants of the GYS1 gene showed significant effects on pH of m. semipinalis capitis (P < 0.05). Linkage analysis indicated that the peak of the quantitative trait loci (QTL) curve was located around this marker for pH, but it did not reach significance (P > 0.05). The results may be due to several reasons such as linkage disequilibrium to the causal mutations, the limited number of animals or balance of another QTL or marker with negative effects. Significant effects of PstI variants of ACOX1 gene were also found on meat colour value and meat marbling score of both m. longissimus dorsi and m. biceps femoris (P < 0.05). Dominant effects for the affected traits at those two loci were significant except for meat marbling score of m. biceps femoris (P < 0.05). The results of this study give us some evidence for the potential of those dominant markers used in the marker-assisted selection of crossbreeding of the Large White pig sire lines and Meishan-derived synthetic dam lines.

1. Three experiments are reported, in which a total of seventy-two calves were weaned at 3 or 5 weeks of age and given concentrate mixtures containing either 19·2% or 11·9% crude protein, together with hay and water up to 12 weeks of age.

2. The performance of cross-bred calves weaned at 3 weeks of age and given concentrates ad libitum was significantly greater when the high-protein concentrate was used in Experiment 1.

3. In Experiment 2, in which Friesian heifer calves were weaned at 5 weeks and given concentrates ad libitum, the level of protein in the concentrates had no significant effect on live-weight gain from birth to 12 weeks. However, there was a tendency for the performance of calves given the concentrate containing 11·9% crude protein to be slightly inferior up to the age of 8 weeks.

4. When concentrate intake was restricted to 2 kg./day in Experiment 3, in which Friesian heifer calves were weaned at 5 weeks of age, the live-weight gain was significantly greater when the higher level of protein was given.

5. Daily increases in height at withers, heart girth and belly girth tended to be greater in all instances when the concentrate containing 19·2% crude protein was given, but significant differences between treatments occurred only in Experiment 3 for increase in heart girth and belly girth.

6. It is apparent from the results that the calf weaned at an early age needs to be given a concentrate containing more than 11·9% crude protein if maximum live-weight gain is to be achieved up to 8 weeks of age. The optimum protein content of the concentrate after this age seems to depend on the level of concentrate feeding. The relationship between energy and protein in determining production is discussed.

Postnatal muscle growth is dependent on satellite cell (SC) proliferation, differentiation and fusion to increase the DNA content of existing muscle fibres and thereby the capacity to synthesize protein. The purpose of the present study was to examine the ability of isolated SCs from low, medium and high weaning weight litter mates of pigs to proliferate and differentiate, and to affect protein synthesis and degradation after fusion into myotubes. At 6 weeks of age, SCs from the lowest weight (LW), medium weight (MW) and highest weight (HW) female pigs within eight litters were isolated. Thereby, eight cultures of SCs were established for each of the three weight groups within litter, representing three groups of SCs from pigs exhibiting differences in postnatal muscle growth performance. Proliferation was estimated as the number of viable cells at different time points after seeding. SC differentiation was evaluated by measuring the activity of the muscle-specific enzyme, creatine phosphokinase, and protein synthesis and degradation were measured by incorporation and release of 3H-tyrosine, respectively. A tendency towards a difference in proliferation between SC cultures was found (P = 0.09). This was evident as the number of viable cells at day 3 was lower in cultures from LW pigs than from HW (P < 0.05) and MW (P < 0.01) pigs. Differentiation was significantly different between cultures (P < 0.05). There was a significant difference between LW and MW cultures at 72 h (P < 0.05), and a tendency towards a difference between LW and HW cultures at 45 h (P = 0.07). Protein synthesis per μg protein or per μg DNA did not differ among SC cultures from LW, MW and HW pigs. Neither did protein degradation rate differ significantly among SC cultures from LW, MW and HW pigs. Overall, the results show that SCs from LW pigs seem to proliferate and differentiate at a slower rate than SCs from MW and HW pigs. The results found in this study show no difference in the ability of SCs to affect protein synthesis or degradation between SCs from litter mates exhibiting different growth rates in vivo.

Eleven maize silages with crude protein (CP) and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) ranging from 77 to 93 and 359 to 542 g/kg dry matter (DM) respectively, were used to study the relationship between ear content, chemical composition, fermentative characteristics, in vitro DM digestibility and ruminal degradation characteristics, on the one hand, and the voluntary DM intake by sheep or in vivo organic matter apparent digestibility (OM digestibility), on the other.

The silages were offered ad libitum to mature ewes given a daily supplement of 85 g of soya-bean meal. DM intake varied from 41·1 to 68·6 g DM per kg M0·75 daily. OM digestibility and NDF apparent digestibility were measured, using the same ewes in a period subsequent to that of voluntary intake measurement. The silages, in this case, were offered at a feeding level of 1·2 maintenance. OM digestibility and NDF apparent digestibility ranged from 0·622 to 0·757 and from 0·377 to 0·605, respectively. Rumen DM disappearance was measured by incubating samples in nylon bags in the rumen of three silage-fed rumen-cannulated wethers for 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h and by fitting the exponential model to the results. Potential degradabilities (defined as a + b) for DM ranged from 728 to 815 g/kg.

Accurate prediction of DM intake (r = 0·93; P < 0·01; residual s.d. = 3·9) and OM digestibility (r = 0·86; P < 0·01; residual s.d. = 0·022) was achieved using the soluble fraction (a) and the insoluble but fermentable matter (B) and the insoluble but potentially degradable fraction (b), respectively. However, looking for a compromise between accuracy and simplicity, reliability and inexpensiveness, ear content is proposed as a predictor of OM digestibility (r = 0·85; P < 0·01) and the pH and acetic acid concentration of the silages may be used as a predictor of DM intake (r = 0·80; P < 0·05).

The possible influence of social factors on the timing of puberty in the hind was investigated utilizing seasonally advanced (melatonin-treated) hinds and stags. Melatonin treatment of both sexes resulted in a significant advancement in the onset of pubertal ovarian activity (26 days, P < 0·001) and calving (27 days, P < 0·001) in the treated hinds and antler casting (25 days, P < 0·001) in the treated stags. Ovarian activity and calving were not influenced by melatonin treatment of the stags alone and similarly, antler casting was not affected by melatonin treatment of the hinds alone. However, a group of hinds without stags until after the onset of the breeding season, reached puberty later (5 days, P < 0·05) than hinds with stags, suggesting the presence of the male is important in determining the timing of puberty.

Oxidative stress occurs when oxidant production exceeds the antioxidant capacity to detoxify the reactive intermediates or to repair the resulting damage. Feed efficiency has been associated with mitochondrial function due to its impact on cell energy metabolism. However, mitochondria are also recognized as a major source of oxidants. The aim of this study was to determine lipid and protein oxidative stress markers, and gene and protein expression as well as activity of antioxidant enzymes in the liver of steers of divergent residual feed intake (RFI) phenotypes. Hereford steers (n = 111) were evaluated in post-weaning 70 days standard test for RFI. Eighteen steers exhibiting the greatest (n = 9; high-RFI) and the lowest (n = 9; low-RFI) RFI values were selected for this study. After the test, steers were managed together under grazing conditions until slaughter when they reached the slaughter body weight. At slaughter, hepatic samples were obtained, were snap-frozen in liquid nitrogen and stored at −80°C until analyses. Hepatic thiobarbituric acid reactive species and protein carbonyls were greater (P = 0.05) and hepatic 4-hydroxynonenal protein adducts tended (P = 0.10) to be greater for high- than low-RFI steers. Hepatic gene expression glutathione peroxidase 4, glutamate–cysteine ligase catalytic subunit and peroxiredoxin 5 mRNA was greater (P ≤ 0.05) and glutathione peroxidase 3 mRNA tended (P = 0.10) to be greater in low- than high-RFI steers. Hepatic protein expression and enzyme activity of manganese superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase enzyme activity tended (P ≤ 0.10) to be greater for low- than high-RFI steers. High-efficiency steers (low-RFI) probably had better hepatic oxidative status which was strongly associated with greater antioxidant ability near to the oxidant production site and, therefore, reduced oxidative stress of the liver. Decreased hepatic oxidative stress would reduce maintenance requirements due to a lower protein and lipid turnover and better efficiency in the use of energy.

The breeding scheme of a Swiss sire line was modeled to compare different target traits and information sources for selection against boar taint. The impact of selection against boar taint on production traits was assessed for different economic weights of boar taint compounds. Genetic gain and breeding costs were evaluated using ZPlan+, a software based on selection index theory, gene flow method and economic modeling. Scenario I reflected the currently practiced breeding strategy as a reference scenario without selection against boar taint. Scenario II incorporated selection against the chemical compounds of boar taint, androstenone (AND), skatole (SKA) and indole (IND) with economic weights of −2.74, −1.69 and −0.99 Euro per unit of the log transformed trait, respectively. As information sources, biopsy-based performance testing of live boars (BPT) was compared with genomic selection (GS) and a combination of both. Scenario III included selection against the subjectively assessed human nose score (HNS) of boar taint. Information sources were either station testing of full and half sibs of the selection candidate or GS against HNS of boar taint compounds. In scenario I, annual genetic gain of log-transformed AND (SKA; IND) was 0.06 (0.09; 0.02) Euro, which was because of favorable genetic correlations with lean meat percentage and meat surface. In scenario II, genetic gain increased to 0.28 (0.20; 0.09) Euro per year when conducting BPT. Compared with BPT, genetic gain was smaller with GS. A combination of BPT and GS only marginally increased annual genetic gain, whereas variable costs per selection candidate augmented from 230 Euro (BPT) to 330 Euro (GS) or 380 Euro (both). The potential of GS was found to be higher when selecting against HNS, which has a low heritability. Annual genetic gain from GS was higher than from station testing of 4 full sibs and 76 half sibs with one or two measurements. The most effective strategy to reduce HNS was selecting against chemical compounds by conducting BPT. Because of heritabilities higher than 0.45 for AND, SKA and IND and high genetic correlations to HNS, the (correlated) response in units of the trait could be increased by 62% compared with scenario III with GS and even by 79% compared with scenario III, with station testing of siblings with two measurements. Increasing the economic weights of boar taint compounds amplified negative effects on average daily gain, drip loss and intramuscular fat percentage.

The perspective of a possible ban on surgical castration of male pigs in the EU is a real challenge for pork production systems aiming at (very) high-quality products. Information was collected from a total of 272 situations in 16 European countries, including 170 situations related to EU protected designations (Database of Origin & Registration (DOOR) database) and 102 other situations related to high-quality products or differentiated production systems, in order to evaluate their potential sensitivity to the use of entire male pigs along four dimensions: BT_Inc, likelihood of increased levels of boar taint compounds compared with conventional production of entire males; BT_Per, extent to which (some of) the associated pork product(s) are susceptible to perception of boar taint by consumers; FatQQ, likelihood that the quality of (some of) the related products is decreased due to the lower fat quantity and quality in entire males; Manag, increased likelihood of animal management and welfare problems compared with conventional production of entire males. Situations corresponding to EU protected designations (DOOR situations) were on average more sensitive to entire male production but 11% of the non-DOOR situations were highly potentially sensitive, whereas one-third of the DOOR situations had low potential sensitivity. In total, 37% of the situations where castration is not formally specified as mandatory exhibited high potential sensitivity to entire male production. Three main patterns of situations were identified via ascending hierarchical clustering. A first pattern including 31% of the DOOR situations and 74% of the other ones, had potentially no increased risk compared with conventional production of entire males. A second pattern including 28% of the DOOR situations and 16% of the other ones had a high, moderate and low potential sensitivity for FatQQ, BT_Inc and Manag, respectively. The third pattern including 41% of the DOOR situations and 11% of the other situations had high potential sensitivity for BT_Inc and FatQQ, associated with moderate to high sensitivity for Manag. The approach used to evaluate the sensitivity to entire male pig production from the limited information collected for this study has many limitations. More precise approaches using more specific information are needed to evaluate the actual sensitivity of individual situations to the use of entire male pigs. Still, the present study provides a first global insight on the capacity of European production systems aiming at high-quality products to use entire male pigs as an alternative to surgical castration.

Twenty-four multiparous ewes were used to test the hypothesis that synchronizing the hourly rate of release of energy and nitrogen in the rumen would optimize milk production. Three diets were formulated using the in situ degradability of the food ingredients, to differ in their rate of organic matter (OM) and nitrogen (N) release in the rumen. All diets contained 400 g grass silage per kg dry matter (DM) and were predicted to have a similar content of metabolizable energy (11·8 MJ/kg DM), metabolizable protein (102 g/kg DM), neutral-detergent fibre (365 g/kg DM) and daily ratio of N: OM supply to the rumen but differ in their hourly pattern of nutrient release to be either synchronous (S), asynchronous (A) or intermediate (I). The diets were offered ad libitum as a complete feed in a 3 × 3 Latin-square design consisting of three periods each of 28 days duration. Synchronizing the hourly supply of energy and N to the rumen did not significantly alter milk or milk fat yield (g/d), milk protein content (g/kg), DM intake (kg/day), total time spent eating or the number of meals per day. However, compared with ewes offered diets I or A, those offered diet S had a lower milk fat content (g/kg; P < 0·05) whilst protein yield (g/day) tended to be increased (P = 0·05). Animals offered the synchronous diet (S) had lower plasma urea concentrations throughout the day and significantly higher beta-hydroxybutyrate concentrations at 14:00 and 18:00 h than those offered diets I or A. In conclusion, synchronizing dietary energy and N supply to the rumen did not have a major effect on milk production in ewes.

Changes in physical body size during gestation were monitored using 529 sets of sow measurements. All sows were from the same herd and production system with a range in parity from 1 to 8. Sows were individually weighed, P2 backfat thickness was determined by ultrasound and morphometric measurements of body size were taken five times during gestation: day 0 (at service), day 25, day 50, day 80 and day 110. The morphometric measurements included sow height (from floor to last rib at the midline, from floor to ventral surface and from floor to hip), heart girth, depth of last rib, length (from snout to tail and from anterior scapula to tail) and width (at ham, at last rib and at shoulder). Regression analyses were used to model the relationship between day of gestation or parity number and morphometric measurements of body size. Regression equations were also developed to estimate sow weight from physical measurements, day of gestation and parity. As expected, sow dimensions, in general, increased as pregnancy progressed and also with increasing parity number. The relationships between day of gestation and body dimensions were described by linear and quadratic regression models, which had a range of adjusted R2 values up to 0.99. Similar relationships to parity number had a range of R2 values between 0.51 and 0.96. Sow depth, which can be used as an estimate of the width of the sow when lying, equalled the maximum width of the gestation stall (650 mm) at day 103 of gestation. However, by day 40 of gestation, predicted mean sow depth (570 mm) equalled the width at the rear of the crate. The implication of this is that after day 40 of gestation, the average sow was too wide for the rear of the crate when lying in a recumbent position. On day 110 of gestation, 95% of the mean sow body depths would be accommodated in stalls that were 674 mm wide; however, the range in body sizes with increasing parity number suggests the use of more than one stall width would be appropriate. Sow weight could be estimated with an adjusted R2 value of 0.81 and with a residual standard deviation (r.s.d.) of 16.5 kg using heart girth alone, or more accurately using a model with parity, day of gestation, P2 backfat depth and heart girth as the parameters (R2 = 0.89, r.s.d. 12.4 kg).

Nutrients are essential for the health and survival of human beings and animals. Also, they play a major role in enhancing reproductive efficiency. The aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of sodium butyrate (SB) on reproductive performance and colostrum composition in gilts. A total of 40 Large White×Landrace replacement gilts (at the age of 160 to 175 days) were fed either a standard diet (control group, n=20) or standard diet top dressed with encapsulated SB at the level of 500 mg/kg (SB group, n=20) from 1 month before mating to 7 days after farrowing. The rate of gilts regular return to estrus after insemination was lower in SB group than the control group. The total number of piglets born (P=0.179) and the litter weight at birth (P=0.063) did not differ between the two treatment groups. However, the mean BW at day 7 tended to be greater in SB group (P=0.051) and average daily gain of piglets was greater (P=0.011) compared with control group. Colostrum samples were collected at parturition and the concentrations of total protein (P=0.197), cholesterol (P=0.161) and lactose (P=0.923) were not influenced by SB supplementation. However, compared with control gilts, colostrum from SB-treated gilts contained lower triglyceride (P=0.050). Moreover, colostrum concentrations of prolactin (P=0.005) and leptin (P=0.006) were significantly lower in SB group. No significant differences were noted for the colostral concentrations of cortisol (P=0.899), thyroxine (P=0.891) or triiodothyronine (P=0.194). The concentration of lipopolysaccharide in colostrum was not influenced by SB supplementation (P=0.972). However, colostrum from SB-treated gilts had significantly lower tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) (P=0.030) and higher immunoglobulin A (IgA) (P=0.042). Collectively, SB supplementation could reduce the rate of gilts return to estrus, alter the composition of colostrum and enhance the growth rate of piglets. Moreover, SB could alter the immune function of newborn piglets through decreased production of TNFα and increased IgA concentration in colostrum.

The effect of a period of feeding on a high bulk food, upon the subsequent intake of foods of differing bulk content, was investigated in two experiments of the same design. The intention was to provide a severe test of the two current conceptual frameworks available for the prediction and understanding of food intake. In each experiment 40 male Manor Meishan pigs were randomly allocated to one of four treatment groups at weaning. Each experiment was split into two periods, P1 (12 to 18 kg) and P2 (18 to 32 kg). The treatments, all with ad libitum feeding, were: a control food (C) given throughout (treatment CC); a medium bulk food (M) given throughout (treatment MM); a high bulk food (H) given in P1 and then C in P2 (treatment HC); H given in P1 and M in P2 (treatment HM). C was based on micronized wheat with 13·4 MJ digestible energy and 243 g crude protein per kg fresh food. In experiment 1 M contained 350 g/kg and H 560 g/kg of unmolassed sugar-beet pulp and in experiment 2 M contained 500 g/kg and H 700 g/kg of unmolassed sugar-beet pulp. Framework 1 predicted that food intake on the medium bulk food (M) would not be increased, whereas framework 2 predicted that intake on M would be increased after a period of feeding on H, compared with when M was offered continuously.

In P1, both food intake (P < 0·01) and growth (P < 0·001) were severely limited on H compared with C. In experiment 1 growth was limited on M compared with C during the first 7 days of P1 (P < 0·01) only. In experiment 2 intake (P < 0·001) and growth (P < 0·001) on M were limited throughout P1, compared with C but not thereafter. Therefore, in neither experiment did M cause a lower growth rate than C from 18 to 32 kg. In experiment 1 there was full adaptation to M after about 10 days from 12 kg. In experiment 2 adaptation was complete by the end of the first 7 days from 18 kg.

In P2, food intake (P < 0·001) and live-weight gain (P < 0·05 and P < 0·001 in experiments 1 and 2, respectively) were increased on HC compared with CC. By the last 7 days of P2 intake was still higher (P < 0·01) but growth rate was no longer different to CC. Intake and gain were increased in P2 on HM compared with MM but, in general, these differences were small and not significant. In the first 7 days of P2, in experiment 1 pigs on HM had higher intakes (P < 0·001) and gains (P < 0·05) than those on MM, but in experiment 2 only intake was higher (P < 0·01) with no difference in gain. By the last 7 days of P2 there was no difference in either intake or gain between these two groups in either experiment. Pigs on HC increased intake by more than those on HM. There was, therefore, a significant interaction for food intake (P < 0·05, in experiment 1 and P < 0·001, in experiment 2) between prior and present food.

The unexpected failure of either M food to limit growth throughout the experimental period meant that the results of these experiments could not be used as a strong test to reject either one of the frameworks. However, the ability of the pigs to compensate on M was less than that on C. The data provide some evidence that under conditions of compensation foods such as M may be limiting. This is in closer agreement with the framework that predicted that consumption of a limiting food will not increase after a period of feeding on a high bulk food (framework 1).

Two experiments have been carried out to examine the effects on the intake and performance of finishing beef cattle of supplementing grass silages (perennial ryegrass) of medium and high digestibility (MD and HD respectively) with either extracted soya-bean meal or fish meal. In each experiment, the two silages were supplemented with (1) barley (107 g crude protein (CP) per kg dry matter (DM)), (2) a mixture of barley and soya-bean meal (187 g CP per kg DM) and (3) a mixture of barley and fish meal (182 g CP per kg DM) in a 2 × 3 factorial design. The MD silages were supplemented with 4·5 kg concentrates per head daily in each experiment and the HD silages with 2·75 and 2·5 kg per head daily in experiments 1 and 2 respectively. In experiments 1 and 2 respectively the diets were offered to 72 and 60 castrated male cattle of late maturing breed type which were initially 455 (s.e. 3·6) and 484 (s.e. 3·2) kg live weight; the MD silages contained 642 and 652 g digestible organic matter (DOM) per kg DM, 119 and 114 g CP per kg DM, 72 and 68 g NH3N per kg total N, and the HD silages contained 698 and 724 g DOM per kg DM, 158 and 148 g CP per kg DM, 58 and 51 g NH3N per kg DM. In experiment 1 for the MD silages supplemented with concentrates 1, 2 and 3 and the HD silages supplemented with concentrates 1, 2 and 3 respectively silage DM intakes were 5·47, 5·29, 5·24, 6·86, 6·77 and 6·76 (s.e. 0·129) kg/day; carcass gains 0·76, 0·74, 0·72, 0·75, 0·75 and 0·79 (s.e. 0·011) kg/day; subcutaneous fat depths 6·8, 7·8, 8·0, 9·2, 7·2 and 7·1 (s.e. 0·59) mm and areas of m. longissimus 21·5, 21·7, 23·2, 21·5, 22·4 and 21·9 (s.e. 0·78) mm2/kg carcass weight. Corresponding values for experiment 2 were 6·12, 6·05, 6·18, 7·65, 7·53 and 7·36 (s.e. 0·235) kg/day; 0·82, 0·88, 0·83, 0·85, 0·89 and 0·83 (s.e. 0·042) kg/day; 8·1, 7·8, 7·5, 9·1, 8·3 and 7·4 (s.e. 0·77) mm; 22·8, 21·9, 21·9, 21·0, 21·9 and 21·7 (s.e. 0·79) mm2/kg carcass weight. It is concluded that supplementation of MD or HD grass silages with soya-bean or fish meals did not significantly affect the intake, performance or carcass fatness of finishing beef cattle although the carcasses of animals offered HD silage supplemented with barley tended to be fatter than those from the other treatments.

Forty-two multiparous Large White sows were used to investigate the effect of diurnally fluctuating temperature (T) on lactation performance and feeding behaviour. The animals were allocated to one of the four thermic treatments: constant T at 25°C (25C) and 29°C (29C) or equal-mean diurnal cyclic T varying from 21 to 29°C (25V) and from 25 to 33°C (29V). Photoperiod was fixed to 14 h of light. The sows were given food ad libitum between the 7th and the 19th day post partům. Lactation performance was measured for all sows whereas the feeding behaviour was recorded only on 28 sows. The ad libitum food intake was comparable at 25C and 25V (6•31 kg/day) as were milk production and body reserves mobilization. In contrast, food intake at 29V was higher than at 29C (4•53 v. 3•48 kg/day) with no difference in milk production between the two treatments. The increased daily food intake at 29V resulted from higher intakes over the coolest periods of the day and especially during the dark period. Neither meal size nor daily number of meals were significantly affected by T. Feeding behaviour was mainly diurnal but with differences between treatments: 0•90 of total food intake at 29C v. 0•78 at the other three T It appears that the effects of diurnally fluctuating T on lactation performance of sows depend on the mean level of T

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of different trough types on the water consumption and drinking behaviour of pasture-based beef heifers. Two trials were implemented with 32 beef heifers to test two different types of water troughs, namely a rectangular concrete trough (RC) and a round polyvinyl chloride water tank (PVC). In Trial 1, both troughs were simultaneously available to groups of four animals within eight paddocks. In Trial 2, the animals were distributed in pairs throughout 16 paddocks and, in a crossover design, were exposed to one type of trough at a time. In both trials, estimated water intake was per four animals. Number of drinking bouts, time spent drinking and amount of water intake from the RC and PVC trough were recorded in both trials. Data were statistically analysed by analysis of variance. In Trial 1, group and trough effect were in the model. In Trial 2, stage, pair and trough were tested. In Trial 1, where both types of troughs were available, animals had a higher number of drinking bouts (3.32 v. 0.57 ± 0.09; P < 0.01), longer drinking periods (144.21 v. 22.81 ± 7.3 s; P < 0.01) and greater intake (160.21 v. 23.76 ± 13.06 l; P < 0.01) from the PVC water tank, compared to the RC trough. In Trial 2, all groups drank more often (5.10 v. 3.28 ± 0.32; P < 0.001), for longer periods (167.23 v. 115.23 ± 15.61 s; P < 0.02) and with higher intake (141.36 v. 118.47 ± 5.01 l; P < 0.02) from the PVC than from the RC trough. Thus, heifers not only prefer, but also drink more from a PVC water tank in comparison to a RC trough.

The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the impact of selection for greater muscling on the adrenaline responsiveness of muscle, adipose and liver tissue, as reflected by changes in plasma levels of the intermediary metabolites lactate, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and glucose. This study used 18-month-old steers from an Angus herd visually assessed and selected for divergence in muscling for over 15 years. Ten low muscled (Low), 11 high muscled (High) and 3 high muscled heterozygotes for myostatin mutation (HighHet) steers were challenged with adrenaline doses ranging between 0.2 to 3.0 μg/kg live weight. For each challenge, 16 blood samples were taken between −30 and 130 min relative to adrenaline administration. Plasma was analysed for NEFA, lactate and glucose concentration and area under curve (AUC) over time was calculated to reflect the tissue responses to adrenaline. Sixteen basal plasma samples from each animal were also assayed for growth hormone. Muscle glycogen and lactate concentration were analysed from four muscle biopsies taken from the semimembranosus, semitendinosus and longissimus thoracis et lumborum of each animal at 14, 90 and 150 days on an ad libitum grain-based diet and at slaughter on day 157. In response to the adrenaline challenges, the High steers had 30% lower lactate AUC than the Low steers at challenges greater than 2 μg/kg live weight, indicating lower muscle responsiveness at the highest adrenaline doses. Aligning with this decrease in muscle response in the High animals were the muscle glycogen concentrations which were 6.1% higher in the High steers. These results suggest that selection for muscling could reduce the incidence of dark, firm, dry meat that is caused by low levels of glycogen at slaughter. At all levels of adrenaline challenge, the High steers had at least 30% greater NEFA AUC, indicating that their adipose tissue was more responsive to adrenaline, resulting in greater lipolysis. In agreement with this response, the High steers had a higher plasma growth hormone concentration, which is likely to have contributed to the increased lipolysis evident in these animals in response to adrenaline. This difference in lipolysis may in part explain the reduced fatness of muscular cattle. There was no effect of selection for muscling on liver responsiveness to adrenaline.

Two studies were conducted at commercial farms on a total of 1117 sows to investigate the role of social environment on the weaning to mating interval of the sow. In one of the two studies, group housing and intense boar stimulation, achieved by daily introduction to a boar, were associated with significant reductions in the weaning to mating interval of the sow (P<0·05 and P<0·01, respectively): these two factors together produced increases of 0·18 and 0·22 in the proportion of sows mated within 10 and 28 days of weaning, respectively. In addition, parity and temperature during the week of weaning were significantly associated with the weaning to mating interval in both studies (P< 0·005 and P<005, respectively). It is concluded that the post-weaning social environment will influence the onset of oestrus in the sow.

Starch digestion in the small intestines of the dairy cow is low, to a large extent, due to a shortage of syntheses of α-amylase. One strategy to improve the situation is to enhance the synthesis of α-amylase. The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signalling pathway, which acts as a central regulator of protein synthesis, can be activated by leucine. Our objectives were to investigate the effects of leucine on the mTOR signalling pathway and to define the associations between these signalling activities and the synthesis of pancreatic enzymes using an in vitro model of cultured Holstein dairy calf pancreatic tissue. The pancreatic tissue was incubated in culture medium containing l-leucine for 3 h, and samples were collected hourly, with the control being included but not containing l-leucine. The leucine supplementation increased α-amylase and trypsin activities and the messenger RNA expression of their coding genes (P <0.05), and it enhanced the mTOR synthesis and the phosphorylation of mTOR, ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 and eukaryotic initiation factor 4E-binding protein 1 (P <0.05). In addition, rapamycin inhibited the mTOR signal pathway factors during leucine treatment. In sum, the leucine regulates α-amylase and trypsin synthesis in dairy calves through the regulation of the mTOR signal pathways.
