Changes in plasma cholecystokinin (CCK) levels after feeding were investigated in dairy cows. Three HolsteinFriesian lactating cows given concentrates at 06.00 and 13.00 h and hay at 16.30 h were used. Blood samples were taken from the jugular vein from 0 (before feeding, 13.00 h) to 6 h at 1-h intervals. The immunoreactivity of CCK was expressed in terms of the CCK-8 equivalent. The plasma concentration of CCK was not changed over the experimental period. This result might be reflected by the continuous flow of digesta from the rumen.

The reproductive performance of a lowland flock of Clun Forest ewes is reported. During the period from 1955 to 1966, over 1300 ewes entered the flock and more than 4800 lambing records were obtained. The effects of culling and death on the records available were investigated and it was found that the reduction of the material caused by death was random, while that caused by culling was related to previous performance.

Barrenness decreased with age, and for ewes aged 1, 2 and more than 2 years was 44, 7 and 5%. Average litter sizes (ALS) over the same ages were 1·15, 1·55 and 1·75. Accordingly the number of lambs born per ewe mated and present at lambing also increased with age of ewe, and values for the same ages were 0·64, 1·44 and 1·68.

An analysis of over 170 ram mating groups, consisting of ewes older than 1 year, revealed no differences between rams on the ALS of their mates. The results of a similar smaller analysis of barrenness among 1-year-old ewes also showed no evidence of a ram effect.

Animal welfare has become an important subject of public and political debate, leading to the necessity of an objective evaluation system for on-farm use. As welfare is a multi-dimensional concept, it makes sense to use a multi-criteria aggregation system to obtain an overall welfare score. Such an aggregation system is provided by the Welfare Quality® Network. The present paper focusses on the assessment of the multi-criteria evaluation model included in the Welfare Quality® protocol for growing pigs in order to aggregate the animal-based indicators first to criteria, then to principles and finally to an overall welfare score. Specifically, the importance of the indicators on the overall assessment of growing pig farms is analysed in a given population which consisted of a total of 198 protocol assessments carried out on a sample of 24 farms in Germany. By means of partial least squares modelling, the influence of measures in the calculation procedure is estimated by calculation and interpretation of Variable Importance for Projection (VIP) scores. Variable Importance for Projection scores revealed some meaningful, unexpected influences as the multi-criteria evaluation model of Welfare Quality® aimed at avoiding interferences and double-counting. Some of these influences led to the assumption that some measures might have potential as iceberg indicators, whereas others showed lesser importance. Thus, feasibility can be gained by the deletion and special weighting of indicators according to their importance. Altogether, the study is an essential contribution to the further development of the Welfare Quality® protocols as well as the application of multi-criteria decision systems in the field of animal welfare science in general.

One-hundred-and-seventy British Friesian heifers were individually fed from 6 weeks before to 6 weeks after artificial insemination on a diet of 90% maize silage and 10% decorticated groundnut in the dry matter. Three levels of nutrition were compared: 48, 55 and 62 g/day of digestible organic matter/kg live weight0·73, which gave mean growth rates of 0·34, 0·50 and 0·68 kg/day respectively. Pregnancy rates to first service were not significantly different, averaging 67, 69 and 65%. Heifers were given a body condition score at the time of insemination, and pregnancy rates corrected for level of nutrition were 42,72, 70 and 63% for heifers in poor, moderate, good or very good condition. For heifers in poor/moderate condition increasing the level of nutrition increased pregnancy rates and for those in good/very good condition pregnancy rates declined, but these effects were not significant.

1. The effects of including small quantities of groundnut meal heavily contaminated with aflatoxin in the diets of calves and fattening cattle were studied.

2. Inclusion of 4% or 8% of the toxic meal in concentrate diets for early weaned calves significantly depressed live-weight gain and food intake prior to 3 months. The depression in live-weight gain was due to lowered food intake and to impaired food utilisation.

3. Inclusion of 4% to 12% toxic meal in meal mixtures consumed at 12–13 lb. daily for 20 weeks had no effect on the performance of fattening cattle.

4. Enlarged hepatic cell nuclei were found at slaughter in livers from calves which had received toxic meal and the incidence of these slight lesions varied with toxic meal intake. A very small incidence of similar lesions occurred in fat cattle fed on the highest level of toxic meal.

5. Complete exclusion of groundnut meals containing appreciable amounts of aflatoxin from the diets of calves and dairy cows, and its very limited use in diets for store and fattening cattle is recommended.

The aims of the study were to measure the mRNA expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in bovine oocytes and early embryos derived from in vitro fertilization (IVF), parthenogenetic activation (PA) and nuclear transfer (NT), and to investigate the effects of BDNF on the development of IVF and parthenogenetic embryos. Bovine oocytes matured in vitro for 22 h were in vitro fertilized or parthenogenetic activated. By reverse transcription-PCR and quantitative real-time PCR, we found that germinal vesicle (GV) oocytes, metaphase II (MII) oocytes, 4-cell and 8-cell embryos, morulae, and blastocysts were all shown to express mRNA for BDNF. The mRNA levels for BDNF gene were different in bovine oocytes and IVF embryos at different stages (P < 0.01), with the highest expression in MII oocytes and the lowest expression in 8-cell embryos. The mRNA for BDNF was highly expressed in the PA and IVF blastocysts compared to the NT blastocysts (P < 0.01). Supplementation of culture media with BDNF at the concentration of 40 μg/l caused a significant increase in the rates of in vitro-fertilized blastocyst formation (P < 0.05) and parthenogenetic blastocyst formation (P < 0.05). However, the rate of oocyte cleavage in BDNF groups was not significantly different from that in the BDNF-free control (P > 0.05) after IVF or PA. We have also investigated the effects of BDNF on the growth of granulosa cells, which were used for co-culture of bovine early embryos. The results revealed that supplementation of culture media with 20 μg/l BDNF promoted the growth of granulosa cells (P < 0.01). Taken together, these results provided evidence for the role of neurotrophins in promoting early embryonic development as well as in the growth of granulosa cells by the co-culture system, indicating that BDNF can directly or indirectly promote bovine early embryo development.

Quantitative trait loci (QTL) were identified for traits related to carcass and meat quality in Scottish Blackface sheep. The population studied was a double backcross between lines of sheep divergently selected for carcass lean content (LEAN and FAT lines), comprising nine half-sib families. Carcass composition (600 lambs) was assessed non-destructively using computerized tomography (CT) scanning and meat quality measurements (initial and final pH of m. semimembranosus, colour, shear force value, carcass weight, lamb flavour, juiciness, tenderness and overall liking) were taken on 300 male lambs. Lambs and their sires were genotyped across candidate regions on chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 5, 14, 18, 20 and 21. QTL analyses were performed using regression interval mapping techniques. In total, nine genome-wise significant and 11 chromosome-wise and suggestive QTL were detected in seven out of eight chromosomes. Genome-wise significant QTL were mapped for lamb flavour (OAR 1); for muscle densities (OAR 2 and OAR 3); for colour a* (redness) (OAR 3); for bone density (OAR 1); for slaughter live weight (OAR 1 and OAR 2) and for the weights of cold and hot carcass (OAR 5). The QTL with the strongest statistical evidence affected the lamb flavour of meat and was on OAR 1, in a region homologous with a porcine SSC 13 QTL identified for pork flavour. This QTL segregated in four of the nine families. This study provides new information on QTL affecting meat quality and carcass composition traits in sheep, which may lead to novel opportunities for genetically improving these traits.

Some possible sources of error when sampling oesophageally fistulated sheep at pasture were examined in eleven trials. Samples collected from sheep asted for varying periods of up to 22 hours did not differ significantly in nitrogen content from samples collected from unfasted sheep. There was no significant difference between the nitrogen content of extrusa collected at the start of a 30-minute period and that of extrusa collected at the end of the period. Sheep transferred from a perennial ryegrass/clover pasture to a native pasture for three months ingested herbage containing 3·80% nitrogen when returned to the original pasture. Control sheep which had remained on the ryegrass/clover pasture selected material containing 3·33% nitrogen. In a further trial sheep transferred from a ryegrass/clover pasture to a Phalaris/ clover pasture consumed herbage with an organic matter digestibility of 70·8 % which contained 3·44 % nitrogen. The material consumed by similar sheep which had grazed the Phalaris/clover pasture for 18 months was 71·5% digestible and contained 3·63% nitrogen.

Diurnal changes in the digestibility and nitrogen content of the diet of free-grazing sheep were observed in two trials. Diurnal changes in nitrogen content were similar on different days but changes in digestibility were relatively smaller and less repeatable between days.

Consistent differences in the composition of the diet selected by individual sheep and selected on different days were observed in a further five trials. Variation between sheep and between days in the nitrogen content of the diet was ±5·6% and ±7·4% respectively, both estimates being expressed as coefficients of variation. Corresponding estimates for digestibility, calculated as standard deviations, were ±1·6 and ±1·3 units. The implications of these results when sampling oesophageally fistulated sheep at pasture are considered.

In an experiment lasting from 1.5 years before first calving until third parturition, 24 purebred indigenous Bos indicus (Boran) cows and 24 Boran crosses with Holstein (proportionately 0.50 and 0.75 Holstein blood level) were given a diet composed of Bermuda grass hay and wheat bran (0.65: 0.35) offered at low, medium and high level. This level was adapted in amount to actual body weight every 2nd week corresponding to assumed 1.0, 1.2 and 1.4 times maintenance energy requirements. Cows were subjected to working exercise before and after first parturition. Body weight differences (lower with low and medium feeding level) developed mostly before calving for the first time and showed the typical decline at the start of lactation and increase in the dry period. Additionally, Boran cows given the high level increased their body weight from the first to the second lactation cycle. Body condition scores were higher in the Boran cows and, in both genotypes, with high feeding level. Independent of feeding level and genotype, calving intervals in cycles 1 and 2 were 530 and 421 days, respectively. Lactation length was considerably shorter in the Boran cows than in the crossbred cows. Milk yield, calculated over the first 13 weeks of lactation and over the whole lactation in both cycles, was 2.06 and 3.06 times higher in the crossbreds than in the Boran. Milk of Boran cows had 1.30, 1.15 and 1.20 times higher contents of fat, total solids and protein. In the first 13 weeks of lactation, milk yield of crossbreds with high feeding level (8.7 kg/day) was higher (P < 0.05) than that of the crossbreds with medium (6.5 kg/day) and low feeding level (5.4 kg/day), respectively. Boran cows never showed a significant response in milk yield to feeding level. Accordingly, the amount of organic matter intake required per kg milk increased with feeding level in the Boran cows while it remained unaffected in the crossbreds. Organic matter digestibility, as measured in lactation cycle 1, was higher (P < 0.01) in Boran. Response to high feeding level and estimated maintenance requirements of crossbred cows corresponded with current assumptions, but crossbreds subjected to medium feeding level expressed unexpectedly little difference from those receiving the low level. It seems that current recommendations are not generally applicable to indigenous tropical breeds as these responded differently from crossbreds to feeding level.

A computer-based model of the response of the ewe to energy nutrition during pregnancy is described, based on a previous analysis of energy requirements. A ewe of specified weight and body condition 30 days from conception, carrying a known number of lambs, is predicted to grow them to an optimal weight if the nutritional regime allows. Daily energy requirements of the ewe-foetus system are calculated as the sum of requirements for maintenance and for growth and are compared with the daily energy supplied.If the feed provides energy surplus to requirements, the ewe herself gains weight; otherwise, the ewe mobilizes her own reserves, within limits, to protect the foetus. If this does not produce the energy required for optimal growth, foetal growth is reduced.

Published experimental results are compared with predictions of the model when run under similar conditions; in general, predictions of total maternal weight at the end of pregnancy are within 5 % of those observed in the experiments. Model predictions of the effects of some particular nutritional regimes during pregnancy are presented and the sensitivity of the predictions of the model to certain of the assumptions made in its construction are discussed.

An estimate of the frequency of twin calvings was obtained from the analysis of over 38 000 calvings of Friesian cows in M.M.B. milk-recorded herds. The incidence of twinning increased from 0·54 % in the first parity to 3·37% in the fifth parity. A significant excess of cows above expected produced either more than one set of twins or no twins at all. Repeatability ranged from 0·0 for cows with three calvings to 0·063 for cows with five calvings.

Data on lactation yield and duration, butterfat percentage and calving interval showed no significant effect of twinning. However, consistent trends were noted showing that dams which calve twins have longer subsequent lactations, higher whole lactation yields and lower fat percentages than contemporary dams with single calves. The possible causes for these trends are discussed and are considered to be the lower breeding efficiency and longer calving intervals of dams of twins.

The maintenance energy requirements of 29 Hereford × Friesian and 27 Blue Grey (White Shorthorn × Galloway) cows each offered one of six levels of feeding supplying between 0·5 and 1·2 likely maintenance requirements for 56 days were estimated, from regressions of daily live-weight change on energy intake, as the energy intake corresponding to zero live-weight change.

There were no effects of level of intake on diet digestibility or of genotype on maintenance requirements.

Maintenance requirements (M, MJ metabolizable energy per day) were shown to be determined by both live weight (LW, kg) and body condition score (C) according to the relationship: M = 0·147LW – 0·016C.LW.

The estimates derived are compared with other published values and the hypothesis is advanced that maintenance requirements are likely to be more closely related to body protein mass than to body weight.

The dietary energy equivalent of 1 kg loss of live weight is calculated to be 26·7 MJ and it is estimated that in non-lactating cows body tissue is used for maintenance with an efficiency of 0·77.

The voluntary intake of two hays and one dried grass by 48 mature non-pregnant Blackface ewes was measured for 33 weeks. The apparent dry-matter digestibility coefficients of the diets in vitro were 59, 61 and 77% respectively for the hays and the dried grass. At the end of the first phase of the experiment each group of 16 ewes was split into two subgroups of five animals, each of which was subsequently given one of the other diets, and one subgroup of six animals which remained on the same diet. Food intake was measured for a further 8 weeks. Body fat was estimated at intervals from tritiated water space.

The amount of variation in voluntary food intake that could be attributed to variation in live weight and fatness of the animals and in apparent dry-matter digestibility and cell wall constituents of the diet was calculated for various periods.

The range of live weight and fatness increased during the experiment. Initially, and after the change in diets, variation in apparent dry-matter digestibility had an important positive effect on intake, but at the end of the 33-week phase its influence was negligible or, when fat weight was not considered, negative. The negative effect of fat weight on intake increased during the experiment.

Within individual diets during short periods of time (1 to 5 weeks) the highest proportions of the variation in intake that could be attributed to variation in live weight and fatness of the ewes were 50, 94 and 65% respectively for the hays and the dried grass. Taking all three diets together all the variables considered could explain 75% of the variation for a few weeks at a time, but for longer periods seasonal influences, and other factors not included among the independent variables, probably operated.

The mean fibre diameter (MFD) of wool is the primary determinant of price, processing performance and textile quality. This study determines the primary influences on MFD as Saxon Merino sheep age, by allometrically relating MFD to fleece-free liveweight (FFLwt). In total, 79 sheep were grazed in combinations of three stocking rates and two grazing systems (GS: sheep only; mixed with Angora goats) and studied over 3 years. Measurements were made over 14 consecutive periods (Segments), including segments of FFLwt gain or FFLwt loss. Using shearing and liveweight records and dye-bands on wool, the FFLwt and average daily gain (ADG) of each sheep were determined for each segment. The mean and range in key measurements were as follows: FFLwt, 40.1 (23.1 to 64.1) kg; MFD, 18.8 (12.7 to 25.8) μm. A random coefficient restricted maximum likelihood (REML) regression mixed model was developed to relate the logarithm of MFD to the logarithm of FFLwt and other effects. Thus, MFD was allometrically related to the cube root of FFLwt over seasons and years for sheep, but to the square root of FFLwt for sheep grazed with goats. The result for sheep grazed alone accords with a primary response being that the allocation of nutrients towards the cross-sectional growth of wool follicles is proportional to the changes in the skin surface area arising from changes in the size of the sheep. The proportionality constant varied systematically with ADG, and in sheep only grazing, was about 5 when sheep lost 100 g/day and about 6 when sheep gained 100 g/day. The proportionality constant did not systematically change with chronological age. The variation in the allometric coefficient between individual sheep indicates that some sheep were more sensitive to changes in FFLwt than other sheep. Key practical implications include the following: (a) the reporting of systematic increases in MFD with age is likely to be a consequence of allowing sheep to increase in size during shearing intervals as they age; (b) comparisons of MFD between sheep are more likely to have a biological basis when standardised to a common FFLwt and not just to a common age; (c) wool quality (MFD, staple strength) are most likely to be optimised in management systems that maintain constant FFLwt of adult sheep within and between years.

The extra energy used for walking on the level and on negative gradients above that used when standing still (Ew) (J/m per kg live weight) was measured in two entire male donkeys (Equus asinus). Ew was not affected by speed within the measured range (V = 0·6 to 1·3 m/s) but gradient (0, −10%, −15%) had a significant effect Ew−10% = 0·97 (s.e. 0·02), Ew−10% = 0·55 (s.e. = 0·03) and Ew−15% = 0·67 (s.e. 0·03).

The extra energy cost of carrying loads (Ec), defined as J/m per kg carried was measured using the same animals. Loads were placed over the animals shoulders and speed was varied within the range 0·6 to 1·3 m/s (Eclevel = 1·1 (s.e. 0·04), Ec−10% = 2·7 (s.e. 0·17) and Ec−15% = 3·3 (s.e. 0·20) were significantly different.

The energy cost of pulling loads (Ep) (f/m per kg) was measured while the animals pulled loads up to proportionately 0·17 of their live weight. The animals wore a breast-plate harness and walking speed was varied within the range 0·6 to 1·3 m/s. Mean values were 26·5 (s.e. 0·72) on the level, 15-3 (s.e. 1·2) on the −10% gradient and 6·2 (s.e. 0·43) on the −15% gradient.

The two donkeys used in this experiment were more efficient in both carrying and pulling loads than oxen and buffaloes. Negative gradients have a significant effect on energy consumption and when estimating the energy expenditure of working animals this factor should be taken into account.

1. Four groups of three litter-sister Large White gilts were given during four successive pregnancies a daily meal allowance of either 2·70 kg (High), 1·35 (Low) or 1·35 kg for 76 days followed by 2·70 kg until parturition (Low-High). During 8-week lactation periods all received the same daily allowance of 1·8 kg meal plus 0·35 kg for each piglet suckled.

2. On the 100th day of the fourth pregnancy all sows were slaughtered. The major internal organs were weighed and measurements recorded of the length of carcass and backfat thickness at shoulder, midback and loin. The carcasses were then separated into bone, skin, subcutaneous fat and muscles plus intermuscular fat. The weights of radius-ulna, tibia-fibula, humerus and femur were recorded.

3. In each of the treatment groups the live-weight changes of the sows in the fourth pregnancy were almost identical to those in the third pregnancy.

4. The mean total carcass weights for the High, Low and Low-High sows were 154, 92 and 110 kg respectively, and the mean subcutaneous fat contents of the carcasses 14, 4 and 6 kg respectively.

5. The relative proportions of the weights of the organs to carcass weight, weight of bone to weight of muscle plus intermuscular fat, and the weight of individual bones to total bone weight were relatively unaffected by the treatments after allowance had been made for total carcass weight.

6. The implications of the changes in body composition on the lifetime reproductive performance of sows are discussed.

Play behaviour has been proposed as a measure of good welfare in growing animals and locomotor play by calves is often reduced after weaning off milk. Adjusting weaning age according to individual calves’ abilities to eat solid feed maintains energy intake and weight gain during weaning. We investigated the effects of this method of weaning on locomotor play of calves and the relationship between locomotor play and energy intake and weight gains. We measured the running behaviour of 56 Holstein heifer calves before and after weaning. Calves were housed in groups of eight, fed milk, grain starter and hay from automated feeders. Weaning began when their voluntary intake of grain starter reached either 200 or 400 g/day, and weaning was completed when starter intake reached either 800 or 1600 g/day. Before weaning, older calves ran less than young ones; and the duration of running correlated with weight gains and digestible energy intake. Immediately after weaning, digestible energy intake and locomotor play decreased but no correlation was observed between these variables. One week after weaning, the duration of running was correlated with both energy intake and weight gain. Digestible energy intake increased but locomotor play continued to decrease. The amount of running a calf does after weaning partly reflects energy intake and weight gain, supporting suggestions that locomotor play is good indicator of welfare and fitness of growing animals. However, the decline in locomotor play following weaning is not solely due to decreased energy intake.

The objective of this study was to develop an automated monitoring system to detect lameness in group-housed sows early and reliably on the basis of acceleration data sampled from ear tags. To this end, acceleration data from ear tags were acquired from an experimental system deployed at the Futterkamp Agriculture Research Farm from May 2012 until November 2013. The developed method performs a wavelet transform for each individual sow’s time series of total acceleration. Feature series are then computed by locally estimating the energy, variation and variance in a small moving window. These feature series are then further decomposed into uniform level sets. From these series of level sets, the highest and lowest levels are monitored for lameness detection. To that end, they are split into a past record to serve as reference data representing a sow’s expected behaviour. The deviations between the reference and the remaining detection part of current data, termed feature activated, were then utilised to possibly indicate a lameness condition. The method was applied to a sample of 14 sows, seven of which were diagnosed as lame by a veterinarian on the last day of the sampling period of 14 days each. A prediction part of 3 days was set. Feature activated were clearly separable for the lame and healthy group with means of 8.8 and 0.8, respectively. The day-wise means were 1.93, 9.47 and 15.16 for the lame group and 0.02, 1.13 and 1.44 for the healthy group. A threshold could be set to completely avoid false positives while successfully classifying six lame sows on at least one of the 2 last days. The accuracy values for this threshold were 0.57, 0.71 and 0.78 when restricting to data from the particular day. A threshold that maximised the accuracy achieved values of 0.57, 0.79 and 0.93. Thus, the method presented seems powerful enough to suggest that an individual classification from ear tag-sampled acceleration data into lame and healthy is feasible without previous knowledge of the health status, but has to be validated by using a larger data set.

Lowering protein level in diets for piglets urge to have knowledge on the piglet’s requirements for essential amino acids (AA) and their interactions. The present studies aimed to determine the interaction between the dietary level of valine (Val) and tryptophan (Trp) and the effect of AA imbalance at two levels of dietary Val on the growth performance of post-weaning piglets. In Experiment 1 (duration 4 weeks), the effects of supplementation of free l-Val (1.0 g/kg) and/or l-Trp (0.5 g/kg) in a low-CP diet (CP 17.7%), marginal in Trp and Val, was studied in a 2×2 factorial design and using an additional reference treatment (CP 19.5%). In Experiment 2 (duration 5 weeks), the influence of a stepwise increase in excess supply of isoleucine (Ile), histidine (His) and leucine (Leu), up to 10, 10% and 30% relative to their requirement values respectively, was evaluated at 60% or 70% standardized ileal digestible (SID) Val relative to SID lysine, using a 3×2 factorial design. In Experiment 1, over the whole experimental period, feed intake (FI) was affected by dietary Trp level (P<0.05) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) by both the level of Trp and Val in the diet (both P<0.05). Increasing Trp level increased FI and decreased FCR while increasing dietary Val level reduced FI and increased FCR. For BW gain (BWG), there was an interaction between dietary level of Trp and Val (P<0.05). Valine supplementation decreased BWG using a diet marginal in Trp, whereas it increased BWG when using a Trp sufficient diet. Piglets fed the low-CP diet with adequate levels of Val and Trp showed at least same performance compared to piglets fed the high CP reference diet. In Experiment 2, increasing dietary Val improved FI and BWG (P<0.001) and tended to improve FCR. Dietary AA excess for Ile, His and Leu reduced FI and BWG (P<0.05) and only affected FCR (P<0.01) in the 1st week of the study. Dietary level of Val and AA excess did not show interactive effects, except for FCR over the final 2 weeks of the study (P<0.05). In conclusion, an interaction exists between dietary supply of Val and Trp on the zootechnical performance of post-weaning piglets and dietary AA excess for Ile, Leu and His, reduces growth performance of piglets in low-protein diets, independent of the dietary level of Val.

Sixty twin- and 60 single-bearing ewes were used in a 2 ✕ 2 ✕ 2 factorial design incorporating nutritional and shearing-cold exposure treatment (no. = 15 per subgroup) to study the effects on periparturient immunity against nematode infection. From week –8 to week –4 relative to parturition, animals grazed ryegrass-white clover pastures at allowances designed to provide either 0·8 (low allowance) or 1·2 (high allowance) of estimated metabolizable energy requirement for a ewe carrying 1·5 lambs. During week –4, half the sheep from each reproductive effort and nutritional group were shorn and exposed to artificial wind and rain for 4 h on each of 4 days consecutively. During the same week, all animals were challenged twice with 1·5 ✕ 104 Teladorsagia circumcincta and 1·5 ✕ 104 Trichostrongylus colubriformis infective third stage larvae to supplement the natural infection from pasture. From week –3 to week + 5 relative to parturition the sheep were run together and offered pasture at rates estimated to enable them to meet their nutrient requirement.

Shearing and cold stress reduced ewe body weight (by up to 4·66 kg per sheep), and temporarily reduced the levels of IgA against T. circumcincta (by proportionately 0·24) and T. colubriformis (0·34), and raised faecal egg count (1·6 to 4·4 fold) but did not affect the parasite-specific total antibody levels in the serum. The low allowance during pregnancy was associated with a 6·09-kg decrease in ewe body weight, decrease in the levels of total antibody and of IgA against both T. circumcincta and T. colubriformis, and increased faecal egg count (by 1·5 to 10·6 fold) during pregnancy and lactation. Faecal egg count was consistently higher (up to 8·8 fold) in twin-bearing and rearing ewes than in single-bearing and rearing ewes except during the first 4 weeks of the experiment. A significant effect of litter size on antibody levels was relatively small when compared with short-term changes (reductions) in antibody levels immediately around parturition. There were significant negative correlations between faecal egg count during late pregnancy and ewe body weight in lactation and significant negative correlations between the levels of total antibody against T. colubriformis and faecal egg counts near the end of the experiment. We conclude that litter size is likely to have greater influence on the resistance of ewes to nematode infections in the periparturient period than either pasture allowance or cold stress within the range of parameters used in this work.
