Dietary phosphorus concentration greatly affects pig’s growth performance, environmental impact and diet cost. A total of 1080 pigs (initially 5.9 ± 1.08 kg) from three commercial research rooms were used to determine the effects of increasing standardized total tract digestible (STTD) P concentrations in diets without and with phytase on growth performance and percentage bone ash. Pens (10 pigs/pen, 9 pens/treatment) were balanced for equal weights and randomly allotted to 12 treatments. Treatments were arranged in two dose titrations (without or with 2000 units of phytase) with six levels of STTD P each. The STTD P levels were expressed as a percentage of NRC (2012) requirement estimates (% of NRC; 0.45 and 0.40% for phases 1 and 2, respectively) and were: 80%, 90%, 100%, 110%, 125% and 140% of NRC in diets without phytase and 100%, 110%, 125%, 140%, 155% and 170% of NRC in diets with phytase. Diets were provided in three phases, with experimental diets fed during phases 1 (days 0 to 11) and 2 (days 11 to 25), followed by a common diet from days 25 to 46. On day 25, radius samples from one median-weight gilt per pen were collected for analysis of bone ash. During the treatment period, increasing STTD P from 80% to 140% of NRC in diets without phytase improved average daily gain (ADG; quadratic, P < 0.01), average daily feed intake (ADFI; quadratic, P < 0.05) and gain–feed ratio (G : F; linear, P < 0.01). Estimated STTD P requirement in diets without phytase was 117% and 91% of NRC for maximum ADG according to quadratic polynomial (QP) and broken-line linear (BLL) models, respectively, and was 102%, 119% and >140% of NRC for maximum G : F using BLL, broken-line quadratic and linear models, respectively. When diets contained phytase, increasing STTD P from 100% to 170% of NRC improved ADG (quadratic, P < 0.05) and G : F (linear, P < 0.01). Estimated STTD P requirement in diets containing phytase was 138% for maximum ADG (QP), and 147% (QP) and 116% (BLL) of NRC for maximum G : F. Increasing STTD P increased (linear, P < 0.01) the percentage bone ash regardless of phytase addition. When comparing diets containing the same STTD P levels, phytase increased (P < 0.01) ADG, ADFI and G : F. In summary, estimated STTD P requirements varied depending on the response criteria and statistical models and ranged from 91% to >140% of NRC (0.41% to >0.63% of phase 1 diet and 0.36% to >0.56% of phase 2 diet) in diets without phytase, and from 116% to >170% of NRC (0.52% to >0.77% of phase 1 diet and 0.46% to >0.68% of phase 2 diet) for diets containing phytase. Phytase exerted an extra-phosphoric effect on promoting pig’s growth and improved the P dose-responses for ADG and G : F.

Quantity and variety of environmental antigens, age, diet, vaccine protocols, exercising practice and mucosal cytokine microenvironment are factors that influence serum immunoglobulin (Ig) levels. IgA, IgG, IgG(T) and IgM were quantified in 60 horses, which were classified into two groups, ‘intensive’ or ‘relaxed’, according to sanitary standards of the facilities and physical exercise to which animals were subjected to. The ‘intensive’ group presented lower means for all isotypes, but only IgA presented a significant (P < 0.0064) difference when compared to the ‘relaxed’ group. This suggests that mucosal immunity found in the ’intensive’ group is lower when compared to the ‘relaxed’ group. Our data suggest that athlete horses may be less poised to mount an effective mucosal immunity response to environmental challenges and should not be considered by the same perspectives as a free-ranging horse.

A solution of ammonium salts of a mixture of short-chain fatty acids (mainly acetic acid) was added to the sole source of drinking water of 10 lactating Jersey cows. There was considerable variation in the concentration of salts tolerated without depression in water intake. Some animals refused solution offered at a concentration of 0·5% (w/w) whereas one animal accepted solution at a concentration of 8% (w/w) and had a mean daily intake of salts equivalent to 836 g acetic acid.

2. Adjustment of the pH of the drinking solution to 6·5–7·5 increased the tolerance to the salts solution of animals which showed a low tolerance to the unadjusted solution. A mean daily intake equivalent to 480 g acetic acid was achieved without a significant depression of water intake. Replacement of 50 % of the ammonium ions by calcium increased the intake of salts by some cows but two out of eight refused the solution at a concentration of 0·5% (w/w).

3. The addition of saccharine, vanilla or aniseed to a solution of the ammonium salts gave little or no improvement in acetate intake but sodium cyclamate, ethyl acetate or molasses reduced the variability between animals in their tolerance to the solution and increased the mean intake of salts. With an addition of molasses, which gave the most marked response, there was a mean daily intake of salts equivalent to 495±26 g acetic acid.

A growth trial lasting 84 days and digestibility trials were carried out with Hereford × Friesian steers weighing initially 360 kg. Daily dry-matter intakes (kg) of 32 steers offered turnips with blood meal (250 g/day) and straw treated with sodium hydroxide (SP), urea (UP), ammonia (AP) or untreated (CP), and of a further eight steers offered turnips and ammonia-treated straw without a supplement of blood meal (A) were 6·5 (SP), 6·0 (UP), 6·6 (AP), 5·9 (CP) and 6·3 (A); live-weight gains (kg/day) were 0·69, 0·58, 0·60, 0·37 and 0·39 respectively. The non-protein nitrogen intake of steers on treatments SP and CP were matched to those on treatments AP, A and UP by the addition of urea. Coefficients of apparent straw organic matter digestibility were 0·629 (SP), 0·531 (UP), 0·578 (AP), 0·446 (CP) and 0·569 (A). Overall food intakes on all treatments were low initially (88 g/kg W0·73) and declined further to 78 g/kg W0·73. Live-weight gains also were low; those of steers given diets CP and A were lower (P< 0·001) than gains of steers on other treatments.

Improvements in the apparent digestibility of straw were obtained by chemical treatment but all values, except that of the UP group, were low. The supplementation of ammonia-treated straw with blood meal (AP) produced a higher (P < 0·001) growth rate in steers compared with that of steers receiving ammonia-treated straw alone (A). The low mean pH (6·48) and ammonia concentration (9 mg/100 ml) of rumen liquor sampled during the growth trial suggest that the poor growth rates and low food intake of cattle in this trial may be associated with the rapid release of soluble sugars from turnips given only once daily.

Sixteen cross-bred male lambs were assigned to either a group- or a single-rearing treatment up to 150 days of age. After this time the single-housed rams were penned together and all rams were tested weekly for their abilities to successfully mate with ewes for a further 10 weeks. There were no marked differences in the development of sexual behaviour between the two treatments.

This experiment studied the effect of a modest difference in diet structure value (SV) on milk conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) contents of cows fed diets supplemented with extruded linseed, in situations where the diets provided enough SV and therefore did not induce milk fat depression. Six lactating Holstein cows were used in a crossover design with two treatments (‘SV 1.50’ and ‘SV 1.73’) and two periods of 21 days. The ‘SV 1.50’ diet contained 59% maize silage, 13% soya bean meal, 13% sugar beet pulp and 14% Nutex Compact (containing 56% extruded linseed) (dry matter (DM) basis) and was offered as a restricted total mixed ration. For the ‘SV 1.73’ diet, 8% wheat straw (DM basis) was added to the ‘SV 1.50’ diet as an additional structure source. The two diets had a forage-to-concentrate ratio of 59 : 41 and 62 : 38. The inclusion of straw in the diet resulted in an additional intake of NDF (+1110 g/day), which accounted for 90% of the additional intake of OM, whereas additional intakes of the other nutrients were minor. Milk yield and composition did not differ among treatments. The inclusion of straw in the diet did not affect the milk levels of t10–18:1, 18:2n-6, c9-16:1, c9-18:1, c11-18:1, 6:0, 8:0, 20:4 and 20:5. It decreased the milk levels of c9,t11-CLA (2.13% v. 3.03% of fatty acids (FA) reported, P < 0.001), t11-18:1 (4.99% v. 7.10% of FA reported, P < 0.001), 18:3n-3, t9-16:1 and t9-18:1, while it increased the milk levels of 6:0–14:0 (20.90% v. 19.69% of FA reported, P < 0.01), 16:0 (26.55% v. 25.25% of FA reported, P < 0.01), 18:0 (13.54% v. 12.59% of FA reported, P < 0.001), 17:0, 20:0 and 22:5. Regarding the ratio between FA, the inclusion of straw increased the 18:0/total C18 FA ratio (37.74% v. 32.07%, P < 0.001), whereas it decreased the total trans-C18 FA/total C18 FA ratio (15.46% v. 20.34%, P < 0.001), the t11-18:1/total C18 FA ratio (13.70% v. 17.95%, P < 0.01) and the c9,t11-CLA/total C18 FA ratio (5.82% v. 7.64%, P < 0.001). We conclude from this experiment that even a modest increase in SV to a diet supplemented with extruded linseed, yet already providing enough SV, alters the rumen lipid metabolism and, hence, CLA levels in milk fat.

Routinely performed painful procedures are of increasing interest and, in 2001 (Royal Order, May 17), Belgium prohibited docking in several vertebrates including horses. In 2004, opponents to this decision submitted a Bill (Doc51 0969/001) to Parliament, intending to obtain derogation for Belgian draught horses, which were traditionally docked. The Animal Welfare Council of Belgium, an official body advising the Minister of Public Health, was asked to evaluate this complex question, including biological, ethical and socio-economic aspects, on the basis of the available peer-reviewed studies. In this context, this study reviews legal aspects (overview of the European legislation), zootechnic aspects (uses of the Belgian draught horse) and biological aspects (pain potentially related to docking; horses’ welfare linked to insect harassment and hygiene, communication and reproduction) of tail docking in draught horses. We conclude that (1) there is no benefit for horses in tail docking, including Belgian draught horses, (2) potential advantages of docking are essentially in favour of humans and these advantages could be scrupulously re-evaluated, taking into account practices of other countries. Therefore, there is no need to dock any horse other than for veterinary reasons.

Laparoscopic insemination with frozen-thawed semen is currently used for planned matings in the Sarda breeding programme. In order to find a fast and less intrusive artificial insemination (AI) method that could replace laparoscopic insemination, a field comparison of laparoscopic and transcervical techniques was carried out on 200 mature Sarda ewes. After AI, ewes were assigned to teaser and fertile rams for 2 months. Return rates and cumulative (AI + natural mating) lambing rates were recorded over three subsequent 23-day periods. Lambing rates to AI were significantly different (P < 0·01), and were 62% and 7% respectively for laparoscopic and transcervical AI. Cumulative lambing rates after two further 23-day periods of natural mating were no longer significantly different (P > 0·05) and reached 82% and 74% respectively. Ewes with body condition scores at AI higher than 2·75 showed better overall reproductive performance, but not higher pregnancy rate to AI. Plasma cortisol concentrations, sampled twice, before and after AI, were higher (P < 0·01) in the last sample, suggesting a stress response to insemination. Cortisol levels after AI were lower (P < 0·01) for ewes submitted to transcervical rather than laparoscopic insemination (P < 0·01). However, cortisol levels after AI were no greater than those recorded when ewes were restrained in a milking yoke different from that usually employed. Laparoscopic AI was confirmed as the most suitable technique for insemination offrozen semen in the Sarda breeding scheme.

Recent studies with Nile tilapia have shown divergent results regarding the possibility of selecting on morphometric measurements to promote indirect genetic gains in fillet yield (FY). The use of indirect selection for fillet traits is important as these traits are only measurable after harvesting. Random regression models are a powerful tool in association studies to identify the best time point to measure and select animals. Random regression models can also be applied in a multiple trait approach to analyze indirect response to selection, which would avoid the need to sacrifice candidate fish. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the genetic relationships between several body measurements, weight and fillet traits throughout the growth period and to evaluate the possibility of indirect selection for fillet traits in Nile tilapia. Data were collected from 2042 fish and was divided into two subsets. The first subset was used to estimate genetic parameters, including the permanent environmental effect for BW and body measurements (8758 records for each body measurement, as each fish was individually weighed and measured a maximum of six times). The second subset (2042 records for each trait) was used to estimate genetic correlations and heritabilities, which enabled the calculation of correlated response efficiencies between body measurements and the fillet traits. Heritability estimates across ages ranged from 0.05 to 0.5 for height, 0.02 to 0.48 for corrected length (CL), 0.05 to 0.68 for width, 0.08 to 0.57 for fillet weight (FW) and 0.12 to 0.42 for FY. All genetic correlation estimates between body measurements and FW were positive and strong (0.64 to 0.98). The estimates of genetic correlation between body measurements and FY were positive (except for CL at some ages), but weak to moderate (−0.08 to 0.68). These estimates resulted in strong and favorable correlated response efficiencies for FW and positive, but moderate for FY. These results indicate the possibility of achieving indirect genetic gains for FW and by selecting for morphometric traits, but low efficiency for FY when compared with direct selection.

The effect of barley level and monensin on feedlot performance by lambs and steers was investigated in two experiments. Monensin was given at 0 and 33mg/kg of food in lamb and steer diets, which contained bailey at levels from 300 to 900g/kg. Food consumption by lambs was not affected by monensin but intakes decreased with increasing levels of barley (P < 0·05). Food intake by steers decreased in a linear manner with increasing levels of barley (P < 0·01) and averaged 80g/kg lower when monensin was fed (P < 0·05). Monensin improved lamb gains by 350g/kg (P < 0·001), but had no effect on steer performance. Feeding monensin improved average food efficiency in lambs and steers by 27 and 4%, respectively. Carcass characteristics were not influenced by monensin, but heavier carcasses (P < 0·01) in steers given the high barley rations were also fatter (P < 0·001).

The objective of this experiment was to compare the nutritional properties of potato protein concentrate, a by-product of the starch industry produced entirely in Europe, with that of soybean meal (SBM), for growing cattle. The experiment was conducted on double-muscled Belgian Blue bulls, fitted with rumen, duodenal and ileal cannulas, according to a 4 × 4 Latin square design. They were fed three different iso-N and iso-net energy diets formulated according to the Dutch feed evaluation system, differing in the nature of the main protein source, which was either SBM (‘SBM’ treatment), potato protein concentrate (PPC, ‘PPC’ treatment) or an iso-N mixture of these two protein sources (‘mixed’ treatment). A fourth treatment consisted of ‘PPC’ supplemented by 9.5% digestible proteins supplied by duodenal perfusion of sodium caseinate (CAS, ‘PPC + CAS’ treatment). No significant difference was observed in the ruminal fluid pH, whereas both ‘PPC’ and ‘PPC + CAS’ had the effect of reducing the ruminal ammonia nitrogen (N-NH3) concentration. No significant difference was observed in the apparent intestinal digestibility of the dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM) or N. Outflows of non-NH3-N, microbial proteins and dietary proteins from the rumen were similar for ‘PPC’, ‘SBM’ and ‘mixed’, and increased with CAS infusion by 20%, 17% and 27%, respectively. On the basis of in vivo observations, the degradability of SBM and PPC proteins was estimated at 0.60 and 0.43, respectively, corresponding to the values quoted in the literature. The supply of digestible essential amino acids (EAA) was significantly greater with ‘PPC + CAS’ and did not differ among ‘SBM’, ‘mixed’ and ‘PPC’. This illustrates the difficulty of altering the amino acid (AA) pattern of digestible protein by the nature of the protein of dietary origin when an animal is fed a high nutritional value diet. N retention was not affected by replacing SBM with PPC, but increased by 10% with CAS infusion. On the basis of the plasma AA pattern, the supply of digestible Met was probably limiting with ‘SBM’, ‘mixed’ and ‘PPC’. The CAS perfusion supplemented all AA, including Met, leading to increased N retention. This improvement was limited, however, and N utilisation remained unchanged between treatments. In conclusion, despite a more favourable EAA pattern, PPC offered no advantage compared with SBM for growing bulls when diets were formulated according to the Dutch feed evaluation system.

The files for ultrasound diagnosis of gestating mares belonging to the French equine herd recorded for 3 consecutive years were joined with the files for foal birth of these same mares, allowing the statistical analysis of factors of pregnancy loss. For 28 872 positive diagnoses of gestation, 2898 losses were recorded, that is, a global rate of gestation interruption of 9.12%. The etiology of these interruptions is mainly extrinsic: the year and month of insemination, as well as region for climatic reasons. The intrinsic causes that are implicated are breed of the father (heavy breeds except the hypermetric ones lose fewer pregnancies than warm-blooded breeds), age of the mother (losses are lower in mares of 7 to 10 years of age) and status (mares with foals have fewer pregnancy losses than mares not having foaled the previous year), as well as fetuses with consanguinity (when this increases, the pregnancy losses increase as well). However, the additive genetic effect is extremely low; it corresponds to heritability below 5% and few effects of the environment, common to the offspring of the same mare, were identified. This therefore gives little hope of being able to select against the ‘gestation loss’ trait.

This study aimed to analyse the relationship between rabbit semen characteristics and semen fertilising ability after insemination, which is generally found to be weak. Our hypothesis was that using high semen dilutions (1 : 19), non-oestrus-stimulated does, and homospermic inseminations would make it easier to predict semen fertilising ability. Semen characteristics were evaluated on 275 ejaculates of 128 INRA1001 bucks, distributed into five successive batches. A total of 1970 inseminations were performed. The continuous semen variables were subdivided into three classes of similar size to account for any non-linear relationship between semen characteristics and fertilising ability. Mass motility was divided into two classes according to the presence or absence of waves under microscope observation. Libido, the presence or absence of gel, volume, percentage of progressive sperms, curvilinear velocity, beat frequency of the flagellum, and straightness and linearity of sperm movement did not affect fertility, prolificacy or productivity. It was confirmed that mass motility, estimated by visual observation under the microscope, significantly influenced fertility as well as the percentage of motile and of rapid sperms, and the amplitude of lateral head displacement, estimated by a computer-assisted semen analysis system. To a lesser extent, the percentage of motile cells and of rapid cells significantly influenced prolificacy. Consequently, mass motility and the percentage of motile cells significantly influenced rabbit doe productivity (+1 live births/AI when the semen showed at least a beginning of wave movement, or when the percentage of motile cells was >84%). Interestingly, a gain of 1.5 rabbits was observed when the percentage of rapid cells changed from 64% to 79%, whereas productivity significantly dropped beyond 83% of rapid cells, reflecting a non-linear relationship.

1. A direct calorimeter is described, capable of partitioning the total heat loss from individual pigs into its evaporative and non-evaporative components; tests revealed that the instrument measured non-evaporative heat loss with a coefficient of variation of 3%, and evaporative heat loss with a coefficient of variation of 5·0% at 10° and 20°C, and 5·6% at 30°C.

2. Experiments were carried out to measure the differences between heat losses at 20° and 9°C, or at 20° and 30°C, for pigs weighing approximately 26 kg and 64 kg; each measurement lasted 20 minutes and was made after an equilibration period of 3–4 hr.

3. Heat loss was proportional to body weight raised to the power of 0·6, under the present experimental conditions, over the range 26–64 kg at 20°C.

4. Total heat loss at 9°C was significantly greater than at 20°C for pigs of both sizes; total heat loss at 30°C was smaller than at 20°C for pigs of both sizes, the decrease being significant for the heavier pigs only. Nonevaporative heat loss increased significantly with decrease in temperature. Evaporative heat loss at 30°C was significantly greater than at 20°C. The increases in total and non-evaporative heat losses at 9°C when compared with 20°C, were significantly greater for the lighter pigs than for the heavier pigs. The small decrease in total heat loss at 30°C, compared with 20°C, may have been due to non-attainment of thermal equilibrium at 30°C.

5. Values for whole body thermal conductance were calculated from the measurements of non-evaporative heat loss, and these indicated that a change in tissue conductance took place between 20° and 30°C; the mean values at 9°C were 3·78 and 3·15 kcal/°C.m2.hr for the lighter and heavier pigs respectively.

6. Evaporative heat loss at 20°C amounted to 280 and 330 kcal/m2. 24. hr for the lighter and heavier pigs respectively. This component of heat loss amounted to 8% and 13% of the total heat loss at 9° and 20°C respectively for all pigs; the corresponding values at 30°C were 32% and 25% for the lighter and heavier pigs respectively. The increased evaporative loss at 30°C was accompanied by an increase in respiratory rate.

7. These results agreed well with the results of previous work with groups of pigs, for heat loss at 20°C. Comparisons with that work indicate that the increase in heat loss at 9°C, when compared with 20°C, was greater for individual pigs than for groups of pigs, of both sizes.

Mitochondria plays an important role in the regulation of energy homeostasis. Moreover, mitochondrial biogenesis accompanies skeletal myogenesis, and we previously reported that maternal high-energy diet repressed skeletal myogenesis in pig fetuses. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of moderately increased maternal energy intake on skeletal muscle mitochondrial biogenesis and function of the pig fetuses. Primiparous purebred Large White sows were allocated to a normal energy intake group (NE) as recommended by the National Research Council (NRC) and a high energy intake group (HE, 110% of NRC recommendations). On day 90 of gestation, fetal umbilical vein blood and longissimus (LM) muscle were collected. Results showed that the weight gain of sows fed HE diet was higher than NE sows on day 90 of gestation (P<0.05). Maternal HE diet increased fetal umbilical vein serum triglyceride and insulin concentrations (P<0.05), and tended to increase the homeostasis model assessment index (P=0.08). Furthermore, HE fetuses exhibited increased malondialdehyde concentration (P<0.05), and decreased activities of antioxidative enzymes (P<0.05) and intracellular NAD+ level (P<0.05) in LM muscle. These alterations in metabolic traits of HE fetuses were accompanied by reduced mitochondrial DNA amount (P<0.05) and down-regulated messenger RNA expression levels of genes responsible for mitochondrial biogenesis and function (P<0.05). Our results suggest that moderately increased energy supply during gestation decreases mitochondrial biogenesis, function and antioxidative capacity in skeletal muscle of pig fetuses.

Between July 1971 and June 1973 a flock of between 60 and 100 Finn-Dorset ewes were mated at 6-monthly intervals in July and January each year following oestrus synchronization. The conception rates at each mating were:

July 1971—51 from 67 mated (76%) using hand-mating with a follow-up of paddock mating (1 ram: 9 ewes);

January 1972—6 from 63 (10%) using artificial insemination only; July 1972—98 from 102 (97%) using paddock mating (1 ram: 10 ewes);

January 1973—28 from 80 (35%) using pen mating (1 ram: 10 ewes).

Satisfactory breeding performance was achieved at the July matings in both years, resulting in production of lambs for the early spring market. The very poor results of the January 1972 mating were associated with the problems of artificial insemination in the recently lambed ewe. The conception rate achieved at the January 1973 mating provided a clearer indication of the difficulty of achieving satisfactory remating within 40 days post partum, which is necessary to achieve a true 6-monthly lambing pattern.

The early initiation of the synchronization technique (7 days post partum) followed by mating only at the second oestrus in January 1973 appeared to offer some encouragement. While a number (48) of ewes were induced to lamb at least once at 6-monthly intervals, only one ewe lambed four times in 24 months.

A stochastic simulation was used to investigate the value of crossbreeding information in a two line crossbreeding system in poultry under different genetic scenarios. Populations consisted of 25 sires and 250 dams, which were mated to produce both purebred and crossbred progeny. The next generation parents were selected either based on purebred information (PLS) (sib means, and own performance for females) or additional crossbred sib means were included (CCPS). The trait under selection was controlled by 20 loci with varying degree of dominance. Pure lines differed in initial allele frequencies. If the trait was controlled by loci with partial dominance, little or no extra benefit was obtained from including crossbred information over the pure line information. Under complete dominance and overdominance CCPS outperformed PLS. As a practical rule, CCPS is better than PLS if the ratio between dominance variance and total genetic variance is around 0·3 or higher. In this case the most probable cause of the dominance variation is loci with full or overdominance.

Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) are highly susceptible to lipid oxidation because DDGS contain about 10% crude fat, which is largely composed of polyunsaturated fatty acids. l-carnitine serves an important function in fatty acids β-oxidation, and also has antioxidant properties. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of l-carnitine in the DDGS diet of gestating and lactating sows on reproductive performance, milk composition and antioxidant status of sows and their offspring. One hundred and twenty sows (Landrace×Large white, mean parity 4.2, initial BW 230 kg) were randomly allotted to 1 of 4 dietary treatments (n=30 sows/treatment). Treatments were arranged as a 2×2 factorial with two levels of dietary DDGS (0 v. 250 g/kg in gestating diets and 400 g/kg in lactating diets) and two levels of dietary l-carnitine (0 v. 100 mg/kg in gestating diets and 0 v. 200 mg/kg in lactating diets). Distillers dried grains with solubles had no significant effect on litter size but significantly reduced the birth weights and weaning weights of piglets (P<0.05). Distillers dried grains with solubles reduced the antioxidant enzyme activities (P<0.05) and increased the malondialdehyde level in the plasma of sows on day 60 of gestation (P=0.004) and day 14 of lactation (P=0.008). The compositions of colostrum and milk were not affected by inclusion of DDGS and dietary l-carnitine (P>0.05). Supplementing the diets with l-carnitine had no significant effect of total litter size (P>0.05) but increased the number of piglets born alive and piglets weaned, birth weight and weaning weight of piglets and litter weight at birth and weaning (P<0.05). l-carnitine supplementation also increased the concentration of l-carnitine in milk and l-carnitine status of piglets (P<0.05). The antioxidant enzyme activities of new born and weaning piglets were increased (P<0.05) by maternal dietary l-carnitine but this did not extend to finishing pigs. In conclusion, including DDGS in the sows diet could induce oxidative stress, which may be associated with the reduced individual birth and weaning weight of piglets. Dietary l-carnitine supplementation improved the antioxidant and l-carnitine status of sows, which may be associated with the improved reproduction and piglet performance and the antioxidant status of piglets at birth and weaning. There were no interactions between DDGS and l-carnitine.

The potential advantages of early weaning have been listed by Dr Braude in his introduction. In practice, however, piglet mortality can reduce or eliminate these potential improvements in number of piglets per sow per year, and in overall efficiency of feed energy utilization for piglet production (Table 1).

A total of 56 individually-penned pigs, with equal numbers of boars and gilts, were fed ad libitum in an investigation of the effects of nutrient density in growing (17 to 35 kg) and finishing (35 to 82 kg) periods.

Diets of high (H) and medium (M) nutrient density, with 13·8 or 12·6 MJ digestible energy (DE) per kg and 10·0 or 9·1 g lysine per kg, were used.

In the growing period, diet H proportionately increased the rates of DE intake and live-weight gain by 0·17 (P < 0·001) and 0·24 (P < 0·001) respectively. While the nutrient density of the diets given in the growing period did not significantly affect the mean performance over the finishing period, carry-over effects were observed for about 4 weeks following the change with evidence of compensation in energy intake.

In the finishing period, diet H proportionately increased the rates of consumption of DE and live-weight gain by 0·06 (P < 0·05) and 0·04 (P = 0·18) respectively. The consumption of energy was virtually identical for the two sexes.

It is concluded that the change in nutrient density had only transitory effects on energy intake and growth rate and did not affect overall performance in the finishing period.
