Selection for beef traits in Italian dual-purpose breeds is often carried out using growth and in vivo conformation recorded on young, performance tested bulls and muscularity traits scored during routinely linear type evaluation on primiparous cows. In this context, the knowledge of the genetic structure of traits obtained in different sexes and at different times is necessary for a proper selection plan. This study aimed to estimate, in the local dual-purpose Rendena breed, the genetic relationships between muscularity linear type traits from primiparous cows, the same traits scored on candidate young bulls, and the performance test traits recorded in candidate young bulls. Type traits included: front (chest and shoulder), back (loins and rump); thigh, buttocks side and rear views (two traits). Performance test traits were: average daily gain; EUROP fleshiness evaluation; and dressing percentage. Muscularity linear type traits were recorded on 11 992 first parity cows, and the muscularity type traits were scored on 957 candidate young bulls. Heritability estimates obtained for muscularity traits were moderate in young bulls (on average 0.326), about 16% higher than in primiparous cows. The average heritability for performance test traits in young bulls resulted 0.342. Moderate to strong genetic correlations were found between performance test and muscularity type traits collected in young bulls (from 0.500 between front (chest and shoulder) and average daily gain to 0.955 between thigh, buttocks side view and in vivo dressing percentage). The genetic relationships obtained between muscularity linear type traits of primiparous cows and performance traits of young bulls were variable (from a null correlation between front (chest and shoulder) and average daily gain to 0.822 between thigh, buttocks rear view and dressing percentage), with an average genetic correlation of 0.532. Generally, the traits measured during performance testing in young bulls were favourably correlated with muscularity traits evaluated on primiparous cows, indicating a common selection pathway.

In two experiments, straw diets were supplemented with a concentrate mixture containing either untreated or formaldehyde-treated soya-bean meal. In experiment 1, adult wether sheep were given straw/concentrate mixtures in a 3:1 ratio (air-dry basis) in restricted amounts. In experiment 2, these proportions were adjusted to 3:2 and the growing lambs were offered straw at proportionately 0·05 to 0·1 greater than that eaten daily.

In experiment 1, formaldehyde treatment of soya-bean meal depressed apparent nitrogen (N) digestibility (P < 0·001) although diet organic-matter digestibility was not affected. Formaldehyde treatment also tended to reduce N retention in experiment 1, whereas with growing lambs in experiment 2, it led to improved N retention. Plasma urea concentrations were reduced as a result of formaldehyde treatment of soya-bean meal. Digested N was more efficiently utilized by sheep given the treated soya-bean meal diet in experiment 2 but not in experiment 1. Lambs given the treated soya-bean meal diet tended to gain more live weight with marginally superior food conversion ratios while consuming similar amounts of dry matter as those given the untreated soya-bean meal-supplemented diet.

Data from Danish Progeny Testing Stations were used to investigate the relationship between the colour of meat and feed efficiency in pigs. For groups slaughtered during the summer there was a highly significant correlation. As the amount of feed consumed per unit live-weight gain declined so the meat became paler. For groups slaughtered in winter and for data pooled over the whole year, there was no significant correlation. Possible explanations of these findings are discussed.

The objective of this study was to define different terminal sire flock environments, based on a range of environmental factors, and then investigate the presence of genotype by environment interactions (G×E) between the environments identified. Data from 79 different terminal sire flocks (40 Texel, 21 Charollais and 18 Suffolk), were analysed using principal coordinate and non-hierarchical cluster analyses, the results of which identified three distinct environmental cluster groups. The type of grazing, climatic conditions and the use of vitamins and mineral supplements were found to be the most important factors in the clustering of flocks. The presence of G×E was then investigated using data from the Charollais flocks only. Performance data were collected for 12 181 lambs, between 1990 and 2010, sired by 515 different sires. Fifty six of the sires had offspring in at least two of the three different cluster groups and pedigree information was available for a total of 161 431 animals. Traits studied were the 21-week old weight (21WT), ultrasound muscle depth (UMD) and log transformed backfat depth (LogUFD). Heritabilities estimated for each cluster, for each trait, ranged from 0.32 to 0.45. Genetic correlations estimated between Cluster 1 and Cluster 2 were all found to be significantly lower than unity, indicating the presence of G×E. They were 0.31 (±0.17), 0.68 (±0.14) and 0.18 (±0.21) for 21WT, UMD and LogUFD, respectively. Evidence of sires re-ranking across clusters was also observed. Providing a suitable strategy can be identified, there is potential for the optimisation of future breeding programmes, by taking into account the G×E observed. This would enable farmers to identify and select animals with an increased knowledge as to how they will perform in their specific farm environment thus reducing any unexpected differences in performance.

In an investigation of factors responsible for the lower efficiency of carcass lean gain seen previously in steers offered grass silage diets 18 Simmental × British Friesian steers (361 (s.e. 5-35) kg) were offered one of three diets: a perennial ryegrass silage ad libitum and alone (S) or supplemented with rolled barley at 300 g/kg of total dry matter (SC) or supplemented as described but restricted (SCr) in quantity so as to provide the same dry matter (DM) and digestible energy (DE) intakes as for S. Eating (Eb), ruminating (Rb), standing (Sb) or lying (Lb) behaviour was quantified during four 24-h periods of manual observation. Eb was noted in more detail in a second experiment using computerized Calan-Broadbent gates and load cells to monitor times and rates of eating. Blood was taken via temporary indwelling jugular catheters at 30 to 60 min intervals on each of 4 days 1 month apart. Rumen fluid was sampled hourly for three 24-h periods from three rumen-cannulated steers given the same three diets in a separate 3 x 3 change-over design experiment.

Steers offered the restricted diet SCr ate most of their food in one extended meal within 6 h of feeding while two peak eating periods (morning and evening) were observed in steers offered the other two diets. Steers offered SCr spent more time in Sb (P < 0.05), and less time in Eb (P < 0·001) and Rb (P < 0·05) activities than did animals offered the two diets ad libitum (SC and S). Mean 24 h insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) concentrations and postprandial insulin concentrations were significantly higher with diet SCr than with diet S (P < 0·001) despite equal daily DM and DE intakes from each. Insulin appearance in the jugular vein reflected the pattern of food intake on all treatments. Rumen fermentation characteristics were largely unaffected by diet. Mean 24 h rumen volatile fatty acid, pH and ammonia concentrations did not differ between diets but post-prandial rumen pH tended to be lower in animals offered the SC and SCr diets.

Differences in patterns of food intake between animals offered food ad libitum and at a restricted level are likely to determine patterns of nutrient absorption and the secretion of nutritionally regulated splanchnic hormones. The higher proportions of Sb and Rb activities in steers offered the restricted diet represent an energy cost to these animals while the higher plasma IGF-1 and insulin concentrations also seen in these animals may collectively influence the partitioning of nutrients to the peripheral tissues and contribute to the increased efficiency of carcass lean deposition previously shown in animals offered such diets.

Negative energy balance (NEB) is an altered metabolic state in modern high-yielding dairy cows. This metabolic state occurs in the early postpartum period when energy demands for milk production and maintenance exceed that of energy intake. Negative energy balance or poor adaptation to this metabolic state has important effects on the liver and can lead to metabolic disorders and reduced fertility. The roles of regulatory factors, including transcription factors (TFs) and micro RNAs (miRNAs) have often been separately studied for evaluating of NEB. However, adaptive response to NEB is controlled by complex gene networks and still not fully understood. In this study, we aimed to discover the integrated gene regulatory networks involved in NEB development in liver tissue. We downloaded data sets including mRNA and miRNA expression profiles related to three and four cows with severe and moderate NEB, respectively. Our method integrated two independent types of information: module inference network by TFs, miRNAs and mRNA expression profiles (RNA-seq data) and computational target predictions. In total, 176 modules were predicted by using gene expression data and 64 miRNAs and 63 TFs were assigned to these modules. By using our integrated computational approach, we identified 13 TF-module and 19 miRNA-module interactions. Most of these modules were associated with liver metabolic processes as well as immune and stress responses, which might play crucial roles in NEB development. Literature survey results also showed that several regulators and gene targets have already been characterized as important factors in liver metabolic processes. These results provided novel insights into regulatory mechanisms at the TF and miRNA levels during NEB. In addition, the method described in this study seems to be applicable to construct integrated regulatory networks for different diseases or disorders.

In three experiments the effects of giving Hereford × Friesian cows 61 to 64 MJ/day of metabolizable energy in the last 8 weeks of pregnancy, followed by either 49 to 56 (L) or 85 to 100 (H) MJ/day for the first 8 weeks of lactation, were determined. A further comparison was made in experiment 3, in which energy intakes were restricted to 46 and 64 MJ/day (M) in the two periods respectively. The L and M groups had a similar average weight loss of approximately 55 kg over winter whereas the H groups maintained their weight. The L and M treatments had a negligible effect on milk production at 3 weeks post calving but they caused a significant depression at 6 weeks in experiments 2 and 3. Milk energy and protein concentrations were reduced in all three experiments. Calf growth was similar on both treatments in experiment 1 but was 9 to 13% lower in experiments 2 and 3 for the L and M groups compared with the H group. Reproductive performance was not significantly affected. There was a substantial increase in milk production for all groups on turnout to grazing. This was greater for the L and M groups so that their summer milk production was almost equal to that of the H group. Cows from L and M groups gained more weight at pasture. By the end of the trials cows and calves from all treatments had similar weights except in experiment 3, when cows from the L and M treatments were still lighter than those from the H treatment.

Birth weights of 568 Santa Gertrudis calves by 15 sires out of 111 different dams over a 14-year period were obtained from a herd in Cuba. Year of birth, season of birth, sex of calf, sire and dam all had highly significant influences upon birth weight but there was no effect of dam age or parity. Calf inbreeding ranged from 0 to 25% and led to a decrease of 012 kg in weight for each 1% increase in inbreeding. Calves surviving to weaning or dying between birth and weaning were of similar mean weight. Calves dying at birth were some 4·53 kg above the overall average of 38·59 kg. Sire effects covered a range of some 9·85 kg in birth weight. Heritability of birth weight estimated from an intra-class correlation between paternal half-sib groups was 0·67. Repeatability estimates were of the order of 0·22 from intra-class correlation and 0-24 on the basis of regression of later on earlier records. The overall least squares mean weight of 38-59 kg was several kg higher than previous estimates in the literature.

The use of altrenogest (ALT) supplementation for oestrous synchronization improves subsequent reproductive performance of gilts and sows. However, the causes of this improvement in reproductive performance after ALT treatment are not fully/clearly understood. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of ALT supplementation for oestrous synchronization in gilts on the endometrial glands and embryonic development characteristics at 28 days of pregnancy. Pregnant gilts were divided into two experimental treatments: Control (did not receive ALT; n = 9 gilts) and ALT (ALT feeding at 20 mg/day for 18 days; n = 9 gilts). At 28 days of pregnancy, six gilts from each treatment were slaughtered, and reproductive tracts were immediately evaluated. There was no statistical difference (P > 0.05) between treatments regarding ovulation rate, number of embryos, number of vital embryos and number of non-vital embryos. Embryo weight, length and embryonic vesicle weight were lower in ALT treatment compared with Control (P < 0.01), and it was lower in the cervical uterine region compared with apex uterine region, respectively (P < 0.05). Higher values of gland duct area, gland duct perimeter, percentage of the glandular area and total endometrial area were observed in ALT treatment compared with Control (P < 0.05). The use of ALT during 18 days for oestrous synchronization in gilts increased the gland duct area, perimeter and total endometrial area but did not increase the embryo number and embryo size at day 28 of pregnancy.

The aim of this trial was to determine the effects of a high winter feeding level on the performance of red deer calves from weaning to 15 months of age.

Two groups of 10 calves in each group were fed indoors from weaning to turn-out on good quality hay ad libitum. They received concentrates for 197 days, the first group (treatment H) ad libitum, and the second (treatment L) a daily quantity of 616 g dry matter (DM). At turn-out the two lots were grouped together for 149 days on natural pastures containing grass species characteristic of the area.

During the indoor period, treatment H calves consumed 2·5 times more concentrate than those in treatment L (272 v. 110 kg DM) and 2·8 times less hay (48 v. 234 kg DM). They weighed 19·6 kg more at turn-out (88·9 v. 69·3 kg). The difference in weight decreased to 8·8 kg at 15 months of age, but varied according to sex. This reduction of the weight gap between groups was due to the better adaptation of treatment L to pasture and to compensatory growth resulting from a higher grass intake after turn-out.

It is concluded that despite the good performance of treatment H animals in winter, a high energy level of feeding is only advantageous in certain cases. It is of benefit to animals that are to be slaughtered at 1 year of age and to lateborn calves, and can improve the frame development of females in their first breeding season.

Post-partum changes in the concentration of progesterone, oestradiol-17β and prolactin were measured by radioimmunoassay in the blood plasma and milk of 28 buffaloes. The mean concentration of progesterone in the plasma of normal animals was 0·24 ± 0·04 μ.g/1 on the day of calving and decreased linearly during the post-partum period, until the complete regression of the residual corpus luteum of pregnancy occurred, when the plasma concentration was recorded as 0μ05 to 0μ08 μg/l. The concentration at a silent oestrus was 0μ17 ± 0·02 μ.g/1. The milk progesterone profile was parallel to that of plasma but the level was 2 to 4 times higher.

The mean concentration of oestradiol-17β in plasma was 41·0 ± 2·34 ng/1 on the day of calving; it declined significantly by day 1 post partum (P < 0·001) and fluctuated between 8 and 16 ng/1 until oestrus, when the concentration was approximately 25 ng/1. The oestradiol-17β concentration in milk was significantly higher than that of plasma on the day of calving. During the first 20 days post partum, a similar concentration of oestradiol-17β was maintained in both fluids but thereafter the concentration in milk was 2 to 3 times that of plasma.

The mean concentration of prolactin in plasma was 212·6± 19·08 μg/1 on the day of calving and then declined and fluctuated between 70 and 270 μg/1 during the rest of the period. A minor elevation occurred around oestrus. The prolactin concentration for the first 2 days post partum in milk was significantly higher than that in plasma but during the rest of the period it was similar to that in plasma.

The progesterone concentrations were slightly lower in anoestrous animals than in those cycling. The concentration of prolactin was significantly higher in multiparous animals (P < 0·001), whilst the progesterone and oestradiol values were similar in primiparous and multiparous animals.

The diurnal feeding patterns of dairy cows affects the 24 h robot utilisation of pasture-based automatic milking systems (AMS). A decline in robot utilisation between 2400 and 0600 h currently occurs in pasture-based AMS, as cow feeding activity is greatly reduced during this time. Here, we investigate the effect of a temporal variation in feed quality and quantity on cow feeding behaviour between 2400 and 0600 h as a potential tool to increase voluntary cow trafficking in an AMS at night. The day was allocated into four equal feeding periods (0600 to 1200, 1200 to 1800, 1800 to 2400 and 2400 to 0600 h). Lucerne hay cubes (CP = 19.1%, water soluble carbohydrate = 3.8%) and oat, ryegrass and clover hay cubes with 20% molasses (CP = 11.8%, water soluble carbohydrate = 10.7%) were offered as the ‘standard’ and ‘preferred’ (preference determined previously) feed types, respectively. The four treatments were (1) standard feed offered ad libitum (AL) throughout 24 h; (2) as per AL, with preferred feed replacing standard feed between 2400 and 0600 h (AL + P); (3) standard feed offered at a restricted rate, with quantity varying between each feeding period (20:10:30:60%, respectively) as a proportion of the (previously) measured daily ad libitum intake (VA); (4) as per VA, with preferred feed replacing standard feed between 2400 and 0600 h (VA + P). Eight non-lactating dairy cows were used in a 4 × 4 Latin square design. During each experimental period, treatment cows were fed for 7 days, including 3 days habituation and 4 days data collection. Total daily intake was approximately 8% greater (P < 0.001) for the AL and AL + P treatments (23.1 and 22.9 kg DM/cow) as compared with the VA and VA + P treatments (21.6 and 20.9 kg DM/cow). The AL + P and VA treatments had 21% and 90% greater (P < 0.001) dry matter intake (DMI) between 2400 and 0600 h, respectively, compared with the AL treatment. In contrast, the VA + P treatment had similar DMI to the VA treatment. Our experiment shows ability to increase cow feeding activity at night by varying feed type and quantity, though it is possible that a penalty to total DMI may occur using VA. Further research is required to determine if the implementation of variable feed allocation on pasture-based AMS farms is likely to improve milking robot utilisation by increasing cow feeding activity at night.

Responses to intravenous glucose challenge (no. = 26) and basal metabolite and hormone concentrations (no. = 68) were determined in dairy cows selected for high (HFI) or low (LFI) milk-fat concentration but with similar 40 g/kg fat-corrected milk (FCM) yields. All cows were given a mixed diet ad libitum. Following a glucose challenge the insulin release was higher (P < 0·05) and the glucose clearance rate faster (P < 0·05) in the HFI cows compared with the LFI cows. Basal plasma concentrations of the metabolites alanine, β -hydroxybutyrate, glucose, non-esterified fatty acids and urea and the hormones insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), insulin and leptin were not influenced by selection line.

Before slaughter, lambs may experience several stressors such as feed and water deprivation, handling and transport that have the potential to negatively impact welfare and meat quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of pre-slaughter handling, exercise and the presence of a dog on the behaviour and physiology of lambs and meat quality at slaughter. At 6 months of age, 60 lambs (n=20 lambs/replicate; three replicates) were allocated to one of the two treatment groups (n=30 lambs/treatment): low (LOW) intensive handling or high (HIGH) intensive handling. LOW lambs were moved short distances, quietly and without the use of a dog before transport. HIGH lambs were moved quickly, long distances and with a dog present before transport. Lamb behaviour (standing, lying, rumination and panting) was recorded for 1 h before (post-treatment) and after transport (post-transport), and for 30 min before slaughter (pre-slaughter). Blood samples were collected before (baseline), after transport (post-transport) and at exsanguination (at slaughter) to assess cortisol, lactate and non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentrations. At slaughter, lamb carcases (M. longissimus lumborum) were evaluated for pH levels, drip and cook loss, and tenderness. HIGH lambs spent more time standing (P<0.001) and panting (P<0.001) and less time lying (P<0.001) and ruminating (P<0.001) post-treatment than LOW lambs, but more (P<0.001) time ruminating post-transport. All lambs spent more time standing (P<0.001) and less time lying (P<0.001) and panting (P<0.001) post-transport and pre-slaughter than post-treatment. Cortisol concentrations were greater (P<0.001) in lambs post-transport and at slaughter compared with baseline values. Lactate concentrations were lower (P=0.002) in HIGH than LOW lambs. In addition, NEFA concentrations were higher (P<0.001) post-transport and at slaughter in HIGH compared with LOW lambs. Ultimate pH was higher (P<0.001) in HIGH than LOW lambs and pH declined quicker (P=0.012) in LOW than HIGH lambs. Cook loss, drip loss and shear force were lower (P⩽0.05) in HIGH than LOW lambs. The HIGH intensive pre-slaughter handling regime used in the present study caused stress in lambs and increased ultimate pH that could potentially negatively impact welfare, product quality and consistency.

Broiler eggs were either incubated at 37.8°C during the whole incubation period (control), or at higher (38.8°C, group H) and lower temperatures (36.8°C, group L) from embryonic day (ED) 7 up to ED 10 (ED 7 to 10) or from ED 10 up to ED 13 (ED 10 to 13). Before and after this temperature treatment the eggs were incubated at 37.8°C. The day-old chicks were weighted, sexed and fed up to day 35. On days 1 and 35 samples were taken from the breast and leg muscles for analyzing of the mitochondrial respiratory activity (MRA) and from the breast muscles for analysis of the cross-sectional areas (CSA) and the glycogen phosphorylase (GP), phosphofructokinase (PFK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), citrate synthase (CS) and cytochrome oxidase (COX) activities. Statistical analysis showed that treatment (control, group H, group L), sex and their interaction, but not the treatment period (ED 7 to 10; ED 10 to 13), significantly influenced the results. Group H chicks had lower (P⩽0.05) body and heart weights but higher (P⩽0.05) liver weights, CSA values, leg MRA as well as PFK, LDH, CS, GP and COX activities compared with the group L chicks. The results of the control chicks differ (P⩽0.05) from those of the group H (body, heart weight, COX), the group L chicks (liver weight, PFK, LDH, CS, GP) or the birds of both other groups (CSA). The group H broiler had higher (P⩽0.05) body and leg weights as well as LDH, CS, COX and GP activities than the group L broilers. The BWs and the LDH and GP results of the control broiler differ (P⩽0.05) from those of both other groups or from the results of the group H (CS) and group L broiler (COX). Female broilers had lower (P⩽0.05) body, breast and leg weights, but higher (P⩽0.05) CSA, LDH, CS and GP activities than the male animals. Analysis of treatment×sex interaction showed that group H hens had higher (P⩽0.05) body and breast weights, LDH and GP activities compared with the group L hens, whereas in the male broiler no effect of the interaction could be found, except for the lower (P⩽0.05) CSA values in the group H than group L cocks. The treatment effects are probably due to altered embryonic activity and related molecular mechanisms. The sex-related differences in the broiler indicate that these alterations already occur in the embryos and chicks, but become significant with the sexual dimorphism after hatch.

The improvement in porcine embryo preservation and non-surgical embryo transfer (ET) procedures achieved in recent years represents essential progress for the practical use of ET in the pig industry. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of parity, weaning-to-estrus interval (WEI) and season on reproductive and embryonic parameters at day 6 after insemination of donor sows superovulated after weaning. The selection of donor sows was based on their reproductive history, body condition and parity. The effects of parity at weaning (2 to 3, 4 to 5 or 6 to 7 litters), season (fall, winter and spring), and WEI (estrus within 3 to 4 days), and their interactions on the number of corpus luteum, cysts in sows with cysts, number and quality of viable and transferable embryos, embryo developmental stage and recovery and fertilization rates were evaluated using linear mixed effects models. The analyses showed a lack of significant effects of parity, season, WEI or their interactions on any of the reproductive and embryonic parameters examined. In conclusion, these results demonstrate that fertilization rates and numbers of viable and transferable embryos collected at day 6 of the cycle from superovulated donor sows are not affected by their parity, regardless of the time of the year (from fall to spring) and WEI (3 or 4 days).

Young stock survival is a trait of crucial importance in cattle breeding as calf mortality leads to economic losses and represents an animal welfare issue. The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters and sire breeding values for young stock survival in beef x dairy crossbred calves. Two traits were analysed with a univariate animal model: young stock survival between 1 to 30 days and 31 to 200 days after birth. Breed combinations with Belgian Blue sires outperformed all other sire breeds. The lowest survival rates were found for breed combinations with Jersey dams or Blonde d’Aquitaine sires. The results showed low but significant heritabilities (0.045 to 0.075) for both survival traits. Differences in breeding values between sires ranged from −2.5% to 3.5% and from −5.4% to 4.7% survival from 1 to 30 days and 31 to 200 days, respectively. Based on these findings, we concluded that it is feasible to breed for improved young stock survival in beef x dairy crossbred calves. This will hopefully contribute to increasing the survival rate of the calves and reduce economic losses for the farmers.

The taste responses of pygmy goats to addition of gymnemic acid (GymA), inosinic acid (InoA), or monosodium glutamate (MSG) t o sucrose or quinine monohydrochloride (QHC1) solutions were studied. Addition of 20, 40 or 100 p.p.m. GymA to 25 % sucrose (aversive) solution caused the goats to show strong preference responses. Addition of GymA to a 30 % sucrose solution did not change the response from strong rejection. Addition of GymA to 1000 p.p.m. QHC1 did not change the strong rejection response, but additions of 10, 20, 60, 80 or 100 p.p.m. GymA to a 200 p.p.m. QHC1 solution changed the response from rejection to non-discrimination or weak preference.

Addition of 50 to 500 p.p.m. InoA to 0·08 % sucrose solution did not change the response from non-discrimination; InoA added to a 6·25 p.p.m. QHC1 solution, changed the response from non-discrimination to rejection at 50 p.p.m. and to strong rejection at 250 p.p.m. When MSG was added to 0·08% sucrose solution, the response remained non-discriminatory until 500 p.p.m. MSG was reached; this elicited a weak rejection. MSG (5, 50, or 500 p.p.m.) added to 10 % sucrose solution, changed the response from moderate preference o t non-discrimination. With 30 % sucrose solution the response was changed from weak rejection to non-discrimination by addition of 5 or 50 p.p.m. MSG but reverted to weak rejection at 250 p.p.m. MSG and to non-discrimination at 500 p.p.m. MSG. The addition of 5 to 250 p.p.m. MSG to 100 p.p.m. QHC1 solution changed the taste response from moderate rejection to non-discrimination; 500 p.p.m. resulted in slight rejection. Addition of 5 to 500 p.p.m. MSG to 6·25 p.p.m. QHC1 solution did not change the response from non-discrimination.

Three groups each of 14 cows, balanced for stage of lactation and potential milk yield, were kept either on a control treatment C, grazing within a rigid rotational grazing system, or on a leader (L) and follower (F) grazing system operated within a similar system. The stocking rate of treatment C was 5·76 cows/ha, the same as the overall stocking rate of treatments L and F. In Experiment 1, a 10-week continuous-type randomized block experiment was preceded by a 4-week uniformity period; in Experiment 2, a 3 × 3 Latin square design was adopted with periods of 4 weeks. Herbage intake and milk yield were only slightly, and not significantly (P > 0·05), higher in the leader than control cows, whilst the performance of cows on treatment F fell significantly (P< 0·001) below the other treatments. In treatment L, cows in early lactation responded to the extra opportunity for herbage selection with significantly (P< 0·01) more milk than those in late lactation. The mean milk production of the leader and follower cows was similar to that of the control cows. It is suggested that the potential value of a ‘leader and follower’ grazing system is unlikely to be greater than that of a conventional rotational grazing system.

In three experiments housed Greyface (Border Leicester × Scottish Blackface) ewes of mean live weight 68 kg received 0·91 kg hay plus 0·91 kg molassed sugar beet pulp daily during the second half of pregnancy and in the first 3 weeks of lactation. Comparisons were made with additions of crude protein given as urea or groundnut cake either during the whole period or only during early lactation. In one experiment, increasing the daily intake of digestible crude protein from 88 to about 140 g had no effect on the weight of the lamb at birth or at 3 weeks. In the other two experiments, in which the increases were from 58·70 g to 131·161 g or from 80 to about 125 g digestible crude protein per day there were highly significant increases in the weight of the lamb at birth (+0·43 and +0·31 kg) and 3 weeks (+1·44 and +1·46 kg). Introduction of either urea or groundnut cake to the diet on the day after lambing significantly increased the the 3-week weights of the lambs by amounts which were comparable to those found when urea had also been given during pregnancy. Supplementation with either urea or groundnut cake did not significantly increase ewe live weight.

Concentrations of urea in the blood of the ewes were highly significantly increased by either urea or groundnut supplementation. There were indications that a concentration below 10 mg/100 ml in the blood of the ewes in late pregnancy or early lactation was associated with a reduction in lamb growth rates.
