1. An experiment was undertaken with 44 finishing steers (initially of more than 400 kg live weight) into the effects of copper and cobalt treatments.

2. Significant responses to copper treatment of up to 0·41 kg per head per day of live-weight gain were obtained.

3. A different response to copper treatment between Friesian and beef-type (Hereford or Devon) steers reflected not a true breed effect but a difference in initial copper status.

4. Cobalt bullet therapy proved to be ineffective in maintaining normal plasma vitamin B12 concentrations over the course of the experiment although liver cobalt levels were generally adequate.

Digestibility was estimated in vitro from a total of 167 oesophageal fistula samples collected over a period of 16 to 24 months from adult sheep grazing eight Phalaris tuberosa-Trifolium repens pastures stocked continuously at rates of from 2·5 to 37·1 sheep per ha. Corresponding estimates of the nitrogen content of the faeces and of the fistula samples, the live weight and faecal output of the sheep, and of the herbage availability of the pasture were obtained.

The observations were stratified on the bases of stocking rate, digestibility, month of the year, herbage availability or organicmatter intake. Relationships between digestibility estimated by the fistula technique and faecal nitrogen content (model B) and between digestibility and faecal nitrogen content, nitrogen content of the dietary dry and organic matter, and faecal output per unit live weight (model A) were calculated for each stratum.

There were significant differences between relationships derived for the various stocking rates, levels of digestibility, times of year, levels of intake and levels of herbage availability; predicted values of digestibility for given values of the independent variables differed by as much as 20 units of digestibility. Model A was substantially more precise than model B.

Differences between estimates of digestibility, derived by the fistula technique and by a general faecal nitrogen—digestibility relationship, established by Lambourne and Reardon (1963a) were calculated. The differences were related to digestibility and to herbage availability.

The implications of these results are discussed and it is concluded that faecal nitrogen content is not a satisfactory index of the digestibility of the diet selected by grazing sheep.

The faecal recovery of chromium sesquioxide (Cr203) was examined in four experiments with non-lactating Ayrshire cows. In the first experiment Cr203-paper was given intraruminally twice daily to cows receiving a diet of hay. The mean recovery of the marker was 0·829 (s.d., (Mil, no. = 12). In the second experiment the marker was given as Cr203 powder to cows receiving a diet of hay and ground barley. The powder was mixed with the barley part of the diet and given in 24 hourly meals per day. The mean recovery of the marker was 0·944 (s.d., 0·079, no. = 8). In the third experiment cows receiving a hay and barley diet were given Cr203 powder suspended in ground-nut oil administered twice daily through a cannula in the duodenum. The recovery of the marker was 0·980 (s.d., 0·027, no. = 3).

In the fourth experiment ground straw impregnated with Cr203 was used as a marker in cows receiving a hay and barley diet. The marker was mixed with the barley and given in eight meals per day. The faecal recovery of Cr2()3 was 0-941 (s.d., 0·022, no. = 7). It is concluded that when Cr203 is used as an indigestible marker in studies with dairy cows its recovery in faeces may be variable and low due to retention of the marker in the stomach. In digestion studies with cows there are considerable advantages in favour of the use of Cr2()3-impregnated straw rather than Cr203 powder or Cr203-paper.

Measurements of respiratory exchanges in genuine exercise conditions are undoubtedly of interest to further define the energy needs of endurance horses. However, the equine K4b2, the gas exchanges portable device validated for equines, has not been used in Arabian endurance horses yet. Therefore, the objective of this study was to implement field cardio-respiratory measurements in such horses using the equine K4b2 in order to assess energy expenditure (EE). Measurements of heart rate (HR), oxygen uptake (VO2), carbon dioxide production (VCO2), respiratory frequency (RF), tidal volume (VT) and minute expired volume (VE) were carried out at rest and during a 20-min submaximal incremental field exercise in five trained Arabian endurance horses equipped with the K4b2 system. The relationship between HR and VO2 was determined for each horse. EE of the exercise session was calculated from direct VO2 measurements and individual HR-VO2 regression. Out of the five horses, four tolerated the equipment. Respiratory and metabolic variables at rest and during exercise, as well as EE measured at the different gaits, were consistent with reported values in exercising horses: VO2 ranged from 4.8 to 54.1 ml/min per kg from rest to canter, respectively, and EE from 82 to 1095 J/min per kg BW. The 20-min exercise session EE accounted for 6258 and 6332 J from direct VO2 measurements and individual HR-VO2 regression, respectively, which did not differ significantly. Providing an adaptation period and several technical adjustments, the present equine K4b2 could be used to assess EE in Arabian endurance horses in a controlled environment. The prediction of EE from the individual VO2–HR relationship might be an alternative method to evaluate EE when VO2 measurements are not possible.

1. Gestation diets formulated to contain A, 9 or B, 11 % protein, and lactation diets with C, 13; D, 15; E, 17 and F, 19 % protein provided eight treatment combinations. They were given at 2 kg/day in gestation and approximately 5·7 kg/day in lactation to sows at eight centres, which remained on experiment for 3 to 5 parities and produced in total 529 litters. Mean results for parities 1 to 3 are given in this summary.

2. Sows given more protein during gestation (i.e. diet A v. B) gained more weight in gestation (18·3 v. 22·5 kg net gain) but lost more in lactation (—1·7 v. —5·2 kg). Their offspring were significantly heavier at birth (1·31 v. 1·36 kg) and at 3 weeks old (5·28 v. 5·49 kg), but not at 6 weeks old (weaning).

3. Giving more protein in lactation caused linear increases in piglet weights at 3 and 6 weeks, and a linear reduction in creep feed consumption. From a sample of sows whose milk yields were recorded, extra protein appeared to increase milk yield and its protein content. Extra protein for lactating sows also reduced their live-weight loss in lactation, but this effect was partially counterbalanced by smaller gains in gestation.

4. No treatment had consistent significant effects on litter size or on the interval from weaning to conception. There were no significant interactions between gestation and lactation protein concentrations.

5. The generally large differences between centres were in a few cases associated with centre × treatment interactions, but these were not such as to cast doubt on the general applicability of the main findings of the experiment.

6. From this and an earlier experiment the minimum protein level for diets based on barley was concluded to be 11 % during gestation and 15% during lactation. For lactation diets, however, the economic optimum level may be > 15 %.

Lower egg shell temperatures (EST) during the first 2 weeks of incubation, notionally known as Slow start incubation, extended the standing time of a 5-week-old fast feathering meat chicken parent line. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of Slow start incubation on the standing ability of commercial meat chickens. Eggs from two strains of meat chickens, Strains 1 and 2, were incubated using either the Slow start incubation, (the initial EST was 36.75°C followed by a gradual increase in EST, reaching 37.8°C at day 16 of incubation), or Control incubation (EST 37.75°C to 38°C from the start of incubation until day 18 of incubation). Eggs were observed every 6 h from 468 h until 516 h of incubation to identify chick hatch window. At 516 h of incubation all chicks were taken out of the incubator (take-off). Chicks from each Strain and incubation treatment were randomly selected for assessment of chick weight, chick length, yolk sac weight, serum Ca and P, and femoral bone ash (BA). All unhatched eggs were inspected to determine the stage of embryo failure. Remaining chicks were grown for 5 weeks in floorpens. Weekly feed intake (FI), chick weight and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were determined. At 35 days of age the standing ability of visibly male birds was assessed in a latency-to-lie test. Compared to the Control, Slow start incubation delayed the average hatch time of both strains by ∼13 h, and reduced hatchability with 4.6% live but unhatched chicks, which was most evident in Strain 2. Significant differences due to main effects only were observed at take-off. Strain 1 chicks were significantly heavier and longer with higher serum Ca but significantly lower BA and serum P than Strain 2. Slow start incubation generated significantly heavier chicks that were shorter, but had significantly heavier yolk sacs, lower serum Ca but higher serum P than Control incubated chicks. During the 1st week post hatch Strain 1 Control incubated chicks had significantly higher FI and higher FCR than all other Strain and incubation treatments. At 35 days of age Slow start incubated birds of both Strains stood significantly longer than those from the Control incubation. This experiment clearly demonstrated the ability of Slow start incubation of commercial meat chickens to improve their leg strength.

A feeding trial was conducted on 24 individually-fed pigs given either a diet containing plant protein with insufficient Iysine and methionine or the same diet with optimal Iysine and methionine levels. Supplementation of the diet with synthetic amino acids significantly improved daily live-weight gain, feed conversion, nitrogen balance, loin eye muscle area and total yield of lean muscle.

Pigs receiving insufficient Iysine and methionine were characterized by lower haemoglobin and creatinine values accompanied by a decreased level of glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase.

There were highly significant differences in the blood and liver Iysine levels of the two treatments, and significant differences in the fresh muscle and in the pressed muscle juice Iysine levels.

The ratios between liver and blood Iysine levels and between dietary or muscle Iysine levels and % of nitrogen retention were calculated and found to be the same on both treatments.

The accumulation of Iysine in liver and muscle was linearly related to the blood Iysine level and to N retention and Iysine intake.

Black and White dual-purpose cattle (DSN) are kept in diverse production systems, but the same set of genetic parameters is used for official national genetic evaluations, neglecting the herd or production system characteristics. The aim of the present study was to infer genetic (co)variance components within and across defined herd descriptor groups or clusters, considering only herds keeping the local and endangered DSN breed. The study considered 3659 DSN and 2324 Holstein Friesian (HF) cows from parities one to three. The 46 herds always kept DSN cows, but in most cases, herds were ‘mixed’ herds (Mixed), including both genetic lines HF and DSN. In order to study environmental sensitivity, we had a focus on the naturally occurring negative energy balance in the early lactation period. In consequence, traits were records from the 1st official test-day after calving for milk yield (Milk-kg), somatic cell score (SCS) and fat-to-protein ratio (FPR). Genetic parameters were estimated in bivariate runs (separate runs for the three genetic lines Mixed, HF and DSN), defining the same trait from different herd groups or clusters as different traits. Additive-genetic variances and heritabilities were larger in herd groups that indicated superior herd management, implying that cow records from these herds allow a better genetic differentiation. Superior herd management included larger herds, low calving age, high herd production levels and low intra-herd somatic cell count. Herd descriptor group differences in additive-genetic variances for Milk-kg were stronger in HF than in DSN, indicating environmental sensitivity for DSN. Similar variance components and heritabilities across groups, clusters and genetic lines were found for data stratification according to geographical descriptors altitude and latitude. Considering 72 bivariate herd group runs, 29 genetic correlations were very close to 1 (mostly for Milk-kg). Somatic cell score was the trait showing the smallest genetic correlations, especially in the DSN analyses, and when stratifying herds according to genetic line compositions (rg=0.11), or according to the percentage of natural service sires (rg=0.08). For estimations based on the results of a cluster analysis considering several herd descriptors simultaneously, indications for genotype × environment interactions could be found for SCS, but genetic correlations were larger than 0.80 for Milk-kg and FPR. In conclusion, we suggest multiple-trait animal model applications in genetic evaluations, in order to select the best sires for specific herd environments or herd clusters.

To determine effects of photoperiod and ovaries and their interactions on live-weight (LW) gain, carcass composition, growth hormone (GH), insulin (INS) and prolactin (PRL), crossbred beef heifers were utilized. Heifers (no. = 70) were blocked by LW and assigned to a pre-treatment slaughter group for estimation of initial carcass composition or to treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial experiment (no. = 14 per treatment). Main effects were: photoperiod (8 h light (L): 16 h dark (D) v. 16L: 8D) and ovaries (intact (INT) v. ovariectomized (OVX)). Heifers were given a maize-based mixed diet (115 g protein and 11·5 MJ metabolizable energy per kg dry matter) ad libitum once per day at 07.30 h. On days 64 and 138, blood samples were taken every 30 min for 10 h from five heifers in each treatment. On day 144 treated heifers were slaughtered. Relative to OVX heifers, INT heifers had greater (P < 0·01) average LW gain (1·03 v. 1·17 kg/day), carcass weight (252 v. 270 kg) and carcass protein accretion rates (68 v. 82 g/day) but carcass fat accretion was not affected (P < 0·l; 381 v. 399 g/day). Compared with 8L: 16D, exposure to 16L: 8D non-significantly increased LW gain more in OVX heifers (16 kg) than in INT heifers (3 kg). Photoperiod did not significantly influence weight or composition of the carcass. There was no significant interaction between photoperiod and ovaries on carcass composition. Across all heifers GH declined (P < 0·05) and INS and PRL increased (P < 0·05) from day 64 to 138. Compared with 8L: 16D, exposure to 16L: 8D increased PRL on day 64 (P < 0·05; 13·4 v. 28·5 u.g/1) and decreased INS averaged across days 64 and 138 (P = 0·l; 0·71 v. 0·55 u/l) but had no effect on GH. GH, INS and PRL did not differ between INT and OVX heifers. It is concluded that ovariectomy of heifers reduces LW gains, carcass weights and accretion of protein, and that exposure to 16L: 8D partially prevents the loss in LW gain.

Wastage and culling rates in Private Milk Records herds during a three year period, October 1957 to September 1960, were estimated from data collected byfieldsmenduring one week in each month.

Total deaths and disposals among cows fell from 29·3% in 1957–8 to 23·4% in 1959–60 due mainly to reductions in the sales of surplus cows, non-attested cows and reactors to tuberculin. Wastage and culling among cows tended to be higher in winter than in summer. The rate of loss tended to increase in successive lactations and the percentage of animals sold for dairying fell from the third lactation onwards whilst disease, accident and old age became increasingly important reasons for culling.

Total deaths and disposals among heifers fell from 17·3% in 1957–8 t o 11·3% in 1959–60 due mainly to a reduction in the sale of stock for purposes other than dairying as ‘surplus’ or ‘fat’, and to a fall in the numbers sold for dairying for miscellaneous reasons. There was a peak in heifer disposals in early summer.

It is estimated that the average herd life in P.M.R. herds from first calving o t disposal is between 3½ and 4½ years and that average total productive life from first calving to death is between 5 and 6 years.

Four 2½-year-old Suffolk rams were each mated to groups of 24 Polled Dorset Horn ewes in which the oestrous cycles had been synchronized by the use of progestagen-impregnated vaginal sponges. Ram introduction occurred at either 24 or 48 hr after vaginal sponge withdrawal. Few ewes were in oestrus 24 hr after sponge withdrawal, but the majority were showing oestrus at the time of the 48-hr introduction. Mating behaviour and subsequent lambing performance of the ewes were recorded. All rams mated with the majority of their ewes. Rams introduced 48 hr after sponge withdrawal were found o t serve their ewes less frequently and over a more limited period, but they did succeed in mating with a greater proportion of their ewes during their first 30 services. There were no statistically significant differences in overall lambing rate between treatments, but the ratio of ewes lambing to ewes served on the 48-hr treatment was 92·5% compared with 72·2% for the 24-hr treatment (P < 0·05).

A crossbreeding experiment involving Timahdit (T), D'man (D) and improved sire breeds (M) was conducted to compare lamb production in five crossbreeding types: D ✕ D, T ✕ T, D ✕ T (DT), M ✕ T, and M ✕ DT lambs. Reproductive and production traits were analysed in 1187 litters, 1586 lambs born and 1346 lambs weaned, progeny of 605 ewes. Effects of crossbreeding type, year of birth, sex of lamb, age of dam, and type of birth were significant on the majority of traits studied. The D ✕ D and M ✕ DT crossbreeding system showed the highest litter sizes at lambing and at weaning with respective values in D ✕ D (2·17, 1·34) and M ✕ DT (1·72, 1·39). Ewes bearing the M ✕ DT cross lambs showed the highest (P < 0·05) litter weight at weaning (28·28 kg) followed by those with M ✕ T (23·14 kg), and D ✕ D (22·53 kg) lambs. M ✕ DT and M ✕ T lambs were heavier and grew faster than the other lambs. On the other hand, lamb survival rates and growth traits were the lowest in D ✕ D but those in T ✕ T and D ✕ T genetic types of lamb were intermediate. Results showed that D as a dam breed had a favourable effect on litter size (P < 0·01) but unfavourable effect on lamb survival and birth weight. The reproductive performance of DT crossbred ewes, due to their high prolificacy and lamb survival, associated with the favourable effect of an improved terminal sire (M) for growth traits, indicated that the three breed cross (M ✕ DT) could enhance lamb production in Morocco.

Glucocorticoid receptor (GR) transcription is driven by alternative promoters to produce different exon 1 mRNA variants. CpG methylation on GR promoters profoundly affects GR transcription. GR in hippocampus is critical for energy homeostasis and stress responses, yet it remains unclear whether hippocampal expression of GR exon 1 mRNA variants and the methylation status of GR promoters differ between Large White (LW) and Erhualian (EHL) pigs showing distinct metabolic and stress-coping characteristics. EHL pigs had higher hippocampus weight relative to BW (P<0.01), which was associated with higher serum cortisol level compared with LW pigs. Hippocampal expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (P<0.05) was significantly higher, while Bax, a pro-apoptotic gene, was significantly lower in EHL pigs (P<0.05). Hippocampal expression of total GR did not differ between breeds, yet GR exon 1 to 11 mRNA was significantly higher (P<0.01) in EHL pigs, which was associated with a trend of increase (P=0.057) in GR protein content. No significant breed difference was detected for the methylation status across the whole region of the proximal GR promoter, while CpG334 and CpG266.267 were differentially methylated, in a reversed manner, between breeds. The methylation status of CpGs 248, 259, 260, 268 and 271 was negatively correlated (P<0.05) with GR exon 1 to 11 mRNA abundance. Our results provide fundamental information on the breed-specific characteristics of GR and its mRNA variants expression and the status of DNA methylation on the proximal GR promoter in the pig hippocampus.

One hundred Friesian heifers were tail-painted between 14 and 21 days after calving. Once a week the paint strip was renewed if any paint had been removed. Over the whole period of observation the ovulation detection rate by definite signs of oestrus was high (0·79), whilst the proportion of silent ovulations detected by tail paint removal was low (0·10). In addition, tail paint was not removed on 0·28 of the occasions when definite oestrus with ovulation occurred and on 0·26 of the occasions when all the paint was removed it was not associated with any reproductive event. In practice, the critical time for tail paint to be effective is during the service period. Again, tail paint identified fewer (P < 0·001) ovulations than definite signs of oestrus (0·66) and had a significantly higher false positive rate (P < 0·001). Month of calving did not affect these results but the accuracy of tail paint declined as the season progressed (P < 0·001). False positive indications were not associated with individual animal characteristics. In a second trial 43 cows were tail-painted and 43 were not. There was no significant difference in the mean number of days from calving to first insemination or successful pregnancy between the two groups. It is concluded that in these trials tail paint was not an effective or reliable aid or alternative to oestrus detection.

Three 28-day trials were carried out to determine the optimum dietary lysine concentration for growing pigs between 20 and 68 kg. There were 96 pairs of pigs in experiment 1 (20 to 41 kg), 72 pairs in experiment 2 (40 to 68 kg) and 42 groups (14 per group) in exp. 3 (40 to 62 kg). All experiments were arranged as randomized complete block designs, blocked on the basis of sex and start weight. Treatments consisted of isoenergetic (13·8 MJ digestible energy per kg) diets with increasing lysine concentrations. Dietary lysine concentrations were 9·7, 10·7, 11·6, 12·5, 13·5 and 14·4 g/kg (experiment 1) and 9·0, 9·9, 11·0, 12·1, 13·1 and 14·1 g/kg (experiments 2 and 3). Response curves were fitted to the data to determine the optimum dietary lysine concentration for maximum average daily gain (ADG) and minimum food conversion ratio (FCR). In experiment 1, ADG and FCR responded quadratically to dietary lysine content (P < 0·01 and P < 0·05). Male pigs had better FCR and lysine conversion ratio (LCR) than female pigs (P < 0·05). In experiment 2, there was a quadratic effect of increasing dietary lysine concentration on FCR (P < 0·05). Male pigs had lower daily food intake (DFI, P < 0·01) and daily lysine intake (DLYIN, P < 0·01) and had better FCR (P < 0·01) and LCR (P < 0·01) than female pigs. In experiment 3, there was a quadratic effect of increasing lysine concentration on FCR (P < 0·05). Male pigs had better FCR and LCR (P < 0·05) than female pigs. In all experiments, increasing dietary lysine concentration resulted in an increase in DLYIN and a deterioration in LCR (all linear, P < 0·001). Regression analysis predicted optimum dietary lysine concentrations for maximum ADG at 13·1 and 12·7 g lysine per kg in experiments 1 and 2, and minimum FCR at lysine concentrations of 14·6, 12·2 and 12·7 g/kg for experiments 1, 2 and 3 respectively. In conclusion, the optimum dietary lysine concentration for maximum ADG and minimum FCR could be predicted using quadratic models and although males had better FCR than females, optimum dietary lysine concentrations were similar for both sexes.

Four silages were prepared from perennial ryegrass: two unwilted, ensiled either without (UWN) or with formic acid additive (UWA) and two wilted for either 19 (WS) or 43 h (WL) prior to ensiling. The influence of conservation method on digestion in the rumen and the flow of organic mater (OM) and nitrogen (N) to the small intestine was studied using young steers fitted with rumen and duodenal T-piece cannulae. The silages were well preserved and of similar chemical composition despite a 1·5-fold increase in dry matter (DM) following wilting. The unwilted silages had a higher concentration of fermentation acids and a lower concentration of soluble N in the DM. Polyester bag studies showed that significantly more DM was potentially degradable but the degradation rate was slower in the rumen of steers fed UWA and WS silages (P < 0·05), however, rate of passage was not significantly different for the four treatments. Conservation method had little effect on post-feeding rumen ammonia concentration but feeding unwilted silages caused a greater depression in post-feeding rumen pH (P < 0·05). Wilting lowered N digestibility in the whole tract (P < 0·05), but had no effect on apparent digestion or degradability of N in the rumen as measured by the polyester bag method. Apparent OM digestibility in the whole tract was lower in steers given wilted rather than unwilted silages (P < 0·05), but disappearance of apparently digestible OM in the rumen was greatest for the 19 h wilted silage (WS, P < 0·05). It is concluded that, provided unwilted silage is well preserved, the use of formic acid has little effect on digestion of silage by steers and the effects of wilting are confined to a reduction in whole tract digestibility.

Loose farrowing pens have been considered as alternatives to crates to enhance sow welfare. A major concern with pen systems is often higher piglet pre-weaning mortality, especially due to crushing by the sow. An optimal management of light and mat surface temperature may promote greater piglet use of the creep, which has been associated with reduced piglet crushing. A total of 108 sows and their piglets were studied in sow welfare and piglet protection pens on a commercial piggery, across two replicates. Sows were randomly assigned to pens arranged within two creep treatments (bright creep: 300 lx v. dark creep: 4 lx), considering mat temperature as a covariate. Twelve sows and their litters in each treatment (24 in total) had their behaviour continuously recorded for 72-h postpartum (pp), and four focal piglets per litter were weighed on the first and third days pp. In situ behaviour observations were performed daily (from 0800 to 1700 h) on all sows and their litters, every 15 min over 72-h pp to record piglet time spent in the creep, latency to enter the creep for the first time, latency for the litter to remain in the creep for at least 10 min, and piglet and sow use of pen areas immediately in front of (A2) and farthest from the creep (A3). Piglets with access to bright creeps spent on average 7.2% more time (P<0.01) in the creeps than piglets in pens with Dark creeps. In addition, for each degree increase in mat temperature, piglets spent on average 2.1% more time (P<0.01) in the creep. Piglets in pens with bright creeps spent less time in A2 (P=0.04) and the least time in A3 (P=0.01). Light or mat temperature did not affect sow use of pen areas or piglet weight gain. Piglets with bright creeps tended (P=0.06) to take longer to enter the creep for the first time after birth, but the latency for 30.0% of the litter to remain clustered for 10 min tended (P=0.08) to be shorter in bright compared to dark creeps. Overall, piglet use of the creep increased with warm mat temperatures and brightness, which should be further investigated as potential strategies to promote piglet safety and reduce crushing in pen farrowing systems.

Lambs were allocated to three treatments: control (C), monensin (M) and lasalocid sodium (L) in a concentrate diet containing 36 mg copper per kg food. After 2 months deaths from copper toxicity occurred and the trial was terminated. All lambs were slaughtered. The mean liver copper concentration (mg/kg dry matter) of 1907 in the M treatment was higher than the mean concentrations of 1342 and 1229 in the C and L groups respectively (P < 0·01). Total liver copper was 234, 260 and 230 mg and the retention of dietary copper in the liver was 93·5, 108·5 and 93·3 g/kg for the C, M and L treatments respectively. These differences were not significant. From reduced liver size (as a proportion of body weight) and high copper levels in the kidneys, it was concluded that the group given monensin had accumulated copper to a level closer to the toxicity threshold than the other two groups.

Pigs living in commercial husbandry systems may experience both acute stress due to standard management procedures and chronic stress through limitations in their barren housing environment. This might influence their immune status, including antibody responses to neural and danger autoantigens. Levels of natural autoantibody (NAAb)-binding phosphorylcholine-conjugated bovine serum albumin (PC-BSA) and myelin basic protein (MBP) were measured over time in pigs that were kept in environmental enriched v. barren housing, and that underwent a regrouping test. In total, 480 pigs were housed in 80 pens in either barren or straw-enriched pens from 4 through 23 weeks of age. Blood samples were taken from pigs before (week 8), and 3 days after a 24 h regrouping test (week 9), and at 22 weeks of age. Phosphorylcholine-conjugated bovine serum albumin (PC-BSA) and MBP antibody titres in serum were measured using ELISA. Enriched-housed pigs had higher levels of IgM-binding MBP, and tended to have higher levels of IgG-binding MBP and IgA-binding PC-BSA than barren-housed pigs. Each NAAb measured in this study was affected by gender and litter. These results suggest that enriched housing conditions, as well as acute regrouping stress, have an influence on levels of serum NAAb-binding danger and neural antigens in pigs.

The aim of this experiment was to, under typical Swedish production conditions, evaluate the effects of grass silages subjected to different N-fertilisation regimes fed to dairy cows on the fatty acid (FA) composition of their milk, and to compare the grass silages in this respect to red clover-dominated silage. Grass silages made from first year Phleum pratense L. leys subjected to three N-fertilisation regimes (30, 90 and 120 kg N/ha, designated G-30, G-90 and G-120, respectively) and a mixed red clover–grass silage (Trifolium pratense L. and P. pratense L.; 60/40 on dry matter (DM) basis, designated RC–G) were produced. The experiment was conducted as a change-over design, including 24 primiparous and multiparous dairy cows of the Swedish Red breed, each of which was allocated to three of the four diets. The cows were offered 11 kg DM of silage and 7 kg concentrates. The silages had similar DM and energy concentrations. The CP concentration increased with increase in N-fertilisation level. There was a linear increase in DM intake of the different silages with increased N fertilisation. There were also differences in concentrations of both individual and total FAs amongst silages. The daily milk production (kg/day) did not significantly differ between treatments, but G-30 silage resulted in higher concentrations of 18:2n-6 in the milk compared with the other two grass silages. The highest concentrations of 18:3n-3 and cis-9, trans-11 18:2 were found in milk from cows offered the RC–G silage. The G-30 diet resulted in higher concentration of 18:2n-6 and the same concentration of 18:3n-3 in the milk as the other grass silages, despite lower intake levels of these FAs. The apparent recoveries of 18:3n-3 from feed to milk were 5.74%, 4.27%, 4.10% and 5.31% for G-30, G-90, G-120 and RC–G, respectively. A higher recovery when red clover is included in the diet confirms previous reports. The higher apparent recovery of 18:3n-3 on the G-30 treatment may be related to the lower silage DM intake, which led to a higher relative proportion of ingested FAs originating from concentrates compared with the G-90 and G-120 diets. With the rates and types of concentrates used in this study, the achieved differences in FA composition among the silages were not enough to influence the concentrations of unsaturated FAs in milk.
