This research compared three wood-chip out-wintering pad (OWP; an unsheltered OWP; a sheltered OWP (both with a concrete feed apron); and an unsheltered OWP with silage provided directly on top of the wood-chip bedding (self-feed OWP)) designs and cubicle housing with regard to dairy cow performance during the pre-partum period, and for 8 weeks post partum. Data were compared during 2 years. In Year 1, the unsheltered (space allowance = 12 m2 per cow) and sheltered (6 m2 per cow) OWPs were compared with cubicle housing (n = 49 cows per treatment). In Year 2, all three OWP designs (12 m2 per cow) were compared with cubicle housing (n = 24 cows per treatment, split into two replicates). Animals were dried off and assigned to treatment in the autumn, and remained there until calving in spring. Subsequently, they were managed at pasture during lactation. Outcome measures for analysis during the pre-partum period were feed intake, live weight, body condition score (BCS), heat production and heat loss, and post-partum were live weight, BCS, milk yield and milk composition. In Year 1, all cows had a similar live weight, but both pre-partum and at calving cows on the unsheltered OWP had a lower BCS than cows in cubicles (P < 0.05). However, in Year 2, there were no differences in either live weight or BCS. In Year 1, cows in the unsheltered OWP produced less heat than in cubicles (P < 0.05), but in Year 2, there was no treatment effect. In both years, cows in unsheltered OWPs lost more heat than cows in the sheltered OWP (P < 0.001). Treatment had no effect on milk composition either year. However, in Year 2, cows in the self-feed OWP had higher milk yields than the other treatments (P < 0.05). The lower BCS and heat production values in unsheltered treatments during Year 1 were probably because of higher rainfall and wind-speed values of that year. However, in both years, live weight in all treatments increased pre partum, and BCS did not decrease, indicating that unsheltered cows did not need to mobilise body reserves. Thus, OWPs could be a suitable pre-partum alternative to cubicle housing for dry dairy cows with regard to some aspects of dairy cow productive performance. However, further research should be carried out to investigate longer-term effects.

Milk production data from Holstein × Zebu cows in small farms (2.4 cows per farm on average) in Maharashtra, India, followed by Bharatiya Agro Industries Foundation (BAIF), an Indian non-governmental organisation, were analysed to evaluate the impact of simplified milk-recording systems. The aim was to investigate, in developing tropical areas, less-costly protocols compared with the one currently implemented at BAIF, used as a reference. The latter can be considered an ‘AT2’ protocol with the recording made by specialised technicians at 2-week intervals. The simplified protocols were simulated from an initial data file by sampling test days according to each protocol. Bias and accuracy on the 305-day cow milk production and on the resulting reliability of the estimated breeding value of bulls were the criteria used in the comparison with the reference protocol. One type of simplified protocol considered an increase in the interval between two tests to at least 4 and up to 8 weeks. Another alternative studied corresponded to the situation where milk yield information measured by the farmer is collected by the artificial insemination technicians themselves when visiting a farm. This could be an option in the case of very small herd sizes (two or three cows). The results suggest that simplifying the current milk-recording protocol leads to a clear decrease in accuracy of estimating 305-day cow production but it has a limited effect on the reliability of bull proofs. No economic comparison was carried out, but the results strongly suggest that properly managed simplified milk-recording schemes could permit a substantial decrease of costs of milk recording per cow without damaging the efficiency of progeny testing in tropical areas with small herd size. Moreover, with the proposed simplified milk-recording protocols, up to three to four times more bulls could be tested with the same number of records.

There is a need to develop feeding strategies to prevent the adverse effect of concentrate feeding in high-performance horses fed energy-dense diets aiming to maintain their health and welfare. The objective of this study is to determine the effect of a VistaEQ product containing 4% live yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae), with activity 5 × 108 colony-forming unit/g and fed 2 g/pony per day, on faecal microbial populations when supplemented with high-starch and high-fibre diets using Illumina next generation sequencing of the V3-V4 region of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene. The four treatments were allocated to eight mature Welsh section A pony geldings enrolled in a 4-period × 8 animal crossover design. Each 19-day experimental period consisted of an 18-day adaptation phase and a single collection day, followed by a 7-day wash out period. After DNA extraction from faeces and library preparation, α-diversity and linear discriminant analysis effect size were performed using 16S metagenomics pipeline in Quantitative Insights Into Microbial Ecology (QIIME™) and Galaxy/Hutlab. Differences between the groups were considered significant when linear discriminant analysis score was >2 corresponding to P < 0.05. The present study showed that S. cerevisiae used was able to induce positive changes in the equine microbiota when supplemented to a high-fibre diet: it increased relative abundance (RA) of Lachnospiraceae and Dehalobacteriaceae family members associated with a healthy core microbiome. Yeast supplementation also increased the RA of fibrolytic bacteria (Ruminococcus) when fed with a high-fibre diet and reduced the RA of lactate producing bacteria (Streptococcus) when a high-starch diet was fed. In addition, yeast increased the RA of acetic, succinic acid producing bacterial family (Succinivibrionaceae) and butyrate producing bacterial genus (Roseburia) when fed with high-starch and high-fibre diets, respectively. VistaEQ supplementation to equine diets can be potentially used to prevent acidosis and increase fibre digestibility. It may help to meet the energy requirements of performance horses while maintaining gut health.

Boar taint, an off-odor and an off-flavor in the meat from some uncastrated male pigs, is due to high levels of the testicular steroid hormone, androstenone, and the indole, skatole. Thus far, there are no known methods for controlling both androstenone and skatole through dietary means. We tested the adsorbent agents, cholestyramine (CH), activated carbon (AC), tween-60 (Tween), bentonite (BNT) and polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVPP) for binding androstenone, estrone (E1), estrone sulfate (E1S) and skatole from buffer solutions in an in vitro system. The goal was to determine the potential utility of these binding agents as feed additives to control boar taint. Michaelis–Menten analysis was utilized to determine the effectiveness of the adsorbents. At pH 7.4, E1S was bound to AC and CH with the highest Bmax (maximum binding), whereas Tween and AC had the greatest Bmax for E1. The Bmax for skatole at pH 7.4 was highest for AC, CH and PVPP. AC had a higher Bmax for androstenone than CH and Tween. The Bmax values at pH 3.0 with E1S for AC and CH were essentially 100%, whereas the binding of Tween to E1S at pH 3.0 decreased by 49.5% from binding at pH 7.4 (P < 0.05). The Adint values, which represent efficiency of binding, illustrated that AC bound E1, androstenone and skatole with greater efficiency than the other binding agents at pH 7.4, whereas AC bound E1S as efficiently as CH. We conclude that AC was the most effective adsorbent agent for binding E1, E1S, androstenone and skatole in vitro, followed by CH, Tween, PVPP and lastly BNT. These adsorbent agents may be useful for binding boar taint compounds in in vivo studies to decrease the risk of boar taint.

Nineteen prepubertal gilts were injected with a combination of 400 international units pregnant mare's serum gonadotrophin and 200 international units human chorionic gonadotrophin. Blood was sampled throughout the ensuing oestrous cycle and assayed for progesterone and oestradiol-17β.

Eighteen gilts had vulval development consistent with oestrus within 5 days and had ovulated by day 12. Oestradiol levels in the plasma were elevated between days 2 and 6, and progesterone concentration increased between days 6 and 10 due to the establishment of functional corpora lutea. Progesterone concentration in the luteal phase was related to ovulation rate (r = 0·72, P<0·001).

Three types of cyclic activity followed the luteal phase and a characteristic hormone profile was established for each. Five gilts exhibited a second ovulation accompanied by signs of oestrus. They had a second peak of oestradiol around days 24 to 26 and a subsequent rise in progesterone concentration. Four gilts displayed vulval development at this time but did not ovulate. A peak of oestradiol was detected. The remaining gilts did not display oestrus, nor did they ovulate. Oestradiol and progesterone concentrations remained basal in these gilts. The ovaries of prepubertal gilts treated with this combination of gonadotrophins produce normal patterns and levels of oestradiol and progesterone. Cyclic activity is not always maintained, probably due to differences in the maturity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis.

An attempt to evaluate a group of 72 beef carcasses, in retail terms, is described, resulting in a comparative measure of retail value that takes account of saleable fat and of the distribution of lean amongst the different cuts. Changes in the general level of beef prices can be discounted, provided the ratios of the prices of different joints remain the same. It was found that the index of retail value was poorly correlated with the commonly used ratio of high-priced to low-priced parts, but highly correlated with total proportion of lean. The index could best be predicted from a multiple regression on side weight and proportional area of muscle determined from photographs of the cut surface after quartering.

A cDNA library from white alpaca (Vicugna pacos) skin was constructed using SMART technology to investigate the global gene expression profile in alpaca skin and identify genes associated with physiology of alpaca skin and pigmentation. A total of 5359 high-quality EST (expressed sequence tag) sequences were generated by sequencing random cDNA clones from the library. Clustering analysis of sequences revealed a total of 3504 unique sequences including 739 contigs (assembled from 2594 ESTs) and 2765 singletons. BLAST analysis against GenBank nr database resulted in 1287 significant hits (E-value < 10−10), of which 863 were annotated through gene ontology analysis. Transcripts for genes related to fleece quality, growth and coat color (e.g. collagen types I and III, troponin C2 and secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine) were abundantly present in the library. Other genes, such as keratin family genes known to be involved in melanosome protein production, were also identified in the library. Members (KRT10, 14 and 15) of this gene family are evolutionarily conserved as revealed by a cross-species comparative analysis. This collection of ESTs provides a valuable resource for future research to understand the network of gene expression linked to physiology of alpaca skin and development of pigmentation.

A number of metabolism crates for the separate collection of faeces and urine from sheep have been described by various workers. These fall into two main categories, collection of excreta by bag and funnel of the pattern described by Raymond, Harris and Harker (1953), and separation without harness by the use of wire screens which deflect the faeces into a container and permit the urine to flow through a metal funnel into a collection bottle. Bratzler (1951) has described in detail a metabolism crate of this latter type which has the advantage that it can be used for sheep of either sex.

A model able to predict missing test day data for milk, fat and protein yields on the basis of few recorded tests was proposed, based on the partial least squares (PLS) regression technique, a multivariate method that is able to solve problems related to high collinearity among predictors. A data set of 1731 lactations of Sarda breed dairy Goats was split into two data sets, one for model estimation and the other for the evaluation of PLS prediction capability. Eight scenarios of simplified recording schemes for fat and protein yields were simulated. Correlations among predicted and observed test day yields were quite high (from 0·50 to 0·88 and from 0·53 to 0·96 for fat and protein yields, respectively, in the different scenarios). Results highlight great flexibility and accuracy of this multivariate technique.

Eighty pregnant ewes were housed in December in each of 2 yr approximately 14 weeks before lambing and offered grass silage. Four nutritional regimes were imposed during the final 7 weeks of pregnancy. They were (a) no concentrates given, and three other treatments each aiming to provide 25 kg concentrates on (b) a weekly ascending scale, (c) a level scale, or (d) a weekly descending scale. Concentrate feeding caused the anticipated improvement in performance particularly with respect to ewe live-weight loss and the live weight of multiple litters, but pattern of concentrate feeding appeared to have no significant effect on any performance parameter. It is concluded that a level pattern of concentrate feeding would be simpler and provide a more even distribution of feed among housed pregnant ewes, which vary in expected date of lambing, than the currently recommended ascending pattern of concentrate feeding.

Several studies have shown that feeding of an energy-dense diet over short periods to cull cows could be profitable in terms of increased saleable yield and improved carcass conditions. Although the application of growth promoters, such as anabolic implants and beta agonists, in finishing of cull cows have been recorded, there is no conclusive evidence as to the timing and duration of beta agonists in cull cow production. In this study, 288 cull cows with four or more permanent incisors and varying weights and body conditions were divided into four treatment groups so that variation in age, weight and body condition were equally distributed among groups. One group received concentrate feed without any beta agonist (C), whereas the other three groups also received concentrate feed with zilpaterol hydrochloride (6 p.p.m.) for 20 (Z20), 30 (Z30) or 40 (Z40) days, respectively, followed by a 2-day withdrawal. Animals were adapted for 10 days on a grain-based diet and fed an additional 40 days before slaughter. Growth rate and efficiency (live and carcass), trimmed meat yield and meat tenderness (Warner Bratzler shear force and sensory) of the aged (10 days) m. longissimus thoracis (LT) and m. semitendinosus (ST) were recorded. In general, Z cows had higher carcass gains and efficiency of gain than C cows (P < 0.05). In addition, Z carcasses showed higher proportional trimmed meat yields than C carcasses (P < 0.05). No significant differences in tenderness measurements were recorded for LT or ST. In general, supplementation of zilpaterol for 30 days showed better growth performance and higher trimmed meat yield than 20 and 40 days supplementation.

Results are given of an experiment in which 61 cyclic Finnish Landrace × Dorset Horn ewes were synchronized for oestrus by intravaginal treatment for 14 days using sponges impregnated with 30 mg ‘Cronolone’ (9a-fluro-11-hydroxy-17a-acetoxy-progesterone; SC-9880, G. D. Searle) and 400 mg progesterone. Groups of 31 and 30 sheep were inseminated twice, either artificially or naturally, at predetermined intervals of 48 and 58 hr after sponge withdrawal. All 61 ewes were in oestrus within 48 hr of removing sponges; 26 of 30 (87%) artificially inseminated and 29 of 31 (94%) hand-mated sheep conceived at the controlled oestrus. The incidence of multiple births was not significantly affected by the method of breeding.

Sixty-six multiparous hybrid Camborough female pigs and their litters were housed in groups of five or six at day 20 post partum. A boar was added to each group on day 21. Four groups (a total of 22 sows) were fed to appetite (TA), to requirement (R) or to 0·70 of requirement (RO·70). Average daily sow food intakes were 8·2, 61 and 4·5 kg for TA, R and RO·70 respectively. Significant differences occurred in live-weight changes between grouping and weaning (TA>R>RO·70; P<0·001). TA sows were heavier at weaning than either R or RO·70 sows (P< 0·001).

Oestrus occurred during lactation in 0·68, 0·73 and 0·18 of sows, on average 11·3, 13·4 and 8·0 days following grouping respectively, for TA, R and RO·70 sows but these differences were statistically non-significant. The average non-return rate at day 21 was 0·69, with no differences between treatments.

Milking cows once a day (OAD) is a herd management practice that may help to reduce working effort and labour demand in dairy farms. However, a decrease in milk yield per cow occurs in OAD systems compared with twice a day (TAD) systems and this may affect profitability of dairy systems. The objective of this study was to assess productive and economic impact and risk of reducing milking frequency from TAD to OAD for grazing dairy systems, using a whole-farm model. Five scenarios were evaluated by deterministic and stochastic simulations: one scenario under TAD milking (TADAR) and four scenarios under OAD milking. The OAD scenarios assumed that milk yield per cow decreased by 30% (OAD30), 24% (OAD24), 19% (OAD19) and 10% (OAD10), compared with TADAR scenario, based on experimental and commercial farms data. Stocking rate (SR) was increased in all OAD scenarios compared to TADAR and two levels of reduction in labour cost were tested, namely 15% and 30%. Milk and concentrate feeds prices, and pasture and crop yields, were allowed to behave stochastically to account for market and climate variations, respectively, to perform risk analyses. Scenario OAD10 showed similar milk yield per ha compared with TADAR, as the increased SR compensated for the reduction in milk yield per cow. For scenarios OAD30, OAD24 and OAD19 the greater number of cows per ha partially compensated for the reduction of milk yield per cow and milk yield per ha decreased 21%, 15% and 10%, respectively, compared with TADAR. Farm operating profit per ha per year also decreased in all OAD scenarios compared with TADAR, and were US$684, US$161, US$ 303, US$424 and US$598 for TADAR, OAD30, OAD24, OAD19, OAD10, respectively, when labour cost was reduced 15% in OAD scenarios. When labour cost was reduced 30% in OAD scenarios, only OAD10 showed higher profit (US$706) than TADAR. Stochastic simulations showed that exposure to risk would be higher in OAD scenarios compared with TADAR. Results showed that OAD milking systems might be an attractive alternative for farmers who can either afford a reduction in profit to gain better and more flexible working conditions or can minimise milk yield loss and greatly reduce labour cost.

The objective of this study was to assess the effects of milk replacer and rumen inert fat on growth, testicular development, puberty, semen production and sperm motion characteristics of ram lambs reared under intensive management in semi-arid climatic conditions. Seven-day-old male lambs of Malpura breed (n=20) were divided equally into two groups. Up to weaning, the lambs in G1 group (control) were fed concentrate, green khejri (Prosopis cineraria) leaves and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) hay along with suckling of dams, whereas lambs in G2 group were fed reconstituted milk at 17 g/lamb per day for the 1st week and at 34 g/lamb per day from 2nd week in addition to the feed inputs given in G1. During post weaning, lambs in the G1 group were given control concentrate, whereas in G2 the control concentrate supplemented with 40 g rumen inert fat per kg of feed was offered along with dry pala (Zizyphus nummularia) and ardu (Ailanthus excelsa) leaves. BWs of lambs were recorded weekly up to 6 months of age. Ram lambs of both the groups were trained for semen collection at a weekly interval from the age of 5 months and simultaneously testicular measurements were recorded fortnightly. The feeding of milk replacer and rumen inert fat had positive (P<0.05) effects on BW, testicular length, testicular volume, semen volume, sperm concentration, mass motility, % motility, % rapid, medium or slow motile spermatozoa. However, no significant effect was observed on testicular breadth, scrotal circumference, age of puberty, sperm velocities and other CASA-derived parameters. The results of this study indicate that higher plane of nutrition in the form of milk-replacer feeding during preweaning and rumen inert fat-supplemented feed during the postweaning period to growing ram lambs enhances their growth, testicular development and semen quality.

A well-balanced amino acid profile in the feedstuffs for livestock is essential to support adequate growth. This is well studied for monogastric species but still not well understood for ruminants and especially for the most unconventional species, like cervids. This study investigated the influence of ruminally protected lysine (Lys) and methionine (Met) supplementation during the fattening period, as well as two slaughter seasons (late autumn (LA) v. late winter (LW)), on the growth, carcass traits, body condition and blood plasma metabolites of fallow deer (Dama dama). Forty-five yearlings of fallow deer bucks were allocated into three groups, balanced by weight (40.2 ± 2.7 kg). The deer were pasture-fed and supplemented with barley, free-choice mineral premix, silage during the winter period, and varying levels of ruminally protected Lys and Met: no amino acids (Control), 9 g/day of Lys, and 9 g/day of Lys plus 3 g/day of Met (Lys+Met). Animals were slaughtered in two separate seasons, LA (six animals per group), and LW (nine animals per group). Animals culled in LA had higher average daily weight gain than LW (P = 0.002), due to the reduced growth during winter typical for seasonal cervids in temperate zone, mediated by the photoperiod. Dressing percentage was significantly higher in LW and in the Lys+Met group (P = 0.002). Body condition score (P = 0.024), kidney fat index (KFI) (P = 0.005), and internal fat (P < 0.001) increased significantly with Lys+Met supplementation. During LW, KFI (P = 0.004) and kidney fat (P = 0.001) were also significantly higher than in LA. Blood creatinine concentration increased significantly for deer receiving Lys (P = 0.002) and Lys+Met (P < 0.001). Also, triglycerides level increased in Lys group (P < 0.001). These findings highlight the effects of Lys and Met supplementation on the growth and internal fat storage for winter survival, suggesting a different use of the supplemented resource according to the season. Also, the observed effects on protein and fat metabolism of fallow deer may influence the production of farmed animals, and offer interesting insights about the physiology of the species.

Twenty-eight lactating ewes (mean 48 (s.e. 0·37) kg live weight) were used from days 12 to 52 after lambing to evaluate the effects on digestibility and production performance of replacing barley grain with citrus pulp in diets based on ammonia-treated barley straw. Concentrates included 0·82 to 0·83 of different barley to citrus pulp proportions: 100: 0 (T1); 66: 33 (T2); 33: 66 (T3) and 0: 100 (T4), 0·115 of soya-bean meal, and urea to make diets isonitrogenous. Ewes were adapted to a common diet for 11 days after lambing, and then were given 850 g/day of each experimental concentrate together with 850 g/day of chopped barley straw for 14 days and milk production and lamb growth were recorded. During the following 14 days ewes received the same amount of concentrate but the straw was offered ad libitum and straw intake was recorded as well as milk production and lamb growth. After completing both periods, four ewes per treatment were used for total collections of faeces and urine. Apparent digestibility of organic matter and neutral-detergent fibre increased linearly (P < 0·05) with increasing levels of citrus pulp although no differences were found in the digestible organic matter content of dry matter of diets because of differences in ash content. Urinary excretion of allantoin and purine derivatives per unit of digestible organic matter intake tended to decrease with increasing inclusion of citrus pulp (proportionately by 0·15), suggesting a decrease in microbial protein synthesis, though this effect was not significant (P > 0·05). Faecal excretion of purine bases also decreased (P < 0·05) as citrus pulp inclusion increased. No treatment effect (P > 0·05) on ewe live weight, milk composition or serum glucose and 3–OH butyrate was observed when a 1: 1 straw to concentrate ratio was given, but milk production and lamb daily gain decreased linearly (P < 0·05) with increased proportions of citrus pulp in the concentrate. Similar responses were detected when straw was given ad libitum and differences among treatments in terms of straw intake were not identified. It is concluded that a lower microbial protein flow might explain in part the reduction in milk production observed when barley was replaced with citrus pulp.

Regression equations have been tested relating average daily gains in pigs to average daily intake of crude protein, lysine, and TDN for each of three growth stages. The tests were based on output contour curves representing 1 lb, 1·4 lb and 1·75 lb live-weight gain per day in the three stages. On each contour, while crude protein intake was held constant, points were selected to represent the economically optimum combination of lysine and TDN intakes, a ‘high energy-low lysine’ combination and a ‘low energy-high lysine’ combination. For the latter two points, least cost mixes of feed ingredients were computed. Four feed mixes were computed at the economically optimum combination of lysine and TDN intakes. Comparisons were made between the performance of pigs given the six different mixes to assess the validity both of the slope of the output contour and its position and to examine the influence on growth performance of the ingredient specification of diets formulated to the same nutrient levels.

Using the six diets formulated on each contour, 12 feeding systems were developed all of which theoretically would take the pig from 50 to 200 lb in the same number of days. Six of these systems maintained the same diet type for each period; the others involved a change of diet type at least once during the three stages of growth. Diets formulated to meet the economically optimum combination of nutrients based largely on maize and groundnut meal stimulated inferior daily gains compared with alternative formulations. Both diets with a larger percentage of their lysine supplied from synthetic sources (the economically optimum combination based on maize and groundnut meal, and a low energy-high lysine combination) led to inferior daily gains. Pig performance was generally poorer than expectation, particularly from 50 to 150 lb live weight.

No differences could be attributed to differing ingredient composition in equi-nutrient diets. Similarly, no significant differences in growth rate were found between those systems which maintained a constant diet type throughout the three stages of growth. Pigs on systems which involved a change in diet type from one stage of growth to another grew in general slower than those pigs which had a fixed-diet type throughout.

Pigs on both diet combinations with a high percentage of weatings (a high cost formulation and a low energy-high lysine combination) had the best carcass results.

Utilization of low-input feed resources rich in plant bioactive compounds is a promising strategy for modulating the fatty acid profile in ruminant products. They manipulate microbes involved in rumen biohydrogenation and increase the accumulation of desirable fatty acids at the tissue level. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to assess the effect of dietary supplementation of aniseed straw and eucalyptus leaves on growth performance, carcass traits and fatty acid profile of finisher lambs. Thirty-six Malpura hogget were divided into three treatment groups of 12 each, reared individually in pen (1.6 m × 1.1 m) and fed ad libitum complete feed blocks made up of 55 parts concentrate, 5 parts molasses and 40 parts roughage. Roughage in control (Con) was 20 parts each of ardu (Ailanthus excelsa) leaves and oat (Avena sativa) straw. In test diets, that is, Con-as and Con-el, 10% aniseed (Pimpinella anisum) straw and Eucalyptus rudis leaves, respectively, were added by replacing 5% each of oat straw and eucalyptus leaves. The lambs were weighed weekly; and at the end of 3 months of feeding trial, the lambs were slaughtered to study the carcass traits, composition and product evaluation. Average daily gain (ADG) and DM intake (DMI) was higher (P < 0.05) in Con-as compared to Con and Con-el, while ADG and feed conversion ratio decreased (P < 0.05) by 29.4% and 36.4%, respectively, in Con-el compared to Con. Carcass traits showed lower (P < 0.05) loin eye area and chilling loss in the Con-el group compared to the Con-as and Con, and the total carcass fat compared to Con-as. However, the keeping quality of meat improved in both Con-as and Con-el which was reflected by lower (P < 0.05) thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances values. Nuggets prepared from Con and Con-as meat had superior (P < 0.05) sensory attributes with an overall palatability. Fatty acid profile of longissimus thoracis muscle showed lower (P < 0.05) atherogenic and thrombogenic indices in Con-as and higher (P < 0.05) in Con-el group. Moreover, in Con-as group, the proportion of C16:0 was lower (P < 0.05) and C18:3n-3 was higher (P < 0.05), but no effect was observed on the amount of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA; C18:2 c9t11). In case of adipose tissue, the content of CLA was higher (P < 0.05), and the ratio of n-6:n-3 was more nearer to desirable levels in Con-as group. Therefore, it can be concluded that aniseed straw is a promising feed supplement compared to eucalyptus leaves for improving meat quality and fatty acid profile in lambs.

Five mathematical models were compared to select the most satisfactory model to describe digesta kinetics of solids and fluids in the gastrointestinal tract of buffaloes (Mediterranean bulls), cattle (Friesian bulls) and sheep (Delle Langhe rams) given food at maintenance level, according to a Latin-square arrangement for four consecutive periods of 21 days. Chromium mordanted alfalfa hay and cobalt-ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid were used as nonabsorbable markers and were administered through the rumen cannula in a single dose. Four different isonitrogenous diets (N × 6·25 = 140 g/kg dry matter) with different concentrate:forage ratios (12·5:87·5, 25:75, 37·5:62·5, 50:50) were used.

Faecal chromium and cobalt concentration curves were fitted with five non-linear models: three gamma (G2, G3, G4) age-dependent one-compartment, one gamma age-dependent/age-independent two-compartment (G2G1) and one multicompartment (MC).

Wilcoxon tests on residual sums of squares of the different models for solids showed that MC and G4 gave a better fit than G2G1, G2, G3 for all the data and within the species. The comparison of MC v. G4 did not show any significant difference (P > 0·05) for all the data computed together or within each species. Nevertheless, MC had a higher number of curves with lower residual sums of squares in comparison with G4 and was also able to produce estimates of digesta kinetics in the second compartment.

The cobalt excretion curves for fluids, considering all the data, and only within sheep, showed G4 as the best fitting model. When G4 was compared with other models no significant differences were recorded either for cattle: G4 v. G2 (F = 0·6645), G4 v. G2G1 (P = 0·0620) and for buffalo: G4 v. G2 (P = 0·1575), G4 v.G3(P = 0·0796) and G4 v. G2G1 (P = 0·1641).

It is concluded that the multicompartment model (MC) and G4 model were the best fits for solids and for fluids respectively.
