The growth hormone-insulin-like growth factor (GH-IGF) axis is involved in the control of postnatal growth in all animals studied to date. At birth, blood levels of IGF-1 are low, although levels of GH are high. Thus a switching occurs during the postnatal period, which involves an increase in liver GH-receptors (GHR). This study investigates the changes in serum IGF-1 and IGF-1 and GHR mRNA in liver and skeletal muscle of growing pigs. The period from birth to 20 days of age showed a gradual increase in both IGF-1 and GHR mRNA expression by the liver, thus accounting for the gradual increase in serum IGF-1. The IGF-1 mRNA expressed was found to be predominantly class 1 transcripts with very few class 2 transcripts. There was a plateau of liver IGF-1 mRNA levels after 20 days and up to 140 days, even though the expression of GHR mRNA continued to increase. The levels of expression of the two genes were found to correlate in the first 20-day period (r = 0·76, P < 0·005), but not in the later period (r = 0·44, P > 0·05).

Levels of expression of both genes in the LD muscle were highly variable, with no age related changes being observed. However, a significant negative correlation of expression of the two genes was observed (R = 0·60, P < 0·001), with the correlation still being significant in the two age periods.

The data are consistent with a likely initial dependence for postnatal growth upon GH-stimulated IGF-1 mRNA expression by the liver, up to 20 days of age. After this time, hepatic expression of IGF-1 mRNA reaches a plateau, even though the serum IGF-1 and hepatic GHR mRNA levels continue to rise. A possible explanation for this could be an increase in either turn-over or stability of IGF-1 mRNA, giving rise to increased levels of peptide with no apparent change in mRNA level. Another possibility is that an increased expression/production of the IGF-binding proteins leads to an increase in the half-life of the peptide in the circulation.

Experiments were carried out to measure the effects of wearing jute coats on the heat production and external insulation of Blackface and Cheviot sheep during exposure to different types of cold environment. The results showed that wearing coats did not appreciably increase external insulation in cold conditions at wind speeds up to 10 mph when the fleece was dry. In cold, wet and windy conditions, wearing coats prevented moisture from penetrating the fleece of the sheep so that external insulation was 25–27 units when the sheep were wearing coats, but only 15–18 units when they were not.

It has been shown that few environments likely to occur in Britain constitute a cold stress for grazing sheep if their external insulation is above 25 units. Wind and rain reduced the external insulation of sheep with full winter fleeces below this value only when they were not wearing coats. It is concluded, therefore, that jute coats have a considerable value in ameliorating the effects of cold stresses of the type likely to be encountered by hill sheep wintered out of doors in the British Isles.

Although a few studies consider the sustainability of animal farming systems along the three classical main pillars (economy, environment and society), most studies on pig farming systems address only one of these pillars. The present paper is the introduction to a series of companion papers presenting the results of a study undertaken within the EU-supported project Q-PorkChains, aiming at building a comprehensive tool for the evaluation of pig farming systems, which is robust to accommodate the large variability of systems existing in Europe. The tool is mostly based on questions to farmers and comprises a total of 37 dimensions distributed along eight themes: Animal Welfare, Animal Health, Breeding Programmes, Environmental Sustainability, Meat Safety, Market Conformity, Economy and Working Conditions. The paper describes the procedure that was used for building the tool, using it on 15 contrasted pig farming systems and analysing the results. The evaluated systems are briefly described and a short overview of the dimensions is provided. Detailed descriptions of the theme-wise tools and results, as well as the results of an integrated evaluation, are available in the companion papers.

One hundred and ninety-two individually fed pigs, half of them castrated males and half females, were used to examine the effects of reducing the concentration of dietary lysine below the value of 0·84 g/MJ digestible energy suggested by the Agricultural Research Council (1981). Lysine was varied by altering the inclusion of either free lysine hydrochloride or soya-bean meal. Over the whole experiment from 18 to 65 kg live weight, there were significant reductions in live-weight gain and increases in food: gain ratio in response to reducing lysine concentration; these changes were greater with soya-bean meal than with free lysine. During later growth (45 to 65 kg) alterations in lysine concentration had no significant effect.

For pigs given soya-bean supplements, both the live weights after fasting and the carcass weights were significantly lower than for those given free lysine hydrochloride, suggesting that at least part of the difference in growth between pigs given free lysine hydrochloride and soya-bean was attributable to this difference. The food required per kg carcass weight gain, or per kg lean tissue gain, was not affected by the source of lysine.

In a subsidiary experiment using nitrogen balance, supplements of five amino acids in addition to lysine did not increase nitrogen retention, providing further evidence that lysine was the only amino acid responsible for the response seen with soya-bean meal. It was concluded that for growing pigs with daily food intakes of 1·5 to 1·8 kg, a lysine concentration of at least 0·81 g/MJ digestible energy is required to maximize performance.

Data collected in the Meat and Livestock Commission's pedigree recording scheme have been analysed by least square procedures to assess the relationship between, and heritability of, birth, 200-day and 400-day weights. In total 5524 birth weights, 16 484 200-day weights and 6248 400-day weights were available for 765 herds, in which were represented 2031 sires of seven breeds. Heritability estimates were calculated using the complete data and a set restricted to the larger herds and sire progeny groups. The influence of single effects on the heritability estimates was computed. Linear relationships were established between birth and 200-day weights in the Aberdeen-Angus and Charolais breeds but in the Hereford, Devon and Sussex breeds they were curvilinear. The data from the Hereford breed indicated an optimum range of birth weights. The partial regressions of 400-day on 200-day weights were positive; they were not linear for the Charolais, Devon and Sussex breeds. In these cases there was a more than proportionate increase in 400-day weights for an increase in 200-day weights. The heritability estimates varied widely and were dependent on the method and underlying model used. The most reliable estimates were as follows: birth weight 0·23, 200-day weight 0·38 and 400-day weight 0·27.

There are important differences in terms of metabolic activity, energy utilization and capacity of protein and fat deposition when Iberian and modern pigs are compared. Primary culture of hepatocytes was used to evaluate hepatic function and sensitivity to hormones between breeds without the interference of circulating blood factors. Hepatocytes were isolated from pure Iberian (n=10) and Landrace (n=8) pigs of similar BW (24.5±12.1 and 32.9±6.1 kg BW, respectively), by collagenase perfusion. Monolayers were established in medium containing fetal bovine serum for 1 day and switched to serum-free medium for the remainder of the culture period. Hepatocytes were maintained in William’s E supplemented with β-mercaptoethanol (0.1 mM), glutamine (2 mM), antibiotics (gentamicin, penicillin, streptomycin and amphotericin B), dimethyl sulfoxide (1 µg/ml), dexamethasone (10−8 M), insulin (0.173 and 17.3 nM) and glucagon (0.287, 2.87 and 28.7 nM) for 24 to 48 h. Gluconeogenesis (GNG), glycogen degradation, triglycerides (TG) content and esterification, β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) synthesis, IGF-1 synthesis, albumin and urea synthesis were determined. Iberian pigs had greater capacity of GNG than Landrace (24%, P<0.05), although no difference in glycogen degradation was found (P>0.10). TG content and esterification tended to be lower in hepatocytes from Iberian compared with Landrace pigs (12% and 31%, respectively; 0.10<P<0.05). Furthermore, addition of free fatty acids (CLA or linoleic acid, 0.2 mM) increased TG content (64%, P<0.001) although no difference between fatty acids was found. When free fatty acids were compared, a trend toward increased esterification (41%, P=0.078) was found for CLA. Although glucagon stimulated and insulin inhibited BHB synthesis, no difference between breeds was found (P>0.10). IGF-1 synthesis was diminished in hepatocytes from Iberian compared with Landrace pigs (16%, P<0.05). On the contrary, rate of albumin synthesis was greater in Iberian compared with Landrace pigs (58%, P<0.05). Finally, the capacity of urea synthesis was lower in hepatocytes of Iberian compared with Landrace pigs (37%, P<0.05). When ammonia was added to the media, urea concentration increased (648%, 1108% and 2791% when 0 mM was compared with 2.5, 5 and 10 mM, respectively). Urea synthesis increased on increasing ammonia content (55% and 325% when 0 mM was compared with 5 and 10 mM, respectively; P<0.0001). In conclusion, the genetic background accounts for important differences in protein and energy metabolism pathways found in primary culture of hepatocytes from lean and obese pigs.

Two experiments were performed to monitor the stress responses of sheep to intra-uterine insemination by laparoscopy and its associated handling procedures. The results of experiment 1 indicated that both restraint alone and full laparoscopic intra-uterine insemination in animals which had been sedated with 0·2 mg/kg diazepam promoted similar, significant (P < 0·001) short-lived increase in heart rate and plasma cortisol concentrations, but there was no effect of treatment on plasma β-endorphin concentrations. Experiment 2 compared restraint and full laparoscopy, with and without sedation in a 2 × 2 factorial design. The heart rate and cortisol responses following restraint and full laparoscopy were not significantly different, although laparoscopy tended (P = 0·06) to increase the duration of the heart rate response. Sedation with diazepam significantly (P<0·05) increased the duration of the heart rate response but attenuated (P < 0·05) the amplitude of the cortisol response. These results indicate that laparoscopic intra-uterine insemination does cause sheep to mount a typical stress response, but that most of this is attributable to the restraint required to effect insemination. However, the magnitude of the stress responses recorded were much lower than those reported to follow many other husbandry procedures.

Friesian steer cahes were reared over winter on a silage (S) or on a silage plus concentrate (SC) diet to provide cattle of the same live weight, but of different ages for a comparison of grazing and feeding cut herbage indoors during the summer. A further group received fish meal (SF) as a supplement in an attempt to provide cattle of the same age as the S group, but of different body composition. Although supplementation improved the daily deposition of fat and protein, it did not lead to differences in body composition at the end of the winter period. The ratio of protein to fat deposition and the efficiencies of conversion were low for all groups, but they did improve as the level of supplementation increased.

There was no carry-over effect of winter treatment on summer performance. However, housed cattle deposited significantly more fat.

The trial demonstrated the inefficient use of nitrogen from silage with poor fermentation characteristics and the predisposition of cattle on such diets to low protein to energy retention. Whilst supplementation altered this balance, higher levels than given would be needed to have a marked effect. It was also concluded that the performance of housed cattle as an indicator of that of grazing cattle, is likely to be misleading because lower activity reduces maintenance requirement and leads to greater fat deposition.

A 2 × 2 factorial experimental design was used to compare growth in entire and castrated fallow bucks, implanted with zeranol at 6 and 9 months of age, or left as controls (no. = 10 per group). Growth pattern at pasture was assessed using 10-monthly growth periods from weaning (6 months) to 17 months. There were no overall castration or zeranol effects on growth rates from weaning to 17 months (P > 0·05), although there were significant interactions of zeranol and castration with time (P < 0·05). Zeranol-treated animals grew faster than the controls from 6 to 14 months, compared with the last 3 months (P < 0·05), indicating that the zeranol implants given at 6 and 9 months of age were no longer effective over the last 3 months of the experiment. The interaction between castration and time was significant (P < 0·05), whereby entire males grew relatively faster than the castrated males in both spring and the average of the winter and spring periods, whilst there was little difference in growth rates between entire and castrated males during the autumn period.

At 17 months of age all animals were slaughtered following a 16-hfast. Entire bucks were 46g/kg live weight and 56 g/kg carcass weight heavier than the castrated bucks at slaughter (P < 0·05), although there was no effect of zeranol treatment on either live or carcass weights (P > 0·05). The mean dressing proportion for deer in all groups was 0·61.

A subset of each treatment (no. = 5) were slaughtered and half carcasses dissected into muscle, bone and fat. When compared at the same carcass weight, both castration and treatment with zeranol significantly reduced the muscle weight and increased carcass fat weight (P < 0·05). There was no effect of either castration or zeranol treatment on the distribution of primal cuts. There were significant castration × zeranol interactions (P < 0·05) for muscle: bone and muscle: fat ratios, the entire control group having the highest muscle: bone and muscle: fat ratios.

It was concluded that there is little commercial basis for the use of the growth promotant zeranol in fallow bucks being grown for venison. Although castration resulted in lower carcass weights and muscle proportion, these disadvantages should be considered against the management advantages of easier handling and lower bruising of castrates.

Recent work, mainly American, has indicated the possibility of using implanted synthetic oestrogens to induce faster and more economical weight gains in fattening lambs. Little has yet been done in this country to repeat or to extend these observations, and a possible reason for this may lie in the difference between the organisation of the fat lamb industries of the United Kingdom and the United States. Here, as in New Zealand and in other countries rearing sheep principally on pastures, many lambs are sold fat at light weights, while those not so well finished at weaning may either be fattened on grass or other green crops, or be overwintered and fattened as hoggets on grass in the following spring. In the U.K. fat lambs are thus seldom fed dry feeds as they are under U.S. ‘feed-lot’ conditions, and are slaughtered at rather lighter weights than their U.S. counterparts.

Alpine forages are assumed to have specific effects on ruminal digestion when fed to cattle. These effects were investigated in an experiment from two perspectives, either by using such forages as a substrate for incubation or as feed for a rumen fluid donor cow. In total, six 24-h in vitro batch culture runs were performed. Rumen fluid was collected from a non-lactating donor cow after having grazed pastures at ∼2000 m above sea level for 2, 6 and 10 weeks. These ‘alpine runs’ were compared with three lowland samplings from before and 2 and 6 weeks after the alpine grazing where a silage–concentrate mix was fed. In each run, nine replicates of four forages each were incubated. These forages differed in type and origin (alpine hay, lowland ryegrass hay, grass–maize silage mix, pure hemicellulose) as well as in the content of nutrients. Concentrations of phenolic compounds in the incubated forages were (g/kg dry matter (DM)): 20 (tannin proportion: 0.47), 8 (0.27), 15 (0.52) and 0 (0), respectively. Crude protein was highest in the silage mix and lowest with hemicellulose, whereas the opposite was the case for fiber. The total phenol contents (g/kg DM) for the high altitude and the lowland diet of the donor cow were 27 (tannins: 0.50 of phenols) and 12 (0.27), respectively. Independent of the origin of the rumen fluid, the incubation with alpine hay decreased (P < 0.05) bacterial counts, fermentation gas amount, volatile fatty acid (VFA) production as well as ammonia and methane concentrations in fermentation gas (the latter two being not lower when compared with hemicellulose). Alpine grazing of the cow in turn increased (P < 0.001) bacterial counts and, to a lesser extent, acetate proportion compared with lowland feeding. Further, alpine grazing decreased protozoal count (P < 0.05) and VFA production (P < 0.001) to a small extent, whereas methane remained widely unchanged. There were interactions (P < 0.05) between forage type incubated and feeding period of the donor cow in protozoal counts, acetate:propionate ratio, fermentation gas production and its content of methane, in vitro organic matter digestibility and metabolizable energy. Although increased phenolic compounds were the most consistent common property of the applied alpine forages, a clear attribution to certain effects was not possible in this study. As a further result, adaptation (long-term for donor cow, short term for 24 h incubations) appears to influence the expression of alpine forage effects in ruminal fermentation.

During the period 1974-77 six blocks of a perennial ryegrass/white clover sward were each divided into two for rotational paddock-grazing and silage cutting in alternate years. For each use an annual total of 360 kg nitrogen per ha was applied. Six livestock treatments of cattle only or cattle and sheep were grazed on the blocks. The stocking rates per ha and combinations of cattle (yearling steers) and sheep (ewes nursing twin lambs) respectively were low, 7·5 + 0; medium, 10 + 0, 7·5 + 5, and 5+10; and high, 7·5 + 10 and 5 + 15.

The annual quantities of herbage organic matter accumulated (6·6 to 7·2 t/ha) and consumed (5·6 to 6·7 t/ha) did not differ markedly according to grazing treatment during an individual year, nor was there an effect on organic matter accumulation in subsequent conservation years (11·3 to 12·0 t/ha). Between-year effects were significant. As judged by persistence of sown species there was no evidence of sward deterioration over the 4 years.

Total live-weight gain per ha increased with increasing stocking rate but with a decreasing increment. The ranges were 106 to 1·42 t/ha within treatments, 102 to 1/45 t/ha within years and 0·97 to 1·8t/ha within treatments × years. Individual gains of cattle (0·67 to 0·88 kg/day) and lambs (0·20 to 0·27 kg/day), and the proportion of lambs ready for slaughter (0·53 to 0·97), were lowest at the highest stocking rate. Mixed grazing compared with cattle-only led to improved cattle gains and improved total gains per ha. The benefits of mixed grazing for a species tended to increase as the proportion of that species in the mix decreased.

During a 2-year study from January 1997 to December 1999, the visual characteristics of the cervical mucous discharge of cows and heifers in oestrus and their relations to conception rate were studied in a large dairy herd of Holstein-Friesian cows. Cows were divided into two groups based on mucous discharge being of normal or abnormal appearance and the group with abnormal discharge was further divided into the following classes: cervical mucus with urine (CMU), cervical mucus with microbes (CMM), cervical mucus with blood (CMB) and a group with no cervical mucus (NCM). From 6169 cases of cows in oestrus, 82·2% had normal discharge, and the remaining 17·8% had abnormal discharge classifications (6·1% CMU, 5·1% CMM, 0·5% CMB and 6·1% NCM). Conception rate after artificial insemination (AI) in the normal group (38·3%) was significantly higher than that of the abnormal group (27·9%), (P < 0·05). When the conception rate of the normal group was compared with each one of the abnormal classifications, it was significantly different from that of CMU (26·5%), CMM (22·6%) and CMB (21·8%), (P < 0·05), but not from that of NCM (34·4%), (P > 0·05). From 1734 cases of heifers in oestrus, only 6% had abnormal discharges, and the conception rates of the normal and abnormal groups were not significantly different (P > 0·05).

We conclude that AI of cows in oestrus discharging cervical mucus that is contaminated with urine, microbes or blood produces conception rates significantly lower than those of cows discharging a normal and clear mucus. Absence of a cervical mucous discharge at the time of AI of cows does not imply a low conception rate. In the case of heifers, appearance of cervical mucus had no effect on the conception rate after AI.

Pododermatitis in rabbit production is an important welfare problem and there is less information on this type of lesion in rabbits than in many other species. The aim of this work was to develop a scoring system to assess the presence and severity of pododermatitis through observation of 1367 photos of rabbit feet by two observers. Different groups of lesions were established according to color, size, presence of chaps, presence of ulcers, shape, appearance and presence of blood in each observed foot. A two-step cluster methodology was used to gather the results in homogenous and objective units. The inter-rater agreement was moderate, and after the cluster analysis four main clusters were obtained. These clusters were later comprehensively described in terms of pododermatitis severity. Finally, attending to cluster description, a five-level score was defined and this scale resulted in a practical and objective way to assess pododermatitis in rabbit does. Cluster analysis provided a detailed characterization of this type of lesions and helped to obtain uniform scores.

Hill ewes undergo large changes in body fat and muscle weight throughout the annual production cycle as they contend with the pressures of reproduction and lactation, as well as harsh environmental conditions. This study modelled seasonal changes in fat and muscle weights in Scottish Blackface hill ewes throughout their productive lifetime using random regression statistical techniques.

Scottish Blackface ewes (no. = 308) were scanned using computed tomography (CT) four times per year, from 2 until 5 years old. Heritabilities of tissue weights were estimated at 2-weekly intervals throughout the productive life of the ewe. Genetic correlations between tissue weights at the same point in the production cycle at different ages, and between tissue weights at different events within each annual production cycle were predicted. Animal solutions from random regression analyses were used to estimate tissue weights, from pre-mating at 2 years old to weaning at 5 years old. The effects of litter size in the current and previous production years on fat and muscle weights were investigated.

Correlations between CT tissue weights and those predicted by a sin/cos random regression model were 0.87, 0.84, 0.88 for carcass fat, internal fat and muscle respectively. Heritabilities ranged from 0.31 to 0.90 for carcass fat weight, 0.21 to 0.68 for internal fat weight and 0.26 to 0.57 for muscle weight, throughout the productive lifetime of the ewe. Heritabilities were highest during mating for fat weights, and during the dry period and lambing time for muscle weights. Heritabilities of tissue weights in 3-year-old ewes were higher than in other age groups. Genetic correlations were 1.00 between tissue weights at the same scanning event at different ages, but ranged from close to zero to 0.97 between scanning events within age groups. Clearly environmental variation across time was large. The number of lambs produced in both the current and the previous year influenced tissue levels. Ewes that did not produce lambs (barren) in a given year carried more muscle during that year than ewes producing lambs. As ewes aged, barren ewes carried increasingly more carcass fat and muscle than ewes with lambs. Barren ewes also had significantly more muscle during the following year than ewes that had weaned lambs. Ewes that reared twins had significantly less carcass fat the following year than singleton-bearing or barren ewes. These effects of previous litter size increased significantly with age.

The effects of feeding monensin and amicloral at 33 and 1500 mg/kg of diet, respectively, were investigated in two experiments using 330-kg steers. Monensin and amicloral, either alone or in combination, increased the digestibility of organic matter and crude fibre compared with a control diet (P < 0·001). Crude protein digestibility was increased by monensin (P < 0·001). Use of monensin and amicloral, alone or in combination, increased molar proportions of propionic acid by 22% on average (P > 0·05), and monensin decreased butyric acid by 37% (P < 0·05).

Ruminal ammonia concentrations were lower in steers fed monensin (P < 0·05). Steers fed monensin consumed 6 % less feed, gained 9 % more weight (P < 0·05) and utilized feed 14% more efficiently (P < 0·05) than control animals. Amicloral, either alone or with monensin, lowered feed intake by 11 % (P < 0·05), had no effect on average daily gain and improved feed efficiency by about 12% (P < 0·05). There were no treatment effects on any of the carcass parameters.

Blood samples were taken from 472 dead lambs on hill farms in Peeblesshire and their serum proteins fractionated by paper electrophoresis. No y-globulin was detected in 84% of the lambs dying on the day of birth, or in 43% of all other lambs aged 9 days or less. Most of these lambs had not fed. But a substantial minority, including 24·5% of all lambs dying, after walking, on the first or second days, i.e. when the gut is normally permeable to protein, had not absorbed γ-globulin despite having food in the gut. This could be due to a failure of colostral proteins to pass from the stomach into the small intestine, γ-globulin being detected relatively more often in lambs with food in their intestines than in lambs with food only in their stomachs; insufficient time between the arrival of food in the small intestine and death; or a premature loss of gut permeability.

The mean γ-globulin levels in lambs aged up to 6 days, excluding those with none, were significantly lower than in live lambs. Differences between older lambs were slight. Lambs aged up to 9 days and recorded as dying of starvation because they had no visceral fat, had significantly lower levels than lambs dying from other causes. The levels in older lambs were not correlated with the reasons for death.

The investigation was designed to measure the time taken to eat concentrate foods and to determine whether the type and quantity of food, the age of the cow, the length of time between feeds and the eating habits of the cow influence consumption rate.

The data indicate that the main factor affecting eating time is the quantity eaten. Within the range of 2 to 8 Ib., the larger the ration the faster the rate of eating. Further, the data show that up to 20 Ib. of concentrates can be consumed per cow per day in a parlour without any check in the faster rate of eating recorded when the higher levels of concentrates are offered.

The type of concentrate is also important: cubes are eaten faster than meal. There are considerable variations between cows in the time taken to eat.

The results of this investigation did not show any obvious effects on the time of eating of breed of cows, position of manger, nor of the length of interval between bulky and concentrate rations.

Graphs relating the eating times of cows with the times available for eating in parlours are shown, and these can be used for reference on farms in parlour planning.

This study was conducted by two trials to investigate effects of sequential feeding with low- and high-protein diets on growth traits and plasma metabolites in geese. In Trial I, the effect of sequential feeding under time-restricted feeding system was investigated. Seventy-two White Roman goslings were randomly allotted into either sequential feeding (S1) or control feeding (C1) group. All goslings were fed for 1 h at morning and at evening, respectively, from 2 to 8 weeks of age. S1 group was offered 13% CP diet at morning and 19% CP diet at evening. C1 group was offered the same diet (16% CP; mixed equally with the two diets mentioned above) at both morning and evening. Blood samples were hourly collected for 4 h after feeding at both morning and evening for the determination of the postprandial plasma levels of glucose, triacylglycerol and uric acid at the end of experiment. Results showed that BW, average daily gain (ADG), and daily feed intake (FI) were not different between groups, but the feed efficiency (FE) in S1 group was significantly higher than that in C1 group (P<0.05). The areas under curve (AUC) of plasma postprandial levels of glucose, triacylglycerol and uric acid were not affected by treatment, but the AUC of triacylglycerol and uric acid in morning were lower than those in evening (P<0.05). In Trial II, the effect of sequential feeding under ad libitum feeding system was investigated. Twenty-four goslings were randomly allotted into either sequential feeding (S2) or control feeding (C2) group. Diets were altered at 0600 and 1800 h, respectively, and geese were fed ad libitum from 4 to 8 weeks of age. S2 group was offered 14% CP diet at morning and 20% CP diet at evening. C2 group was supplied the same diet (mixed with the two diets according to the ratio of diets consumed by S2 group on the preceded day) at both morning and evening. Results showed that the ADG in S2 group was higher than those in C2 group (P<0.05). Summarized data from both trials showed that sequential feeding improves daily gain and FE in growing geese.
