page 132 note 9 The form of the place-name ‘Athereston’ does not determine whether Atherston iuxta Merevale or Atherston on Stour, at opposite corners of Warwickshire, is intended, since the Atherstons, although originally quite different in name, had similar forms by the later middle ages (The Place Names of Warwickshire, ed. Gover, J. E. B., Mawer, A., and Stenton, F. M., English Place-Name Society, xiii (Cambridge, 1936), 77, 248Google Scholar). The geographical position of Atherston iuxta Merevale, lying between Staffordshire and Newbold Revel, makes it a much stronger candidate. It is, however, the fact that the duke of Buckingham had held the life lease of Atherston iuxta Merevale for over ten years by 1450 which makes the identification reasonably certain (SirDugdale, W., The Antiquities of Warwickshire (London, 1656 ed.), pp. 779–80Google Scholar).
