An Arabic Account of the Province of Safed—I

Published online by Cambridge University Press:  24 December 2009

Extract

Arabic manuscript no. 4525 in the Istanbul University Library consists of what appears to be the first part of a history of Safed. The manuscript bears no indication either of the title of the work or of the name of its author. The text begins on the second page; the first contains only a brief quotation on Safed from the Mu‘jam al-buldān of Yāqūt.

page 478 note 1 In an obituary notice on the āfi‘ī jurist Isma‘īl b. alifa (d. 778/1376), Ibn Ḥajar (Inbāal- umr, MS. B.M. Add 7321 Rich, fol. 26b) quotes a statement from his biography by ‘al-‘Umānī, qāḍī of Safed’. There is, however, no reason to assume that this quotation comes from the Tr'rī Ṣafad. The jurist in question is of late date, and seems to have no connexion with Safed; the biography almost certainly comes from ‘Umānī's Ṭahaqāt al-fuqahā’ (cf. GAL S. ii, 108). My thanks are due to Mr. Hasan Habashi for drawing my attention to this passage, as also for his careful proof-reading of my text.
