page 262 note 2 The flaw is not removed by rendering εἴρξουσι… ‘shall attempt to exclude us from alliance with Athens, and then blame us if Athens accepts us for allies’: for there is no inconsistency in the two actions. Moreover the addition of the εῖτα clause upsets the balance of the μ⋯ν…δ⋯ that follow the δειν⋯ν. Hude accepts εῖ τα, but retains πολὺ δ⋯ in the text.
