1 In Bk. i. 43 sqq.! Pelias states that Aeetesmurdered Phrixus. Valerius may have intended to represent a false report as prevalent in Greece; but it is to be observed that v. 224 sqq. do not exclude the possibility that Phrixus was finally a victimof foul play, though his wariness preserved him to a good old age. A third alternative is that Pelias deliberately lies (see Mr. Summers,°1 Val. Fflaccus, p. 3); a fourth that we have to do with an inconsistency which Valerius in revising his poem would have removed.
