Nuevos anticonvulsivantes en la profilaxis del trastorno bipolar

En términos generales podríamos considerar que la sustancia estabilizante más eficaz en el tratamiento del trastomo bipolar debería cumplir las siguientes características: buena tolerancia, pocos efectos secundarios, rapidez de acción, que mejore un polo sin empeorar el otro, que sea eficaz en el tratamiento de ambos polos y que prevenga las recaídas.

El litio, la sustancia clásica y que algunos podrían considerar la más específica para el tratamiento del trastomo bipolar, cumple algunos criterios pero no todos los criterios “ideales”.
