Patterns of Laboratory Parasitisation Rates of Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) in Borers of Sugarcane and Sorghum

Abstract

Laboratory parasitisation rates of a native (Indian) and an exotic (Indonesian) population of the gregarious larval endoparasitoid Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), mass reared by the group-exposure method in glass chimneys, were examined during 1990–1994 on three hosts, namely the sugarcane shoot borer Chilo infuscatellus Snellen, sugarcane internode borer Chilo sacchariphagus indicus (Kapur) and spotted stemborer Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae). Parasitisation rates of both the Indian and Indonesian populations in individual rearing batches showed considerable variation. Correlation and multiple regression analysis of parasitisation rates in rearing batches and three rearing parameters, viz. percent males, number of larvae and number of larvae per female parasitoid, indicated variable influence of the rearing parameters. Parasitisation rates of the Indian population were positively related to percent males and negatively related to number of larvae and number of larvae per female parasitoid in some hosts. The parasitisation rates of the Indonesian population were negatively related to percent males only in Ch. partellus. Mean monthly parasitisation rates of both populations during the study period fluctuated considerably in different hosts. The role of rearing parameters as well as rearing history of host and parasitoid cultures in parasitisation rates is discussed.

Résumé

En 1990–1994, on a évalué le taux de parasitisme des populations locales (Inde) et exotiques (Indonésie) des larves grégaires et endoparasoïdes de Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), une fois élevées en masse sur trois insectes hôtes, par méthode d'exposition en groupes dans des boîtes en verre aérées. Ces hôtes étaient le foreur de bourgeon de la cane à sucre, Chilo infuscatellus Snellen; le foreur d'entre-noeuds de la cane à sucre, Chilo saccariphagus indicus (Kapur) et le foreur de tige, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae). Les taux de parasitisme des populations indiennes et indonésiennes élevées en lots distincts ont montré une variation considérable. L'analyse de corrélation et de régression multiple des taux de parasitisme des lots d'élevage et trois paramètres d'élevage, à savoir le pourcentage des mâles, le nombre de larves et le nombre de larves par parasitoïde femelle, ont révélé une influence variable pour les paramètres d'élevage étudiés. Les taux de parasitisme de la population indienne étaient fortement liés au pourcentage des mâles et négativement liés au nombre de larves et au nombre de larves par parasitoïde femelle pour quelques hôtes. Les taux de parasitisme de la population indonésienne étaient négativement liés au pourcentage des mâles, seulement pour le cas de Ch. partellus. Les taux mensuels moyens de parasitisme des deux populations pendant la période d'étude ont considérablement fluctué au sein des différents hôtes. L'article discute du rôle des paramètres d'élevage de même que des méthodes d'élevage de l'hôte et du parasitoïde.
