We show that an electric field parallel to an electrically neutral surface can generate flow of electrolytic mixtures in small channels. We term this solvo-osmotic flow, since the flow is induced by the asymmetric preferential solvation of ions at the liquid–solid interface. The generated flow is comparable in magnitude to the ubiquitous electro-osmotic flow at charged surfaces, but for a fixed surface charge density, it differs qualitatively in its dependence on ionic strength. Solvo-osmotic flow can also be sensitively controlled with temperature. We derive a modified Helmholtz–Smoluchowski equation that accounts for these effects.

We present measurements of the entrainment of ambient fluid into high-Reynolds-number gravity currents produced by a steady flux of buoyancy. The currents propagate along a horizontal channel and the mixing is measured using a light attenuation technique to obtain the cross-channel average of the density throughout the current. The total volume of the current increases linearly with time, at a rate in the range $(1.8{-}2.1)Q_{o}$ for source Froude numbers, $Fr_{o}$, in the range $0.1{-}3.7$, where $Q_{o}$ is the source volume flux per unit width. Most mixing occurs either immediately downstream of the inflow or near the head of the flow, with an increasing proportion of the entrainment occurring in a mixing zone near the inflow as $Fr_{o}$ increases. A vertical gradient in the density and horizontal velocity develops in this mixing zone. This enables relatively dense fluid at the base of the current to catch up with the head, where it rises and mixes with the ambient fluid which is displaced over the head. The mixed fluid continues forward more slowly than the head, forming the relatively dilute fluid in the upper part of the current. Our data show that the depth and the depth-averaged buoyancy are primarily dependent on the position relative to the front, with the speed of the front being $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}(Fr_{o})B_{o}^{1/3}$, where $B_{o}$ is the source buoyancy flux per unit width. Here, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}(Fr_{o})$ increases from 0.9 to 1.1 as $Fr_{o}$ increases from 0.1 to 3.7, while the Froude number at the head of the flow has a value of $1.1\pm 0.05$.

The present study focuses on the transition between steady convective patterns in fluid-saturated porous media. We conduct experiments to identify the transition point from the single- to double-cell pattern in a two-dimensional porous medium. We then perform a basin stability analysis to assess the relative stability of different convective modes. The resulting basin stability diagram not only provides the domains of coexistence of different modes, but it also shows that the likelihood of finding convective patterns depends strongly on the Rayleigh number. The experimentally observed transition point from single- to double-cell mode agrees well with the stochastically preferred mode inferred from the basin stability diagram.

A cellulose sponge is a mundane porous medium composed of numerous microporous cellulose sheets surrounding macroscale voids. Here, we quantify the capillary rise dynamics of non-aqueous liquids in a sponge using a combination of experiment and theory. Although the classical law of Washburn is obeyed in the early stages, the wet front propagation is no longer diffusive in the late stages and follows a power law, $h\sim t^{1/4}$, with $h$ and $t$ being the capillary rise height and time respectively. The transition of the power law is a consequence of the peculiar heterogeneous pore structure of cellulose sponges. The permeability and driving pressure change at the rise height above which the macro voids can no longer be filled completely due to significant effects of gravity. We rationalize the $t^{1/4}$ law by considering liquid flows along the corners of macro voids driven by capillary pressure of microscale wall pores.

Understanding of the roughness-induced laminar–turbulent transition of supersonic and hypersonic flows is partly challenged by the intricate sensitivities presented by different correlation criteria. We investigate experimentally the effect of height for an isolated roughness element of quadrilateral planform. Heat transfer measurements document the enhancement of roughness-induced disturbances – here the associated heat flux perturbation – along a downstream axisymmetric laminar separation. With increasing element height $k$, a gradual intensification in wake disturbance levels is found for subcritical elements ($k/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{k}<0.15$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{k}$ is the undisturbed boundary layer thickness) while elements taller than the effective condition ($k/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{k}\geqslant 0.32$) bypass the more moderate transition mechanisms to produce a fully turbulent element wake. Results exhibit high sensitivity to flow properties at roughness height between critical and effective conditions. A reduction in wake disturbance levels with increasing height is documented within $0.23\leqslant k/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{k}\leqslant 0.32$. This effect coincides with a decrease in kinematic viscosity at roughness height $\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}_{k}$ (as Mach number at height $M_{k}$ increases from 1.52 to 1.96) and is restricted to elements with strong local separation, whereby the influence of local shear effects is enhanced.

By extracting unstable invariant solutions directly from body-forced three-dimensional turbulence, we study the dynamical processes at play when the forcing is large scale and unidirectional in either the momentum or the vorticity equations. In the former case, the dynamical processes familiar from recent work on linearly stable shear flows – variously called the self-sustaining process (Waleffe, Phys. Fluids, vol. 9 (4), 1997, pp. 883–900) or vortex–wave interaction (Hall & Smith, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 227, 1991, pp. 641–666; Hall & Sherwin, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 661, 2010, pp. 178–205) – are important even when the base flow is linearly unstable. In the latter case, where the forcing drives Taylor–Green vortices, a number of mechanisms are observed from the various types of periodic orbits isolated. In particular, two different transient growth mechanisms are discussed to explain the more complex states found.

The present work considers the low-Reynolds-number wake flow behind a squareback Ahmed body, in close proximity to a ground. At low Reynolds numbers such wakes are known to undergo a series of bifurcations to a state that breaks reflectional symmetry. The symmetry breaking of the wake also persists at turbulent high Reynolds numbers, where it manifests as bi-modal behaviour with random switching between the asymmetric states. Thus far, it has only been possible to study the low-Reynolds-number sequence of bifurcations experimentally and mathematically. The present work presents the first numerical simulations capturing the sequence of symmetry breaking bifurcations that occur. A study of how the wake topology changes throughout suggests that interaction between the closer top/bottom pair of parallel shear layers can only dominate once there is sufficient underbody flow. When this occurs, the two main vortex structures in the wake switch from being horizontally to vertically aligned. A linear feedback control strategy, designed to attenuate base pressure force fluctuations, is then implemented. This causes an accompanying reduction in drag and re-symmetrisation of the wake. Analysis using the dynamic mode decomposition confirms that the wake shedding mode is re-symmetrised. This work motivates future attempts to capture wake symmetry breaking and bi-modality in numerical simulations, and application of a promising feedback control strategy at higher, turbulent Reynolds numbers.

The effects of insulating lids on the convection beneath were investigated experimentally using rectangular convection cells in the flux Rayleigh number range $2.3\times 10^{9}\leqslant Ra_{F}\leqslant 1.8\times 10^{11}$ and cylindrical cells in the range $1.4\times 10^{10}\leqslant Ra_{F}\leqslant 1.2\times 10^{12}$ with the Prandtl number $Pr$ fixed at 4.3. It is found that the presence of the insulating lids leads to reduction of the global heat transfer efficiency as expected, which primarily depends on the insulating area but is insensitive to the detailed insulating patterns. At the leading-order level, the magnitude of temperature fluctuations in the bulk fluid is, again, found to be insensitive to the insulating pattern and mainly depends on the insulating area; while the temperature probability density function in the bulk is essentially invariant with respect to both the insulating area and the spatial pattern of the lids. The flow dynamics, on the other hand, is sensitive to both the covering area and the spatial distribution of the lids. At fixed $Ra_{F}$ , the flow strength is found to increase with increasing insulating area so as to transfer the same amount of heat through a smaller cooling area. Moreover, for a constant insulating area, a symmetric insulating pattern results in a symmetric flow pattern, i.e. double-roll structure; whereas an asymmetric insulating pattern leads to asymmetric flow, i.e. single-roll structure. It is further found that the symmetry breaking of the insulating pattern leads to a stronger flow that enhances the horizontal velocity more than the vertical velocity.

Because of the associated far-field logarithmic divergence, the transport problem governing two-dimensional phoretic self-propulsion lacks a steady solution when the Péclet number $\mathit{Pe}$ vanishes. This indeterminacy, which has no counterpart in three dimensions, is remedied by introducing a non-zero value of $\mathit{Pe}$, however small. We consider that problem employing a first-order kinetic model of solute absorption, where the ratio of the characteristic magnitudes of reaction and diffusion is quantified by the Damköhler number $\mathit{Da}$. As $\mathit{Pe}\rightarrow 0$ the dominance of diffusion breaks down at distances that scale inversely with $\mathit{Pe}$; at these distances, the leading-order transport represents a two-dimensional point source in a uniform stream. Asymptotic matching between the latter region and the diffusion-dominated near-particle region provides the leading-order particle velocity as an implicit function of $\log \mathit{Pe}$. Another scenario involving weak advection takes place under strong reactions, where $\mathit{Pe}$ and $\mathit{Da}$ are large and comparable. In that limit, the breakdown of diffusive dominance occurs at distances that scale as $\mathit{Da}^{2}/\mathit{Pe}$.

The fate of small particles in turbulent flows depends strongly on the velocity gradient properties of the surrounding fluid, such as rotation and strain rates. For non-inertial (fluid) particles, the restricted Euler model provides a simple low-dimensional dynamical system representation of Lagrangian evolution of velocity gradients in fluid turbulence, at least for short times. Here, we derive a new restricted Euler dynamical system for the velocity gradient evolution of inertial particles, such as solid particles in a gas, or droplets and bubbles in turbulent liquid flows. The model is derived in the limit of small (sub-Kolmogorov-scale) particles and low Stokes number. The system exhibits interesting fixed points, stability and invariant properties. Comparisons with data from direct numerical simulations show that the model predicts realistic trends such as the tendency of increased straining over rotation along heavy particle trajectories and, for light particles such as bubbles, the tendency of reduced self-stretching of the strain rate.

Experimental and numerical studies have shown that, with sufficient nonlinearity, the theoretical capillary-wave power-law spectrum derived from the kinetic equation (KE) of weak turbulence theory can be realized. This is despite the fact that the KE is derived assuming an infinite domain with continuous wavenumber, while experiments and numerical simulations are conducted in realistic finite domains with discrete wavenumbers for which the KE theoretically allows no energy transfer. To understand this, we first analyse results from direct simulations of the primitive Euler equations to elucidate the role of nonlinear resonance broadening (NRB) in discrete turbulence. We define a quantitative measure of the NRB, explaining its dependence on the nonlinearity level and its effect on the properties of the obtained stationary power-law spectra. This inspires us to develop a new quasi-resonant kinetic equation (QKE) for discrete turbulence, which incorporates the mechanism of NRB, governed by a single parameter $\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}$ expressing the ratio of NRB and wavenumber discreteness. At $\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}=\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}_{0}\approx 0.02$, the QKE recovers simultaneously the spectral slope $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}_{0}=-17/4$ and the Kolmogorov constant $C_{0}=6.97$ (corrected from the original derivation) of the theoretical continuous spectrum, which physically represents the upper bound of energy cascade capacity for the discrete turbulence. For $\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}<\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}_{0}$, the obtained spectra represent those corresponding to a finite domain with insufficient nonlinearity, resulting in a steeper spectral slope $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}<\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}_{0}$ and reduced capacity of energy cascade $C>C_{0}$. The physical insights from the QKE are corroborated by direct simulation results of the Euler equations.

For the first time, a physical mechanism is identified to explain the phase lag term in Powell’s impinging feedback loop equation (Powell, J. Acoust. Soc. Am., vol. 83 (2), 1988, pp. 515–533). Ultra-high-speed schlieren reveals a previously unseen periodic transient shock in the wall jet region of underexpanded impinging flows. The motion of this shock appears to be responsible for the production of the acoustic waves corresponding to the impingement tone. It is suggested that the delay between the inception of the shock and the formation of the acoustic wave explains the phase lag in the aeroacoustic feedback process. This suggestion is quantitatively supported through an assessment of Powell’s feedback equation, using high-resolution particle image velocimetry and acoustic measurements.

The modified Townsend–Perry attached-eddy model of Vassilicos et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 774, 2015, pp. 324–341) combines the outer peak/plateau behaviour of root-mean-square streamwise turbulence velocity profiles and the Townsend–Perry log decay of these profiles at higher distances from the wall. This model was validated by these authors for high-Reynolds-number turbulent pipe flow data and is shown here to describe equally well, and with approximately the same parameter values, turbulent boundary layer flow data from four different facilities and a wide range of Reynolds numbers. The model has predictive value as, when extrapolated to the extremely high Reynolds numbers of the SLTEST data obtained at the Great Salt Lake Desert atmospheric test facility, it matches these data quite well.

In this experimental study, we investigate the interaction of gravity–capillary solitary waves generated by two surface pressure sources moving side by side at constant speed. The nonlinear response of a water surface to a single source moving at a speed just below the minimum phase speed of linear gravity–capillary waves in deep water ($c_{min}\approx 23~\text{cm}~\text{s}^{-1}$) consists of periodic generation of pairs of three-dimensional solitary waves (or lumps) in a V-shaped pattern downstream of the source. In the reference frame of the laboratory, these unsteady lumps propagate in a direction oblique to the motion of the source. In the present experiments, the strengths of the two sources are adjusted to produce nearly identical responses and the free-surface deformations are visualized using photography-based techniques. The first lumps generated by the two sources move in intersecting directions that make a half-angle of approximately $15^{\circ }$ and collide in the centreplane between the sources. A steep depression is formed during the collision, but this depression quickly decreases in amplitude while radiating small-amplitude radial waves. After the collision, a quasi-stable pattern is formed with several rows of localized depressions that are qualitatively similar to lumps but exhibit periodic amplitude oscillations, similar to a breather. The shape of the wave pattern and the period of oscillations depend strongly on the distance between the sources.

It is well known that when a flexible or flexibly mounted structure is placed perpendicular to the flow of a Newtonian fluid, it can oscillate due to the shedding of separated vortices. Here, we show for the first time that fluid–structure interactions can also be observed when the fluid is viscoelastic. For viscoelastic fluids, a flexible structure can become unstable in the absence of fluid inertia, at infinitesimal Reynolds numbers, due to the onset of a purely elastic flow instability. Nonlinear periodic oscillations of the flexible structure are observed and found to be coupled to the time-dependent growth and decay of viscoelastic stresses in the wake of the structure.

The effect of angular misalignment on the low-frequency dynamics of the near wake of a blunt-based axisymmetric body is investigated at a Reynolds number of $Re=67\,000$. While for axisymmetric boundary conditions all azimuthal orientations of the wake are explored with equal probability, resulting in a statistical axisymmetry, an angular offset as small as $0.2^{\circ }$ is found to suppress the low-frequency large-scale behaviour that is associated with the erratic meandering of the region of reversed flow. As a result of the misalignment, the centroid of this backflow region is displaced from the model axis and remains confined around an average off-centre position. Spectral and modal analysis provides evidence that the erratic backflow behaviour occurs within a narrow angular range of deviations from axisymmetric conditions.

We numerically investigate the direct initiation of detonations driven by the propagation of a blast wave into a unconfined gaseous combustible mixture to study the role played by multidimensional instabilities in direct initiation of stable and unstable detonations. To this end, we first model the dynamics of unsteady propagation of detonation using the one-dimensional compressible Euler equations with a one-step chemical reaction model and cylindrical geometrical source terms. Subsequently, we use two-dimensional compressible Euler equations with just the chemical reaction source term to directly model cylindrical detonations. The one-dimensional results suggest that there are three regimes in the direct initiation for stable detonations, that the critical energy for mildly unstable detonations is not unique, and that highly unstable detonations are not self-sustainable. These phenomena agree well with one-dimensional theories and computations available in the literature. However, our two-dimensional results indicate that one-dimensional approaches are valid only for stable detonations. In mildly and highly unstable detonations, one-dimensional approaches break down because they cannot take the effects and interactions of multidimensional instabilities into account. In fact, instabilities generated in multidimensional settings yield the formation of strong transverse waves that, on one hand, increase the risk of failure of the detonation and, on the other hand, lead to the initiation of local over-driven detonations that enhance the overall self-sustainability of the global process. The competition between these two possible outcomes plays an important role in the direct initiation of detonations.

This paper is concerned with the classical, well-studied problem of convective instabilities in rapidly rotating, self-gravitating, internally heated Boussinesq fluid spheres. Sanchez et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 791, 2016, R1) recently found, unexpectedly via careful numerical simulation, that non-magnetic convection in the form of axially symmetric, equatorially antisymmetric torsional oscillation is physically preferred in a special range of small Prandtl number for rapidly rotating fluid spheres with the stress-free boundary condition. We derive an asymptotic solution describing convection-driven torsional oscillation – whose flow velocity and pressure are fully analytical and in closed form – that confirms the result of the numerical analysis and is in quantitative agreement with the numerical solution. We also demonstrate, through the derivation of a different asymptotic solution, that convection-driven torsional oscillation cannot occur in rapidly rotating fluid spheres with the no-slip boundary condition.

Incompressible three-dimensional Euler equations develop high vorticity in very thin pancake-like regions from generic large-scale initial conditions. In this work, we propose an exact solution of the Euler equations for the asymptotic pancake evolution. This solution combines a shear flow aligned with an asymmetric straining flow, and is characterized by a single asymmetry parameter and an arbitrary transversal vorticity profile. The analysis is based on detailed comparison with numerical simulations performed using a pseudospectral method in anisotropic grids of up to $972\times 2048\times 4096$.

Swimming micro-organisms often have to propel themselves in complex non-Newtonian fluids. We carry out experiments with self-propelling helical swimmers driven by an externally rotating magnetic field in shear-thinning inelastic fluids. Similarly to swimming in a Newtonian fluid, we obtain for each fluid a locomotion speed that scales linearly with the rotation frequency of the swimmer, but with a prefactor that depends on the power index of the fluid. The fluid is seen to always increase the swimming speed of the helix, up to 50 % faster, and thus the strongest of such type reported to date. The maximum relative increase is for a fluid power index of approximately 0.6. Using simple scalings, we argue that the speed increase is not due directly to the local decrease of the flow viscosity around the helical filament, but hypothesise instead that it originates from confinement-like effect due to viscosity stratification around the swimmer.
