This study revisits the problem of a steadily propagating semi-infinite hydraulic fracture in which the processes of toughness-related energy release, viscous dissipation and leak-off compete on multiple length scales. This problem typically requires the solution of a system of integro-differential equations with a singular kernel, which is complicated by the need to capture extremely disparate length scales. In this study the governing equations are rewritten in the form of one non-singular integral equation. This reformulation enables the use of standard numerical techniques to capture the complete multiscale behaviour accurately and efficiently. This formulation also makes it possible to approximate the problem by a separable ordinary differential equation, whose closed-form solution captures the multiscale behaviour sufficiently accurately to be used in practical applications. We also consider a similar reformulation of the equations governing the propagation of a buoyancy-driven semi-infinite hydraulic fracture. The resulting numerical solution is able to capture the near-tip multiscale behaviour efficiently and agrees well with published solutions calculated in the large-toughness limit.

Two-dimensional free-surface flow over a spatially periodic channel bed topography is examined using a steady periodically forced Korteweg–de Vries equation. The existence of new forced solitary-type waves with periodic tails is demonstrated using recently developed non-autonomous dynamical-systems theory. Bound states with two or more co-existing solitary waves are also identified. The solution space for varying amplitude of forcing is explored using a numerical method. A rich bifurcation structure is uncovered and shown to be consistent with an asymptotic theory based on small forcing amplitude.

We study the freely decaying weak turbulence of capillary waves by direct numerical solution of the primitive Euler equations. By introducing a small amount of wave dissipation, measured by the viscosity magnitude ${\it\gamma}_{0}$, we are able to recover phenomena observed in experiments that are not described by weak-turbulence theory (WTT), including the exponential modal decay and time variation of the width and power-law spectral slope ${\it\alpha}$ of the inertial range. In contrast to WTT, this problem also involves non-constant inter-modal energy transfer across the inertial range, which imposes a difficulty in quantifying and measuring the energy flux $P$ associated with a certain power-law spectrum. We propose an effective and novel way to evaluate $P$ in such cases by physically considering the unsteady effects of the spectrum and variation of the inter-modal energy transfer. Our results show the fundamental difference between the energy flux $P$ and the total energy dissipation rate ${\it\Gamma}$, which is due to significant energy dissipation within the inertial range. This settles the previous debate on the measurement of $P$ which assumes the equivalence of the two. Based on our numerical data, we obtain a general form of the time-evolving inertial-range spectrum, where the parameters involved are functions of ${\it\gamma}_{0}$ only. The value of the spectral slope ${\it\alpha}$ at each time moment in the decay, however, is found to be uniquely related to the spectral magnitude at that time and irrespective of ${\it\gamma}_{0}$, in the range we consider. This physically reveals the dominant effect of nonlinear wave interaction in forming the power-law spectrum within the inertial range. The evolutions of the inertial-range energy are shown to be predicted by analytical integration of the evolving spectra for different values of ${\it\gamma}_{0}$.

We analyse the low-Reynolds-number flow generated by a cylinder (of radius $a$) in a stream (of velocity $U_{\infty }$) which has a uniform through-surface blowing component (of velocity $U_{b}$). The flow is characterized in terms of the Reynolds number $Re$ ($=2aU_{\infty }/{\it\nu}$, where ${\it\nu}$ is the kinematic viscosity of the fluid) and the dimensionless blow velocity ${\it\Lambda}$ ($=U_{b}/U_{\infty }$). We seek the leading-order symmetric solution of the vorticity field which satisfies the near- and far-field boundary conditions. The drag coefficient is then determined from the vorticity field. For the no-blow case Lamb’s (Phil. Mag., vol. 21, 1911, pp. 112–121) expression is retrieved for $Re\rightarrow 0$. For the strong-sucking case, the asymptotic limit, $C_{D}\approx -2{\rm\pi}{\it\Lambda}$, is confirmed. The blowing solution is valid for ${\it\Lambda}<4/Re$, after which the flow is unsymmetrical about ${\it\theta}={\rm\pi}/2$. The analytical results are compared with full numerical solutions for the drag coefficient $C_{D}$ and the fraction of drag due to viscous stresses. The predictions show good agreement for $Re=0.1$ and ${\it\Lambda}=-5,0,5$.

We experimentally determine the phase diagram for impacting ethanol droplets on a smooth, sapphire surface in the parameter space of Weber number $\mathit{We}$ versus surface temperature $T$. We observe two transitions, namely the one towards splashing (disintegration of the droplet) with increasing $\mathit{We}$, and the one towards the Leidenfrost state (no contact between the droplet and the plate due to a lasting vapour film) with increasing $T$. Consequently, there are four regimes: contact and no splashing (deposition regime), contact and splashing (contact–splash regime), neither contact nor splashing (bounce regime), and finally no contact, but splashing (film–splash regime). While the transition temperature $T_{L}$ to the Leidenfrost state depends weakly, at most, on $\mathit{We}$ in the parameter regime of the present study, the transition Weber number $\mathit{We}_{C}$ towards splashing shows a strong dependence on $T$ and a discontinuity at $T_{L}$. We quantitatively explain the splashing transition for $T<T_{L}$ by incorporating the temperature dependence of the physical properties in the theory by Riboux & Gordillo (Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 113(2), 2014, 024507; J. Fluid Mech., vol. 772, 2015, pp. 630–648).

The Riemann problem of planar shock waves is analysed for a dilute granular gas by solving Euler- and Navier–Stokes-order equations numerically. The density and temperature profiles are found to be asymmetric, with the maxima of both density and temperature occurring within the shock layer. The density peak increases with increasing Mach number and inelasticity, and is found to propagate at a steady speed at late times. The granular temperature at the upstream end of the shock decays according to Haff’s law (${\it\theta}(t)\sim t^{-2}$), but the downstream temperature decays faster than its upstream counterpart. Haff’s law seems to hold inside the shock up to a certain time for weak shocks, but deviations occur for strong shocks. The time at which the maximum temperature deviates from Haff’s law follows a power-law scaling with the upstream Mach number and the restitution coefficient. The origin of the continual build-up of density with time is discussed, and it is shown that the granular energy equation must be ‘regularized’ to arrest the maximum density.

We present the complete unfolding of streamwise localisation in a paradigm of extended shear flows, namely two-dimensional plane Poiseuille flow. Exact solutions of the Navier–Stokes equations are computed numerically and tracked in the streamwise wavenumber–Reynolds number parameter space to identify and describe the fundamental mechanism behind streamwise localisation, a ubiquitous feature of shear flow turbulence. Unlike shear flow spanwise localisation, streamwise localisation does not follow the snaking mechanism demonstrated for plane Couette flow.

We study the behaviour of elongated puddles deposited on non-wetting substrates. Such liquid strips retract and adopt circular shapes after a few oscillations. Their thickness and horizontal surface area remain constant during this reorganization, so that the energy of the system is only lowered by minimizing the length of the contour (and the corresponding surface energy); despite the large scale of the experiments (several centimetres), motion is driven by surface tension. We focus on the retraction stage, and show that its velocity results from a balance between the capillary driving force and inertia, due to the frictionless motion on non-wetting substrates. As a consequence, the retraction velocity has a special Taylor–Culick structure, where the puddle width replaces the usual thickness.

We present measurements of the azimuthal rotation velocity $\dot{{\it\theta}}(t)$ and thermal amplitude ${\it\delta}(t)$ of the large-scale circulation in turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection with modulated rotation. Both $\dot{{\it\theta}}(t)$ and ${\it\delta}(t)$ exhibit clear oscillations at the modulation frequency ${\it\omega}$. Fluid acceleration driven by oscillating Coriolis force causes an increasing phase lag in $\dot{{\it\theta}}(t)$ when ${\it\omega}$ increases. The applied modulation produces oscillatory boundary layers and the resulting time-varying viscous drag modifies ${\it\delta}(t)$ periodically. Oscillation of $\dot{{\it\theta}}(t)$ with maximum amplitude occurs at a finite modulation frequency ${\it\omega}^{\ast }$. Such a resonance-like phenomenon is interpreted as a result of optimal coupling of ${\it\delta}(t)$ to the modulated rotation velocity. We show that an extended large-scale circulation model with a relaxation time for ${\it\delta}(t)$ in response to the modulated rotation provides predictions in close agreement with the experimental results.

We report an experimental study of the large-scale circulation (LSC) reversal in quasi-2D turbulent thermal convection, in which the aspect ratio ${\it\Gamma}$ ($=\text{height}/\text{length}$ of a rectangular box) is used as a parameter to perturb the stability of the LSC. It is found that the mean time interval $\langle {\it\tau}\rangle$ between two successive reversals increases strongly with increasing ${\it\Gamma}$. A stochastic model is proposed to incorporate the effect of the corner rolls. In the model, the aspect ratio serves as a tuning parameter for the relative weight of the corner rolls that damp the LSC. The model predictions for the shape of the bistable states of the system and $\langle {\it\tau}\rangle$ agree excellently with the experimental results, with $\langle {\it\tau}\rangle$ having an unexpected stretched exponential Rayleigh number dependence, ${\sim}\!\exp (Ra^{{\it\alpha}})$. We further show quantitatively that the main damping force of the LSC in a quasi-2D system is from the corner rolls rather than the viscous drag from the sidewalls, which bridges the difference found in quasi-2D and 3D systems.

A modelling methodology to reproduce the experimental measurements of a turbulent flow in the presence of symmetry is presented. The flow is a three-dimensional wake generated by an axisymmetric body. We show that the dynamics of the turbulent wake flow can be assimilated by a nonlinear two-dimensional Langevin equation, the deterministic part of which accounts for the broken symmetries that occur in the laminar and transitional regimes at low Reynolds numbers and the stochastic part of which accounts for the turbulent fluctuations. Comparison between theoretical and experimental results allows the extraction of the model parameters.

Here, we study noisy transitional flows in imperfect millimetre-scale channels. For probing the flows, we use microcantilever sensors embedded in the channel walls. We perform experiments in two nominally identical channels. The different sets of imperfections in the two channels result in two random flows in which the high-order moments of the near-wall fluctuations differ by orders of magnitude. Surprisingly, however, the lowest-order statistics in both cases appear to be qualitatively similar and can be described by a proposed noisy Landau equation for a slow mode. The noise, regardless of its origin, regularizes the Landau singularity of the relaxation time and makes transitions driven by different noise sources appear similar.

Direct numerical simulations of flows in cylinders subjected to both rapid rotation and axial precession are presented and analysed in the context of a stability theory based on the triadic resonance of Kelvin modes. For a case that was chosen to provide a finely tuned resonant instability with a small nutation angle, the simulations are in good agreement with the theory and previous experiments in terms of mode shapes and dynamics, including long-time-scale regularization of the flow and recurrent collapses. Cases not tuned to the most unstable triad, but with the nutation angle still small, are also in quite good agreement with theoretical predictions, showing that the presence of viscosity makes the physics of the triadic-resonance model robust to detuning. Finally, for a case with $45^{\circ }$ nutation angle for which it has been suggested that resonance does not occur, the simulations show that a slowly growing triadic resonance predicted by theory is in fact observed if sufficient evolution time is allowed.

A theoretical model of water wave overwash of a thin floating plate is proposed. The nonlinear shallow-water equations are used to model the overwash, and the linear potential-flow/thin-plate model to force it. Model predictions are compared with overwash depths measured during a series of laboratory wave basin experiments. The model is shown to be accurate for incident waves of low steepness or short length.

In the current literature, the dispersion relation of parametrically forced surface waves is often identified with that of free unforced waves. We revisit here the theoretical description of Faraday waves, showing that forcing and dissipation play a significant role in the dispersion relation, rendering it bi-valued. We then determine the instability thresholds and the wavenumber selection in cases of both short and long waves. We show that the bifurcation can be either supercritical or subcritical, depending on the depth.

The modulation of small-scale velocity and velocity gradient quantities by concurrent large-scale velocity fluctuations is observed by consideration of the Kullback–Leibler divergence. This is a measure that quantifies the loss of information in modelling a statistical distribution of small-scale quantities conditioned on concurrent positive large-scale fluctuations by that conditioned on negative large-scale fluctuations. It is observed that the small-scale turbulence is appreciably ‘rougher’ when the concurrent large-scale fluctuation is positive in the low-speed side of a fully developed turbulent mixing layer, which gives further evidence to the convective scale modulation argument of Buxton & Ganapathisubramani (Phys. Fluids, vol. 26, 2014, 125106, 1–19). The definition of the small scales is varied, and regardless of whether the small-scale fluctuations are dominated by dissipation or have the characteristic features of inertial range turbulence they are shown to be modulated by the concurrent large-scale fluctuations. The modulation is observed to persist even when there is a large gap in wavenumber space between the small and large scales, although local maxima are observed at intermediate length scales that are significantly larger than the predefined small scales. Finally, it is observed that the modulation of small-scale dissipation is greater than that for enstrophy with the modulation of the vortex stretching term, indicative of the interaction between strain rate and rotation, being intermediate between the two.

Pressure-imposed rheometry is used to study the rheological properties of suspensions of non-colloidal spheres in yield-stress fluids. Accurate measurements for both the shear stress and the particle normal stress are obtained in the dense regime. The rheological measurements are favourably compared with a model based on scaling arguments and homogenisation methods.

We derive new formulae for the fundamental solutions of slow viscous flow, governed by the Stokes equations, in a half-space. They are simpler than the classical representations obtained by Blake and collaborators, and can be efficiently implemented using existing fast solver libraries. We show, for example, that the velocity field induced by a Stokeslet can be annihilated on the boundary (to establish a zero-slip condition) using a single reflected Stokeslet combined with a single Papkovich–Neuber potential that involves only a scalar harmonic function. The new representation has a physically intuitive interpretation.

In this work it is shown that hairpin vortex structures can be the outcome of a nonlinear optimal growth process, in a similar way as streaky structures can be the result of a linear optimal growth mechanism. With this purpose, nonlinear optimizations based on a Lagrange multiplier technique coupled with a direct-adjoint iterative procedure are performed in a plane Poiseuille flow at subcritical values of the Reynolds number, aiming at quickly triggering nonlinear effects. Choosing a suitable time scale for such an optimization process, it is found that the initial optimal perturbation is composed of sweeps and ejections resulting in a hairpin vortex structure at the target time. These alternating sweeps and ejections create an inflectional instability occurring in a localized region away from the wall, generating the head of the primary and secondary hairpin structures, quickly inducing transition to turbulent flow. This result could explain why transitional and turbulent shear flows are characterized by a high density of hairpin vortices.

A drop dried on a solid surface will typically leave a narrow band of solute deposited along the contact line. Here we examine variations of this deposit due to the inclination of the substrate using numerical simulations of a two-dimensional drop, equivalent to a strip-like drop. An asymptotic analysis of the contact line region predicts that the upslope deposit will grow faster at early times, but the growth of this deposit ends sooner because the upper contact line depins first. From our simulations we find that the deposit can be larger at either the upper or lower contact line depending on the initial drop volume and substrate inclination. For larger drops and steeper inclinations, the early lead in deposited mass at the upper contact line is wiped out by the earlier depinning of the upper contact line and subsequent continued growth at the lower contact line. Conversely, for smaller drops and shallower inclinations, the early lead of the upper contact line is insurmountable despite its earlier termination in growth. Our results show that it is difficult to reconstruct a posteriori the inclination of the substrate based solely on the shape of the deposit.
