During March, 1950, the writers visited a 15-acre field of mixed oats and vetches near Lechlade, Gloucestershire, because it was reported that the crop was patchy and that both oats and vetches were diseased. Inspection of the field revealed typical “tulip-root” symptoms in the oats, while many of the vetches were severely dwarfed and showed browning of the lower parts of the stems. Subsequent examination of plants in the laboratory showed the presence of large numbers of Ditylenchus dipsaci in the oats and a rather lighter infestation in the vetches; in the latter the eelworms seemed to be associated particularly with the necrotic tissues in the lower parts of the stems. It may also be mentioned that young docks, probably Rumex crispus L., from the same field were found to contain D.dipsaci.

The Filariasis Commission, composed as it was of British, Chinese, and Mohammedan members, was able to take a more extensive and a more representative survey of the incidence of filariasis than would have been possible in the case of a single investigator. Dr. Khalil had frequent invitations to local Mohammedan ceremonies, and as these were usually held at night, he was able to examine a large number of bloodfilms from East Indian immigrants. Dr. C. U. Lee was very hospitably received by the Chinese families of Georgetown, and collected statistics as to the filarial rate amongst them on a scale that was hitherto unattainable. The whole commission, working together, was able to undertake a survey of an institution such as Georgetown Prison, the Almshouse, or Christchurch Public School with little inconvenience to the children or inmates. Thus from hospitals, schools, prisons, asylums, and domiciliary visitations, the Commission collected details and examined blood-films from 4,215 inhabitants of British Guiana. The total number of examinations was made up as follows:—

1. Heavy intestinal infestation with Plagiorchis (M.) megalorchis Rees, 1952, in four two-week old turkey poults is described. This was presumably the cause of death in the four poults and possibly of nine other birds of the same hatch.

2. The epizootiology of the condition is described.

3. The life-cycle of the parasite has been investigated, using turkey poults as the definitive host.

Amongst the plant-parasitic members of the genus Anguillulina, 12 species have been recorded from true galls and of these, one occurs on roots and the remainder on shoot structures. In four only of these species have we any detailed information on the structure of the galls formed as a result of the action of the parasite, namely in the cases of A. tritici, A. agrostis, A. graminophila and A. radicicola. In the case of the two first mentioned, galls are formed from modified flower tissues; in the case of A. graminophila we have galls on leaves and in A. radicicola galls on roots. There are considerable gaps in our knowledge of the reaction of the host plant to the particular parasite attacking it and also concerning the mode of action of the latter in stimulating the production of galls by the host.

A 2-year-old boy living outside the endemic area of lymphatic filariasis in Surat Thani Province, Thailand, developed a high fever. To investigate the cause of his presenting symptoms, blood was collected and microfilariae were detected and identified as Brugia malayi using thick blood smear staining. The sources of the infection were investigated. Microfilariae from two domestic cats residing in the boy's village were detected and identified as B. pahangi using a high-resolution melting real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis. The possible sources of this cryptic infection are discussed.

Nicoll and Minchin gave an account in 1910, in the Abstract of Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, of their finding a Cysticercoid in the rat-flea, Ceratophyllus fasciatus, “very like the scolex of Hymenolepis murina Duj. … it [H. murina] was the only rat-tapeworm to which the Cysticercoid could be referred.”

The lipid composition of three batches of single generation cysts of Globodera rostochiensis, stored dry at 4°C for 1,7 and 13 years, comprised 81%, 74% and 53% neutral lipids, 14%, 18% and 27% non-acidic phospholipids and 5%, 8% and 20% free fatty acids, respectively. Lipids in eggs from two batches of G. pallida cysts, stored for 3 and 7 years, comprised 80% and 67% neutral lipids, 15% and 23% non-acidic phospholipids and 5% and 10% free fatty acids, respectively. All batches contained the same fatty acids which were dominated by C18:l, C20:l and C20:4. The fatty acid profiles of hatched J2 of G. rostochiensis from two batches, stored for 1 and 9 years, differed only in their free fatty acid fractions. Thus, while it is not possible to determine the age of cysts by their fatty acid profile, it may be possible to use the relative amounts of the main lipid classes as an indicator of age. Four batches of hatched J2 of G. pallida were investigated, with sample A hatched during the second week in potato root diffusate, B during week 3, C during week 4 and D during weeks 5 and 6 and stored for 3.5 days (on average) after hatching. Total lipid content was 27.2%, 31.5%, 18.5% and 6.3% of the dry weight for A, B, C and D, respectively. In the neutral lipid fraction of D an increase in C18:l and to a lesser extent C18:2 was observed. In the free fatty acid fraction of sample D, the percentages of C18:l, C18:2 and C18:3 were greater but the percentages of C20:3 and C20:4 were smaller compared with sample C. Fresh early hatched J2 of G. rostochiensis were compared with later hatched and stored (for 13 days on average) individuals for their lipid content and fatty acid composition. The lipid content was 26.1% and 11.4% in fresh and stored J2, respectively. Total lipid consisted of 77% and 70% neutral lipid, 18% and 26% non-acidic phospholipid and 6% and 4% free fatty acid in fresh and stored J2, respectively. In the neutral lipid fraction of stored J2 C18:l, C16:0 and C18:0 increased, whereas C20:4, C20:l and C20:3 decreased. Therefore, both neutral lipid and free fatty acid fractions showed changes in their fatty acid profiles after long delayed hatching and/or storage in both PCN species.

Acanthocheilonema viteae, Litomosoides carinii and Setaria cervi were found to actively synthesize proteins in vitro. Different centrifugation fractions and their TCA-precipitable fractions were assessed for the distribution of newly synthesized proteins. Penicillin and streptomycin inhibited the process in A. viteae. The synthesis in S. cervi was susceptible to puromycin, chloramphenicol, cycloheximide, neomycin and polymyxin B. The process in L. carinii was strongly blocked by puromycin while chloramphenicol had no significant effect.

A serum IgG response to Strongyloides papillosus infection was analysed in rabbits. IgG production was induced against 30–200 kDa larval somatic antigens and 21–160 kDa adult excretory/secretory (ES) antigens at 4 weeks postinfection. No immunoreactivity was detected between sera of infected animals and any proteins of larval ES and adult somatic antigens. Protection against larval challenge infection was investigated in rabbits immunized by primary infection and by intradermal inoculations of larval somatic and adult ES antigens. Primarily infected animals had 90% fewer or less worms from day 2 onwards after challenge, and lower faecal egg outputs after challenge, when compared with those in susceptible animals. Immunization with larval somatic antigens induced effective protection, showing 52.6–81.5% reductions in worm recovery from day 5 onwards after challenge, and lower faecal egg outputs after challenge. Systemic immunization with adult ES antigens failed to protect the animals against challenge. The possibility that resistance to S. papillosus reinfection is performed on the killing of migrating larvae in the early stages of infection is discussed. Systemic immune responses to larval somatic antigens might play an important role in the resistance.

Three species, and one variety, of the pseudophyllid genus Bothridium de Blainville, are known to occur in pythons. B. ovatum occurs in the African python (P. sebce): B. pythonis in the Indian python (P. molurus) and B. pythonis var minor in P. reticulatus, the Indo-Malayan python; while Maplestone and Southwell (1923, p. 317) record another species, B. ornatum from the Australasian python (P. spilotes var variegatus). The literature on this genus appears, so far, to have dealt only with morphology and taxonomies. Joyeux and Baer (1927, p. 126) describe the anatomy and relationships of B. ovatum, B. pythonis and B. pythonis var. minor. Braun (1894–1900, p. 1690) gives a brief description, accompanied by very detailed figures, of the anatomy of B. pythonis and also figures the embryonated ovum (pi. Iviii, fig. 8). This is the only figure of any developmental stage of the parasite which the writer has been able to discover. Southwell (1930, p. 58) records the worm from P. reticularis and P. molurus, in Bengal, Nepal and Ceylon, and summarises its anatomy. He also mentions its occurrence in a tiger which he thinks had been eating a python. No account of the life-cycle of any species of Bothridium appears to have been written. When, therefore, in February, 1932, some living Bothridium arrived in the Helminthology Department, it was resolved to discover how far its development resembled that of other better-known Psuedophyllids.

Toxocara canis is an important but neglected zoonotic parasite, and is the causative agent of human toxocariasis. Chondroitin proteoglycans are biological macromolecules, widely distributed in extracellular matrices, with a great diversity of functions in mammals. However, there is limited information regarding chondroitin proteoglycans in nematode parasites. In the present study, a female-enriched chondroitin proteoglycan 2 gene of T. canis (Tc-cpg-2) was cloned and characterized. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was employed to measure the transcription levels of Tc-cpg-2 among tissues of male and female adult worms. A 485-amino-acid (aa) polypeptide was predicted from a continuous 1458-nuleotide open reading frame and designated as TcCPG2, which contains a 21-aa signal peptide. Conserved domain searching indicated three chitin-binding peritrophin-A (CBM_14) domains in the amino acid sequence of TcCPG2. Multiple alignment with the inferred amino acid sequences of Caenorhabditis elegans and Ascaris suum showed that CBM_14 domains were well conserved among these species. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that TcCPG2 was closely related to the sequence of chondroitin proteoglycan 2 of A. suum. Interestingly, a high level of Tc-cpg-2 was detected in female germline tissues, particularly in the oviduct, suggesting potential roles of this gene in reproduction (e.g. oogenesis and embryogenesis) of adult T. canis. The functional roles of Tc-cpg-2 in reproduction and development in this parasite and related parasitic nematodes warrant further functional studies.

Proteocephalus pentastoma and Polyonchobothrium polypteri are redescribed from specimens from Polypterus spp. in the Sudan. Proteocephalus pentastoma is considered to be a valid species.

Descriptions of four new tylenchs belonging to different genera are given : (1) Tylenchus (Tylenchus) holochmatus n.sp., (2) Tylenchorhynchus varicaudatus n.sp., (3) Trichotylenchus trilokiae n.sp., (4) Helicotylenchus pteracercus n.sp. The material of the first described species was collected in North India and that of the other new species in South India. Systematic features of new species are fully discussed and compared with those of the related forms.

Detailed descriptions are given of Tylenchorhynchus digitatus and Pratylenchus indicus described by Das (I960) from Hyderabad. The material was collected from type locality but from different hosts. Tylenchorhynchus curvus Williams, 1960, is recorded from India.

Species reported as causing damage to economically important plants in Hyderabad are : Hoplolaimus seinhorsti Luc, 1958, parasitic in cauliflower; Pratylenchus thornei Sher and Allen, 1953, parasitic in maize and Rotylenchulus reniformis Linford and Oliveira, 1940, parasitic in grape vines.

Gnathostoma turgidum is a nematode parasite that exploits the stomach of Virginian opossums, Didelphis virginiana, in Latin America. The opossum is the definitive host of G. turgidum in the wild. Intrahepatic growth and maturation of the parasite, subsequent migration to the stomach and spontaneous expulsion are common. However, the histopathological lesions caused by G. turgidum are poorly described. A better understanding of the life cycle of this parasite and the pathological changes in natural host–parasite interactions could help to clarify the progression of human infections caused by Gnathostoma binucleatum. The aim of this work was to study morphological changes in the liver and stomach of D. virginiana during natural infection and adult worm expulsion. Three opossums naturally infected with G. turgidum were captured from an endemic area of gnathostomosis. Three uninfected opossums captured from a non-endemic area were used as controls. The opossums were sacrificed at different stages of infection (March, May and December), and a histopathological study of their livers and stomachs was conducted. Injuries in livers were observed by histopathology – areas of necrosis and collagen septa were identified. Parasites caused nodules with necrosis on the periphery of lesions, and collagen fibres were also observed in stomachs. Collagen septa may be caused by antigenic remains of the parasite. Further immunological studies are necessary to verify that stimulation is caused by these factors.

A Fasciola hepatica tegument antigen preparation was obtained from intact adult worms by solubilization with a non-ionic detergent, Nonident P-40. This antigen preparation contains antigens useful for the serodiagnosis of infection with this parasite. However, the antigen preparation is inadequate for use in the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The present work demonstrates that fractionation by demulsification of this antigen preparation with ammonium sulphate results in a soluble aqueous phase which contains F. hepatica serodiagnostic antigens which can then be applied to the ELISA. This F. hepatica tegument antigen preparation when used m the ELISA can detect rabbit fascioliasis two weeks after infection, with antibody levels peaking by 10 to 12 weeks of infection.

Schistosoma mansoni causes intestinal schistosomiasis, a disease that is prevalent in several regions worldwide. To date, a protective vaccine against S. mansoni is still lacking. Several promising antigens have been discovered and evaluated for vaccine protection, such as Sm14 and Sm28GST. In this short communication, we report the successful detection of an alternatively spliced truncated form of Sm14 which was highly expressed in an Egyptian strain of S. mansoni. This truncated Sm14 (TrSm14) protein was formerly reported to be practically non-existent and its complementary DNA (cDNA) was thought to be ‘a rare misprocessing of mRNA precursor’. Our finding demonstrates that there is inter-strain variation in the S. mansoni transcriptome and subsequently in the role/function of the expressed proteins. We expressed TrSm14 successfully in Escherichia coli as a fusion protein with the schistosomal antigen Sm28GST. The fusion protein was purified using metal affinity chromatography and was found to be reactive with serum from S. mansoni-infected patients. This suggests a possible diagnostic value for this protein in detection of anti-schistosomal antibodies. In addition, this fusion protein could offer a potential bivalent vaccine candidate against S. mansoni that is worthy of further investigation.

To investigate the prevalence of canine and feline hookworms in South China, and to assess the risk of zoonotic hookworms to humans, one pair of primers (HRM-F/HRM-R) was designed to establish a high-resolution melting (HRM) method based on internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS-1) rDNA for the detection of Ancylostoma ceylanicum, A. caninum and A. tubaeforme infection. The results showed that the HRM for the three hookworms produced different melting-curve profiles, where melting temperature (Tm) values were 84.50°C for A. ceylanicum, 82.25°C for A. caninum and 81.73°C for A. tubaeforme, respectively. The reproducibility of intra- and inter-assay melting curves was almost perfect. The lowest concentration detected was about 5.69 ×10−4 g/μl. The HRM detection results from 18 canine and feline hookworm samples were in complete accordance with their sequencing results. The HRM method was more sensitive than the polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) technique in the detection of 98 clinical samples. It is concluded that the HRM method can differentiate between A. ceylanicum, A. caninum, A. tubaeforme and their mixed infections, which may provide important technical support for the zoonotic risk assessment and molecular epidemiological survey of canine and feline hookworms.

The Didymozoidae (Trematoda: Hemiuroidea) is among the most speciose trematode families, known from a wide range of marine teleost fishes. Despite their richness, however, didymozoid life cycles are unusually poorly known; only two first intermediate hosts are known, a marine bivalve (Anadara trapezia) and a pelagic gastropod (Firoloida desmarestia). This study uses multi-locus molecular sequence data to identify a novel first intermediate host for the family, a sessile gastropod of the genus Thylacodes Guettard (Vermetidae). The didymozoid infection is not identified to species but, based on molecular phylogenetic analyses, it is close to Saccularina magnacetabula Louvard et al., 2022, which uses a bivalve as a first intermediate host. The distribution of known first intermediate hosts of didymozoids (a bivalve, a holoplanktonic gastropod and a sessile gastropod that feeds with the use of mucus nets) suggests that first intermediate host use within the Didymozoidae has been opportunistically driven by the trophic ecology of potential mollusc hosts and has involved significant host-switching events.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the combined use of different chemical (albendazole, ivermectin, glycerine and Vaseline) and biological (Monacrosporium thaumasium) compounds in the control of Ancylostoma caninum. Infective larvae of A. caninum were obtained from coprocultures of positive faeces from naturally infected dogs. We used 1% ivermectin, 1% albendazole, 100% glycerine, 100% Vaseline and an isolate of the nematophagous fungus M. thaumasium (NF34), alone or in combinations. Next, an experimental test was set up with 16 groups in microtubes, with a 24-h interaction. The groups (G1 to G15) that contained any chemical or biological compound (NF34) and/or their combined use (chemical + biological) showed a difference in relation to the control group, except G5 – Vaseline 100% without combinations. It was concluded that, even on an experimental basis, the combined use of anthelmintic drugs with biological control was efficient; however, more studies must be carried out in order to elucidate the synergistic action between chemical and biological compounds to be used in the effective control of hookworms in the future.
