Studies were made of the fate of irradiated cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni, during their migration as schistosomula in the definitive host, by direct recovery of intact schistosomula from the skin and lungs and of adult worms from the liver of infected mice. Gamma radiation (6000 r) inhibited the migration and maturation of S. mansoni schistosomula to the adult stage. Penetration of irradiated cercariae into host skin proceeded normally and the first site of damage was in the lungs, but the majority of irradiated schistosomula were probably destroyed in the liver. The efiects of gamma radiation compared with those of ultra-violet radiation on cercariae of S. mansoni are discussed.

Lyophilized eggs of Schistosoma mansoni, when incubated briefly with serum from infected mice, bind antibodies, as made evident by subsequent binding of flurorescein labelled anti-IgG or 125 I-labelled protein A. On the basis of these findings, a radioimmunoassay was devised which employs whole lyophilized eggs (500 or 250 eggs/serum sample) as antigenic particles and 125 I-labelled protein A as a probe for antibody binding. Only 10 μl of serum are required to obtain 90% of the maximal binding. Kinetic studies indicated that 70% of the maximal seropositivity develops in mice between five and six weeks after a light infection, reaches a maximum at eight weeks and fluctuates around a high plateau thereafter. Pre-incubation of the test serum with soluble egg antigen (sea) considerably inhibits antibody binding to the eggs, suggesting that SEA-like antigens participate in the reaction.

Part of the cestode fauna of ten hyraxes captured in Kenya was studied.

The species of hyrax were Procavia habessinica Hemprich and Ehrenberg and Heterohyrax syriacus Schreber.

One hundred and five cestodes were fixed, stained, mounted and examined. Descriptions of specimens, including measurements, are recorded in text and figures.

1. The influence of diets having different protein values on the schistosomicidal effect of Ambilhar has been investigated in mice.

2. Mice placed on these diets throughout the period of infection and then treated, reached differently. Low protein diets produced fewer and smaller worms which were more susceptible to the drug.

3. Mice maintained on an adequate diet were shifted to diets of varying protein values a few days before treatment. In these, drug treatment was more satisfactory in animals fed the high protein regimen.

4. Female worms were more affected by drug treatment than the males.

Collyricloides massanae (Trematoda: Collyriclidae) is described from cysts in the wall of the small intestine of a starling (Sturnus vulgaris L.) in the Netherlands. The original description was from a yellow necked mouse, Apodemus flavicollis (Melchior), so this is the first record of this species in birds.

The difference in the final shape of the cyst of H. rostochiensis and H. schachtii is shown to be due to patterns of growth during cyst development. The greatest change of form takes place during the first 6 days for H. rostochiensis and the first 12 days for H. schachtii. The principal difference between the cyst shape in the two species is due to the greater increase in length in relation to breadth of the growing H. schachtii cyst. Premature tanning, due to environmental factors, is shown to affect final cyst form.

The normal ultrastructure of the abomasal fundic glands in sheep is described and compared with those of sheep infected experimentally with T. axei. Alterations were observed in mucous, mucous neck and zymogen cells and the results are compared with a similar study in normal and infected calves.

The aims of the present study were to identify and describe the occurrence of nematode parasites in the gonads of bluefish Pomatomus saltatrix from off the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Only females were found to be parasitized by the nematodes, which were identified as P. saltatrix using morphological, morphometric and molecular data. Infection of female bluefish by this nematode had the following values: prevalence, 48.7%; mean intensity, 2.6; mean abundance, 1.3; and range of infection, 1–10 specimens. Histopathological examination of transverse and longitudinal sections of the parasitized ovaries showed nematodes at different stages of development among oocytes, but no indication of any associated inflammatory reaction. The presence of nematodes in the ovaries of bluefish is an important indication of fish hygiene, and parasitized fish are usually rejected by consumers because of their repugnant appearance.

This study aimed to prospectively evaluate the risk factors of infection by Aelurostrongylus abstrusus in Brazilian cats with cough and/or radiographic changes, using as diagnostic tools the Baermann method (BM), polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of feces, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and cytology. Forty-three cats that were presented with cough or lung radiographic abnormalities compatible with bronchoalveolar disease were included in the study. After clinical evaluation, feces samples were collected to investigate lungworm parasitism through BM and PCR. BALF was performed to provide samples for cytology, bacteriology, and fungal culture. Stool PCR was considered the gold standard for diagnosis tests, and the other methods were evaluated by their agreement. PCR presented 74% (32/43) of positivity for A. abstrusus, while in the BM, 41% (18/43) were positive. BM showed sensitivity of 56.25% and specificity of 100% when compared with PCR. No larva was found in the cytological evaluation of 21 BALF samples. Lungworm is an important cause of bronchopulmonary disease in domestic cats in Brazil and should be included as a differential diagnosis when a cat is presented with cough or radiographic abnormalities. BM is a sensitive, non-invasive, and cheap technique to diagnose the disease, but it is not as sensitive as PCR.

The female reproductive system of Thelazia lacrymalis (Nematoda: Thelaziidae) was investigated by light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with regard to the developmental stages and the stage deposited by the gravid nematode. Female T. lacrymalis have a didelphic and opisthodelphic type of reproductive system with paired ovaries, oviducts and uteri and a single vagina and vulva. Round and spindle-shaped primary oocytes are documented within the ovaries and oviducts, respectively. The distal part of each uterus provides a fertilization chamber filled with spermatozoa, followed by a sphincter-like part. Further anterior, the uteri broaden gradually containing dividing zygotes, small and large morulae, tadpole-stage embryos and horseshoe-shaped embryos which increase in length and become slimmer forming pretzel-stage embryos and larvae rolled up. The larvae stretch gradually and finally lie straight but still covered with their egg membrane in the vagina. The egg membrane encloses the whole larva and is enlarged at the pointed tail of the larva forming a bulb. At the SEM level, the first-stage larva is shown to have a terminal mouth and three hooks directed posteriorly and a striated cuticle. As morphologically identical larvae were also found in lavages of the conjunctival sac of horses infected with T. lacrymalis, this nematode species can be described as ovoviviparous.

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) are closely associated with Popillia japonica and potentially used as their biological control agents, although field results proved inconsistent and evoked a continual pursuit of native EPNs more adapted to the environment. Therefore, we surveyed the Azorean Archipelago to isolate new strains of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora and to evaluate their virulence against the model organism Galleria mellonella under laboratory conditions. Six strains were obtained from pasture and coastal environments and both nematode and symbiont bacteria were molecularly identified. The bioassays revealed that Az172, Az186, and Az171 presented high virulence across the determination of a lethal dose (LD50) and short exposure time experiments with a comparable performance to Az29. After 72 hours, these virulent strains presented a mean determination of a lethal dose of 11 infective juveniles cm-2, a lethal time (LT50) of 34 hours, and achieved 40% mortality after an initial exposure time of only 60 minutes. Az170 exhibited an intermediate performance, whereas Az179 and Az180 were classified as low virulent strains. However, both strains presented the highest reproductive potential with means of 1700 infective juveniles/mg of larvae. The bioassays of the native EPNs obtained revealed that these strains hold the potential to be used in biological control initiatives targeting P. japonica because of their high virulence and locally adapted to environmental conditions.

Although the efficacy of triclabendazole treatment against Fasciola gigantica has been shown before in cattle and buffaloes, there appears to be no published report on the efficacy of triclabendazole in impala or other antelope species. As part of a health monitoring programme at Mulungushi International Conference Centre, Lusaka, Zambia, a coprological examination was undertaken to investigate the helminthological status of captive impala (Aepyceros melampus). Of 39 fresh coprological samples, 46% contained F. gigantica. The source of infection was identified to be a fountain within the grounds of the conference centre. Lymnaea natalensis, collected from the study site, were induced to shed cercariae, and were thus confirmed as the snail intermediate host. In managing this disease, triclabendazole at 6 mg/kg was administered together with the feed bait. Water from the pond was drained; vegetation within it cleared and the pond allowed to dry for 1 week before water was replaced. Three weeks post-treatment, faecal examination revealed that the Fasciola had been cleared. To the best of our knowledge, this is a first case of Fasciola spp. infection reported in captive wild impala in Zambia and provides evidence that triclabendazole may be delivered to free-ranging antelope using medicated bait.

Hookworms of the genus Uncinaria parasitize pinniped pups in various locations worldwide. Four species have been described, two of which parasitize pinniped pups in the southern hemisphere: Uncinaria hamiltoni parasitizes Otaria flavescens and Arctocephalus australis from the South American coast, and Uncinaria sanguinis parasitizes Neophoca cinerea from the Australian coast. However, their geographical ranges and host specificity are unknown. Uncinaria spp. are morphologically similar, but molecular analyses have allowed the recognition of new species in the genus Uncinaria. We used nuclear genetic markers (internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit (LSU) rDNA) and a mitochondrial genetic marker (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI)) to evaluate the phylogenetic relationships of Uncinaria spp. parasitizing A. australis and O. flavescens from South American coasts (Atlantic and Pacific coasts). We compared our sequences with published Uncinaria sequences. A Generalized Mixed Yule Coalescent (GMYC) analysis was also used to delimit species, and principal component analysis was used to compare morphometry among Uncinaria specimens. Parasites were sampled from A. australis from Peru (12°S), southern Chile (42°S), and the Uruguayan coast, and from O. flavescens from northern Chile (24°S) and the Uruguayan coast. Morphometric differences were observed between Uncinaria specimens from both South American coasts and between Uncinaria specimens from A. australis in Peru and southern Chile. Phylogenetic and GMYC analyses suggest that south-eastern Pacific otariid species harbour U. hamiltoni and an undescribed putative species of Uncinaria. However, more samples from A. australis and O. flavescens are necessary to understand the phylogenetic patterns of Uncinaria spp. across the South Pacific.

White grubs are root feeding larvae of beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) that are sporadic pests in agriculture and can lead to economic damage. The grubs feed on the roots of plants, while the adult beetle can bore into underground stems, as well as cause defoliation of plants. Sporadic incidence of larvae with symptoms of nematode infections were detected in wattle and sugarcane plantations in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. The larvae with infection symptoms were isolated, washed, and put on water traps to collect infective juveniles of possible nematode infections. Three species of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) were isolated from the white grub larvae. These included Steinernema bertusi isolated from Maladera sp. 4., Oscheius myriophila from Maladera sp. 4 and Schizonchya affinis, and Steinernema fabii isolated from Maladera sp. 4., Pegylis sommeri, and S. affinis. Of these S. fabii was the most common species in the sample (87%). This is the first report of such a high diversity of locally occurring EPNs found naturally associated with white grub species in this region of South Africa.

Allocreadium sudanensis sp. nov. is described from a cyprinid fish (Barbus bynni) from the White Nile in the Sudan. The new species is compared with other related species of Allocreadium.

A key for identification of five African species of the genus Allocreadium is given.

The present material was collected by the senior author in January, 1969 from the intestine of a cyprinid fish, Barbus bynni (Forskal), caught from the White Nile at Rabag near Kosti (about 200 miles to the south of Khartoum) in the Sudan. Eighteen trematodes, collected from a single infected fish, were fixed in hot 70% alcohol. Examination of these specimens in whole mounts stained in aceto-alum carmine and in sectioned material revealed that they belong to a hitherto unknown species of trematodes belonging to the genus Allocreadium, Looss (1900) which is described here as Allocreadium sudanensis sp.

Breinlia mackerrasae n.sp. is described from the short-nosed bandicoot Isoodon macrourus. It bears most similarity to B. dentifera, but differs in having larger spicules and in the arrangement of the anal papillae. Female worms from a ‘mumut’ (Peramelidae) are described, but as no males are available, their taxonomic status remains uncertain. These are the first records of Breinlia from peramelid marsupials.

Four samples of trematode parasites were collected from imported Abdim's storks at the Zoological gardens “Artis”, Amsterdam. The first collection was made during autopsy of a bird that had been in “Artis” for several years; some months later, the parasites were discovered in the oesophagus and mouth cavity of birds that were imported from Africa only recently. Ultimately, a number of trematodes belonging to the same species have been scraped out of the mouth cavities of 5 living Abdim's storks. My thanks are due to Mr. P. Schistosomiasis is the second major parasitic disease in the world after malaria. It affects 201.5 million cases in Africa alone. The aim of this research was to explore alternative vaccination strategies against experimental schistosomiasis mansoni. We assessed the effect of cercarial transformation fluid (CTF) singly and in combination with crude cercarial antigen (CCA) using alum as an adjuvant. The combined antigens gave the best results, as evidenced by a significant reduction in the worm load (62.07%), tissue egg count (78.16%, 86.46%) in liver and intestine respectively, and hepatic granuloma size (29.96%). Scanning electron microscopy revealed changes in the tegument, in the form of roughness and appearance of vesicles and furrows between the tegumental tubercles. Also, resorption of the ventral sucker and dimples replacing its spines were observed. The female tegument was irregular and its posterior end showed loss of spines and sensory bulbs. Moreover, there was a significant decrease in liver enzymes (alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST)) compared to infected control mice. A significant elevation in CD4+T-lymphocytes, denoting amelioration of the immune status, in mice that received combined antigens was also observed. It can be concluded that combined antigens demonstrate potential as a vaccine against Schistosoma mansoni.
