Two strains of laboratory white mice, CFLP and LACA, were infected with the metacestodes of Taenia crassiceps. The serum from each infected mouse was tested for antibodies on double-diffusion gel plates and the number of antigen-antibody precipitin lines formed related (a) to the duration of the infection and (b) to the volume of metacestodes. There was a significant increase in the number of antigen-antibody precipitins with regard to the time infected but not to the volume of metacestodes. The pattern of development of the antigen-antibody precipitation system was also examined.

A brief redescription is given of Pulmostrongylus herpestis (Khera, 1956) recovered from the pleural cavity of a mongoose, Herpestes sp. from Suva, Fiji. The genus Herpestostrongylns Khera, 1956 is shown to be untenable and placed as a synonym of Puhnostrongylus Hsu, 1935. The genus Acanthoxynema Khera, 1956 is shown to be a synonym of Skrjabinema Vereshchagin, 1926; and the genus Papillosclerus Khera, 1956, a synonym of Metathelazia Skinker, 1931. and its subfamily Osleriinae Khera, 1956 is supressed.

An account is given of observations on the occurrence of nematodes of the genus Meloidogyne in the Gold Coast. It includes a list of seventy-six host plants, both cultivated and wild, suitable for the sustenance and multiplication of the parasites as well as comments on the reactions of these various plant species to invasions of their root tissues. Many of the host plants listed constitute new records and the data submitted point to the conclusion that the root-knot eelworm has been long established in the Gold Coast.

The genus Galebiella Basir, 1941, has been recorded from Hydrous aculeatus Sol. (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae) in the U.A.R. Female nematodes only were found, in the hindgut of the adult beetles.

Worms were especially abundant close to the pyloric valve and were found free in the gut lumen; a few of them were loosely attached to the gut wall.

The reaction of the hind- and midgut was almost the same yet the infection was restricted to the hindgut.

In many cases of infection the peritrophic membrane in the hindgut region became fragmented into longitudinal fibres. The intima, epithelium and muscle layers showed no changes at all.

Schizorchis arfaai sp. n. is described from the wood-mouse in the Caspian area of Iran and its morphological characteristics compared with those of the five previously known species of Schizorchis Hansen, 1948.

Eighteen of 56 (32.1%) wild Rana limnocharis from central and south Taiwan were found to contain plerocercoids of Spirometra erinaceieuropaei. This is the first report of S. erinaceieuropaei infections in frogs in Taiwan, with the plerocercoids being recovered from the thigh and back muscles or under the skin. Other species of frogs examined, including nine wild R. latouchii, one wild Buergeria robustus and 110 cultured R. rugulosa were free of infection. The plerocercoids were orally inoculated into four cats; three of which were each given a single plerocercoid and one a dose of three plerocercoids. Daily faecal examination showed that two cats started shedding eggs of S. erinaceieuropaei on day 8 postinfection (PI) and the other two on day 10 PI. The highest eggs per gram and eggs per day for a single worm was found to be 428,000 and 14,416,000 respectively. Only the cat inoculated with three plerocercoids shed proglottids in its faeces during the 2 month observation period.

An immature parafilarial worm recovered from the anterior chamber of the eye of a buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) is described. On the basis of characteristic cuticular ornamentation at the anterior extremity, an undivided short oesophagus and unequal spicules, the specimen has been identified tentatively as a male juvenile of Parafilaria bovicola. This is the first record for P. bovicola as an accidental infection of the eye of a buffalo.

The life history of Olveria indica was worked out experimentally at Lucknow. Gyraulus convexiusculus was shown to be the intermediate host. The various stages in the larval development are described in detail.

One new species from Qinghai Province, China, Labronemella major n. sp., is described. The new species is characterized by a body length of 3.03–3.34 mm; lip region wide, offset by a distinct depression, disc-like with six separated inner liplets; amphid fovea funnel-shaped, distinctly bulged on body surface in scanning electron micrographs; odontostyle long (35–39 μm) with distinct lumen, aperture about 39–47% of its length; odontophore rod-like and long; guiding ring double; pharyngeal basal expansion about half of the total neck length; uterus relatively long and tripartite; vulva transverse and sclerotized; spicules 81–90 μm long; ventromedial supplements 19–23; tail short, rounded to conoid. It can be differentiated from all other species of the genus by its relatively longer body, odontostyle and spicules, and wider lip region. Due to the lip region being offset by a deep constriction, and the long (three or more times the body diameter at mid-body) tripartite uterus, the new species is close to Labronemella czernowitzensis (Micoletzky, 1922) Andrássy, 2002 and Labronemella labiata Andrássy, 1985. An improved key to the genus including the new species is provided.

Different groups of mice were infected with various single or repeated doses of larvae of Ancylostoma caninum. Considerable loss of larvae occurred in the immunised groups when compared with their counterpart unimmunised groups. Larval migration and distribution in the different tissues was less in immunised mice, as most larvae were expelled from the gastrointestinal tract. This resulted in a poor onward larval migration to liver, lungs, brain and muscle regions in immunised groups. The heavily immunised group infected five times was most affected and a significant lesser larval distribution in various organs and muscle region observed.

A larvoscopic examination of faeces collected from localities inhabited by chamois in the Tatra National Park (TANAP) in 1997 demonstrated the presence of the lung nematodes Muellerius spp. (likely to be M. tenuispiculatus and M. capillaris) and Neostrongylus linearis. The overall prevalence of lung nematodes in chamois herds in TANAP was 48.4% with prevalences of 45.6% and 11.9% for Muellerius spp. and N. linearis, respectively. No significant differences in lung nematode prevalences were observed in the biotopes of TANAP with prevalence values of 44.9% being recorded in the High Tatras and 58.5% in the Belianske Tatras. Individual species were in equal proportion in both biotopes, although N. linearis was significantly less prevalent (11.2–13.8%). The prevalence of lung nematodes in the High Tatras varied from 25.0 to 84.2% within individual localities, while in the Belianske Tatras it was more proportionate (50.0–85.7%). In the High Tatras, the prevalence of lung nematodes in the chamois herds peaked during August, declining to its lowest in October. A similar prevalence was also recorded for Muellerius species, while the minimum prevalence of N. linearis was found in July. In the Belianske Tatras, the prevalence of lung nematodes including both species of Muellerius peaked in July and gradually decreased until October. On the other hand, N. linearis was most prevalent in October. The mean L1 count per gram faeces was low (7.6 ± 13.2 larvae g-1).

A new species, Hymenolepis miniopteri is described. The specimens studied were recovered from the ileum of the bat, Miniopterus blepotis (Temminck, 1840) from South Queensland.

A new echinostome fluke Pameileenia gambiensis gen. et sp. nov. is described from a water snake Grayia tholloni from Gambia. A note on the distribution of the host is included since this is the first record of it from the Senegambia region.

A morphological study of adult liver flukes and eggs from sheep in a human fascioliasis endemic zone in the Northern Bolivian Altiplano showed that they belong to the species Fasciola hepatica. An exhaustive morphometric comparison with a F. hepatica population from Spanish sheep was made using image analysis and an allometric model: (y2m - y2)]#x002F;y2 = c[(y1m - y1)/y1]b, where y1 = body surface or body length, y2 = one of the measurements analysed, y1m, y2m = maximum values towards which y1 and y2 respectively tend, and c, b = constants. Only slight allometric differences in worms were observed despite the geographic distance between both Spanish and Bolivian sheep populations and the very high altitude of the Bolivian Altiplano.

Two new species of diplectanid monogeneans, Diplectanum grouperi and Pseudorhabdosynochus coioidesis from the marine finfish Epinephelus coioides and E. aerolatus(Serranidae), cultured in floating cages in Malaysia, Indonesia and Hong Kong, were described and compared with P. lantauensis Beverley-Burton and Suriano, 1981 from the same hosts. There is no other close species sharing the features of Diplectanum grouperi. The possession of a copulatory organ with an open cup-like proximal part and a narrow tubular distal part is a main distinguished feature of D. grouperi. Pseudorhabdosynochus coioides is most closely related to P. epinepheli Yamaguti, 1938, but can be distinguished from it by the shape and the size of the haptor, hamuli, copulatory organ, the lack of a muscular bulbus ejaculatorius, a greater number of rows in the squamodiscs and the location of the testis. Pseudorhabdosynochus lantauensis from the present hosts differs from that described from the original hosts, Epinephelus brunneus and E. fario in the shape of the dorsal bar and vagina.

Seventy female lambs (6–7 months old) which were exposed to natural infections of Haemonchus contortus were designated as responders or non-responders on the basis of 10 weekly cumulative faecal egg counts. Selected responder and non-responder lambs were treated with ivermectin, housed separately and 6 weeks post-housing, seven lambs from each group were given a trickle infection of Haemonchus contortus at 1000 L3 daily for 5 days per week up to 2 weeks and examined weekly for 10 weeks after first infection. Analysis of data revealed significantly lower mean faecal egg counts and non-significantly less weight loss in responder than non-responder lambs. Mean values of haemoglobin, packed cell volume, total serum protein and peripheral eosinophil counts were significantly higher in responders than non-responders. In contrast, serum pepsinogen concentration was significantly less in responders than in non-responders. At 10 weeks post-infection, there were fewer pathological lesions and significantly lower worm burdens in responders than in non-responders. These results demonstrate a distinct resistance in responders to Haemonchus contortus infection.

This paper reports the occurrence of Skrjabinema ovis and Trichostrongylus spp. not previously identified in sheep and goats in Iran. A complete list of the helminth parasites now known to exist in sheep and goats in Iran is included in the discussion.

An examination of the type material of Dibothriocephalus medius Fahmy, 1954, was made possible by the kind co-operation of Professor Swann of the Zoology Dept., Universityof Edinburgh, where the specimens are lodged.

The family Deletrocephalidae consists of three species, from two genera: Deletrocephalus dimidiatus, D. cesarpintoi and Paradeletrocephalus minor, which differ from one another in terms of the buccal capsule structure, the dorsal ray from the male copulatory bursa and the length of the vagina in the female. All these species are parasites of the gastrointestinal tract of the rhea, Rhea americana. Only D. dimidiatus was reported to be a parasite of the other rhea species, Darwin's rhea, R. pennata. Currently, there are no studies on the ultrastructure and biology of these parasites or their pathogenicity in these birds. Thus, the present study aimed to examine the ultrastructure and add more details of the morphology of D. dimidiatus from R. americana. Four adult rheas were necropsied, and the gastrointestinal tract was collected and examined for the presence of parasites. Nematodes were analysed by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). All birds were parasitized by D. dimidiatus. Some morphological and morphometric characters were observed that differ from reports of other studies of this species by other authors. In addition, new details were added, well described by SEM, and a key to the species of the subfamily Deletrocephalinae is given.
