Abstract

Abstract

This article proposes a critical genealogy of the Brazilian dramatic trilogy composed of the tragedy Orfeu da Conceição (1956) by Vinicius de Moraes; the film Orfeu negro (1959), directed by Marcel Camus; and the film Orfeu (1999), directed by Carlos Diegues. Through a comparative analysis of the creative processes of these works and their multiple ideological and historical links, the article shows how the old Greek myth of Orpheus reconfigures its mythical character in the theatrical arts of twentieth-century Brazil. I thus outline a trajectory that traverses theater and cinema, jazz and bossa nova, and show business and discussions of identity, moving throughout the territories and languages of Brazil, France, and the United States. I conclude with a summary of these processes that both refers back to the elements of the Orphic myth as discussed in the introduction and also situates them in a broader reflection on mythography.
