We discuss the complexity of completions of partial combinatory algebras, in particular, of Kleene’s first model. Various completions of this model exist in the literature, but all of them have high complexity. We show that although there are no computable completions, there exist completions of low Turing degree. We use this construction to relate completions of Kleene’s first model to complete extensions of $\mathrm{PA}$. We also discuss the complexity of pcas defined from nonstandard models of $\mathrm{PA}$.

We give a brief overview of the special issue of MSCS “Advances in Homotopy Type Theory.”

We give an adequate, concrete, categorical-based model for Lambda-${\mathcal S}$, which is a typed version of a linear-algebraic lambda calculus, extended with measurements. Lambda-${\mathcal S}$ is an extension to first-order lambda calculus unifying two approaches of non-cloning in quantum lambda-calculi: to forbid duplication of variables and to consider all lambda-terms as algebraic linear functions. The type system of Lambda-${\mathcal S}$ has a superposition constructor S such that a type A is considered as the base of a vector space, while SA is its span. Our model considers S as the composition of two functors in an adjunction relation between the category of sets and the category of vector spaces over $\mathbb C$. The right adjoint is a forgetful functor U, which is hidden in the language, and plays a central role in the computational reasoning.

Modal logic enjoys topological semantics that may be traced back to McKinsey and Tarski, and the classification of topological spaces via modal axioms is a lively area of research. In the past two decades, there has been interest in extending topological modal logic to the language of the mu-calculus, but previously no class of topological spaces was known to be mu-calculus definable that was not already modally definable. In this paper, we show that the full mu-calculus is indeed more expressive than standard modal logic, in the sense that there are classes of topological spaces (and weakly transitive Kripke frames), which are mu-definable but not modally definable. The classes we exhibit satisfy a modally definable property outside of their perfect core, and thus we dub them imperfect spaces. We show that the mu-calculus is sound and complete for these classes. Our examples are minimal in the sense that they use a single instance of a greatest fixed point, and we show that least fixed points alone do not suffice to define any class of spaces that is not already modally definable.

Consider a locally cartesian closed category with an object $\mathbb{I}$ and a class of trivial fibrations, which admit sections and are stable under pushforward and retract as arrows. Define the fibrations to be those maps whose Leibniz exponential with the generic point of $\mathbb{I}$ defines a trivial fibration. Then the fibrations are also closed under pushforward.

Alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) receives much attention in the field of optimization and computer science, etc. The generalized ADMM (G-ADMM) proposed by Eckstein and Bertsekas incorporates an acceleration factor and is more efficient than the original ADMM. However, G-ADMM is not applicable in some models where the objective function value (or its gradient) is computationally costly or even impossible to compute. In this paper, we consider the two-block separable convex optimization problem with linear constraints, where only noisy estimations of the gradient of the objective function are accessible. Under this setting, we propose a stochastic linearized generalized ADMM (called SLG-ADMM) where two subproblems are approximated by some linearization strategies. And in theory, we analyze the expected convergence rates and large deviation properties of SLG-ADMM. In particular, we show that the worst-case expected convergence rates of SLG-ADMM are $\mathcal{O}\left( {{N}^{-1/2}}\right)$ and $\mathcal{O}\left({\ln N} \cdot {N}^{-1}\right)$ for solving general convex and strongly convex problems, respectively, where N is the iteration number, similarly hereinafter, and with high probability, SLG-ADMM has $\mathcal{O}\left ( \ln N \cdot N^{-1/2} \right ) $ and $\mathcal{O}\left ( \left ( \ln N \right )^{2} \cdot N^{-1} \right ) $ constraint violation bounds and objective error bounds for general convex and strongly convex problems, respectively.

We give a simple, direct, and reusable logical relations technique for languages with term and type recursion and partially defined differentiable functions. We demonstrate it by working out the case of automatic differentiation (AD) correctness: namely, we present a correctness proof of a dual numbers style AD code transformation for realistic functional languages in the ML-family. We also show how this code transformation provides us with correct forward- and reverse-mode AD.

The starting point is to interpret a functional programming language as a suitable freely generated categorical structure. In this setting, by the universal property of the syntactic categorical structure, the dual numbers AD code transformation and the basic $\boldsymbol{\omega } \mathbf{Cpo}$-semantics arise as structure preserving functors. The proof follows, then, by a novel logical relations argument.

The key to much of our contribution is a powerful monadic logical relations technique for term recursion and recursive types. It provides us with a semantic correctness proof based on a simple approach for denotational semantics, making use only of the very basic concrete model of $\omega$-cpos.

In this paper, we present a constructive and proof-relevant development of graph theory, including the notion of maps, their faces and maps of graphs embedded in the sphere, in homotopy type theory (HoTT). This allows us to provide an elementary characterisation of planarity for locally directed finite and connected multigraphs that takes inspiration from topological graph theory, particularly from combinatorial embeddings of graphs into surfaces. A graph is planar if it has a map and an outer face with which any walk in the embedded graph is walk-homotopic to another. A result is that this type of planar maps forms a homotopy set for a graph. As a way to construct examples of planar graphs inductively, extensions of planar maps are introduced. We formalise the essential parts of this work in the proof assistant Agda with support for HoTT.

Although reasoning about equations over strings has been extensively studied for several decades, little research has been done for equational reasoning on general clauses over strings. This paper introduces a new superposition calculus with strings and present an equational theorem proving framework for clauses over strings. It provides a saturation procedure for clauses over strings and show that the proposed superposition calculus with contraction rules is refutationally complete. In particular, this paper presents a new decision procedure for solving word problems over strings and provides a new method of solving unification problems over strings w.r.t. a set of conditional equations R over strings if R can be finitely saturated under the proposed inference system with contraction rules.

We present an adapted construction of algebraic circuits over the reals introduced by Cucker and Meer to arbitrary infinite integral domains and generalize the $\mathrm{AC}_{\mathbb{R}}$ and $\mathrm{NC}_{\mathbb{R}}^{}$ classes for this setting. We give a theorem in the style of Immerman’s theorem which shows that for these adapted formalisms, sets decided by circuits of constant depth and polynomial size are the same as sets definable by a suitable adaptation of first-order logic. Additionally, we discuss a generalization of the guarded predicative logic by Durand, Haak and Vollmer, and we show characterizations for the $\mathrm{AC}_{R}$ and $\mathrm{NC}_R^{}$ hierarchy. Those generalizations apply to the Boolean $\mathrm{AC}$ and $\mathrm{NC}$ hierarchies as well. Furthermore, we introduce a formalism to be able to compare some of the aforementioned complexity classes with different underlying integral domains.

Monads prove to be useful mathematical tools in theoretical computer science, notably in denoting different effects of programming languages. In this paper, we investigate a type of monads which arise naturally from Keimel and Lawson’s $\mathbf{K}$-ification.

A subcategory of $\mathbf{TOP}_{\mathbf{0}}$ is called of type $\mathrm{K}^{*}$ if it consists of monotone convergence spaces and is of type $\mathrm K$ in the sense of Keimel and Lawson. Each such category induces a canonical monad $\mathcal K$ on the category $\mathbf{DCPO}$ of dcpos and Scott-continuous maps, which is called the order-$\mathbf{K}$-ification monad in this paper. First, for each category of type $\mathrm{K}^{*}$, we characterize the algebras of the corresponding monad $\mathcal K$ as k-complete posets and algebraic homomorphisms as k-continuous maps, from which we obtain that the order-$\mathbf{K}$-ification monad gives the free k-complete poset construction over the category $\mathbf{POS}_{\mathbf{d}}$ of posets and Scott-continuous maps. In addition, we show that all k-complete posets and Scott-continuous maps form a Cartesian closed category. Moreover, we consider the strongness of the order-K-ification monad and conclude with the fact that each order-K-ification monad is always commutative.

We take another look at the construction by Hofmann and Streicher of a universe $(U,{\mathcal{E}l})$ for the interpretation of Martin-Löf type theory in a presheaf category $[{{{\mathbb{C}}}^{\textrm{op}}},\textsf{Set}]$. It turns out that $(U,{\mathcal{E}l})$ can be described as the nerve of the classifier $\dot{{\textsf{Set}}}^{\textsf{op}} \rightarrow{{\textsf{Set}}}^{\textsf{op}}$ for discrete fibrations in $\textsf{Cat}$, where the nerve functor is right adjoint to the so-called “Grothendieck construction” taking a presheaf $P :{{{\mathbb{C}}}^{\textrm{op}}}\rightarrow{\textsf{Set}}$ to its category of elements $\int _{\mathbb{C}} P$. We also consider change of base for such universes, as well as universes of structured families, such as fibrations.

The authors’ primary goal in this paper is to enhance the study of $T_0$ topological spaces by using the order of specialization of a $T_0$-space to introduce the lower topology (with a subbasis of closed sets $\mathord{\uparrow } x$) and studying the interaction of the original topology and the lower topology. Using the lower topology, one can define and study new properties of the original space that provide deeper insight into its structure. One focus of study is the property R, which asserts that if the intersection of a family of finitely generated sets $\mathord{\uparrow } F$, $F$ finite, is contained in an open set $U$, then the same is true for finitely many of the family. We first show that property R is equivalent to several other interesting properties, for example, the property that all closed subsets of the original space are compact in the lower topology. We then find conditions under which these spaces are compact, well-filtered, and coherent, a weaker variant of stably compact spaces. We also investigate what have been called strong $d$-spaces, develop some of their basic properties, and make connections with the earlier considerations involving spaces satisfying property R. Two key results we obtain are that if a dcpo $P$ with the Scott topology is a strong $d$-space, then it is well-filtered, and if additionally the Scott topology of the product $P\times P$ is the product of the Scott topologies of the factors, then the Scott space of $P$ is sober. We also exhibit connections of this work with de Groot duality.

Lax extensions of set functors play a key role in various areas, including topology, concurrent systems, and modal logic, while predicate liftings provide a generic semantics of modal operators. We take a fresh look at the connection between lax extensions and predicate liftings from the point of view of quantale-enriched relations. Using this perspective, we show in particular that various fundamental concepts and results arise naturally and their proofs become very elementary. Ultimately, we prove that every lax extension is induced by a class of predicate liftings; we discuss several implications of this result.

Cyclic proof systems permit derivations that are finite graphs in contrast to conventional derivation trees. The soundness of such proofs is ensured by imposing a soundness condition on derivations. The most common such condition is the global trace condition (GTC), a condition on the infinite paths through the derivation graph. To give a uniform treatment of such cyclic proof systems, Brotherston proposed an abstract notion of trace. We extend Brotherston’s approach into a category theoretical rendition of cyclic derivations, advancing the framework in two ways: first, we introduce activation algebras which allow for a more natural formalisation of trace conditions in extant cyclic proof systems. Second, accounting for the composition of trace information allows us to derive novel results about cyclic proofs, such as introducing a Ramsey-style trace condition. Furthermore, we connect our notion of trace to automata theory and prove that verifying the GTC for abstract cyclic proofs with certain trace conditions is PSPACE-complete.
