Abstract

Description: Inhomogeneous dynamical mean-field theory is developed to determine electronic charge reconstruction for strongly correlated multilayered nanosctructures. The theory is applied to the problem of charge and heat transport perpendicular to the layers. We find that the electronic charge reconstruction can significantly enhance the thermal transport properties producing Seebeck coefficients larger than 160 microvolts/K and figure-of-merits larger than 1. This work shows that at the nanoscale, properties of materials can be modified so much near the interfaces, that they no longer resemble their bulk constituents, and novel behavior can arise which may have important technological implications for devices.
