Sphene (CaTiSio5 ) is obtained as the main crystalline phase in Na2O-A12O3-CaO-TiO2-SiO2 glass-ceramics containing up to ∼ 15 wt% of simulated nuclear fuel recycle waste, by maintaining the precursor glass at ∼ 1050°C for sufficient time to allow nucleation and crystal growth. The implications for production of an engineering-scale waste form are discussed.
