This paper is an offshoot of my doctoral research at the University of Oxford on the development of vaulted construction during the second half of the first and early second centuries AD. The plans of Trajan's Markets are made from my own survey of the monument and are generated by computer using AutoCad Release 12. I would like to thank the British School at Rome as well as the Craven and Meyerstein Committees at Oxford for funding my stay at the British School during the autumn of 1993. I would also like to thank Dott.ssa Lucrezia Ungaro and Dott. Roberto Meneghini of the Soprintendenza Comunale of the Comune di Roma for their support and encouragement of my study of the vaulting at Trajan's Markets and the custodi there for providing me with a very tall ladder. I am grateful to Jim Coulton, Janet DeLaine, and my husband, Tom Carpenter, for reading drafts of this paper and providing many useful comments. I am particularly indebted to Margareta Steinby for providing her comments on this paper and for taking the time to examine the casts and to confirm my identifications of the stamps, which in some cases were very difficult to read.
