This paper is a continuation of the author's previous paper on “The state of carbon in iron and steel, a new hypothesis of the hardening of steel” (read on the 19th December 1881, see p. 368), and is an attempt to give an explanation in accordance with the views given out in that paper of the manner in which the various elements most common in steel exert their influence in so materially modifying the properties of the metal.

The following are the elements the action of which is considered, viz., silicon, sulphur, phosphorus, manganese, chromium, tungsten, and titanium.
