The paper which I have the honour of submitting to the Faculty may be briefly described as a plea for Research in Life Assurance, with the object of throwing light on many of the problems which arise in connection with the practical work of our business.

As the most satisfactory way of obtaining successful results it advocates the establishment of a Bureau of Research—preferably of a permanent nature.

page 65 note 1 In support of these views, the following sentence may be quoted from a paper given last session to the Insurance Institute of Ireland by Dr. John Lumsden:— “If all first-class Companies could join hands in working out the problem great results might be expected, and surely in the records of British Companies there is a rich mine of information bearing upon prognosis in diseased states, which, if properly worked, would yield returns no less valuable to the whole medical profession than to the Insurance Companies and their policyholders.”
