This issue of Acta Neuropsychiatrica focuses on schizophrenia and psychosis. It begins with an invited editorial Reference Conus, Polari, Berk and Macneil(1) written by a group that is at the forefront of research in this field. The editorial discusses the ‘duration of untreated psychosis’, a topic that has been the theme of many symposia in recent conferences. Authors from this same group also explore the complex relationship between trauma and psychosis in a scholarly brief Reference Conus, Berk and Schäfer(2) as part of our regular Intervention Insights section. The psychosis theme continues with an interesting review by Seretti et al. Reference Serretti, Olgiati and Mendelli(3) that delves into schizophrenia pathophysiology. Specifically, this paper discusses aspects of the genetics of schizophrenia along with its prevention and rehabilitation. Following on from this is an original article by Keshavan et al. Reference Keshavan, Vora, Montrose, Diwadkar and Sweeney(4) that reports fascinating insights that have been gleaned by assessing olfactory function in patients with schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is clearly a multifaceted and sophisticated disorder and its clinical complexity is highlighted further in a Comment and Critique written by Kumar et al. Reference Kumar, Sivaraman, Chinnamani, Rathore, Thangaraju and Pandey(5) in which viral encephalopathy manifests as a ‘phenocopy’ of schizophrenia.

In addition to papers on psychosis and schizophrenia, there are two interesting original articles in this issue that report on treatment aspects of bipolar disorder Reference Constant, Seghers and Ranalli(6,Reference Doudney, Harley and Pearson7). Further, maintaining a focus on mood I would like to mention two papers Reference Malhi, Adams and Lampe(8,Reference Malhi, Adams and Porter9) in our ‘sister journal’Reference Munk-Jørgensen, Christiansen and Licht(10) that provide a clinical overview of the management of mood disorders. A brief introduction to these clinical practice recommendations is provided in our regular Pictures and Prose section and it is hoped that readers will refer to Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavia to access the full papers Reference Malhi, Adams and Lampe(8,Reference Malhi, Adams and Porter9).
