We prove that the existence of a measurable cardinal is equivalent to the existence of a normal space whose modal logic coincides with the modal logic of the Kripke frame isomorphic to the powerset of a two element set.

We construct a separately continuous function $e:E\times K\rightarrow \{0,1\}$ on the product of a Baire space $E$ and a compact space $K$ such that no restriction of $e$ to any non-meagre Borel set in $E\times K$ is continuous. The function $e$ has no points of joint continuity, and, hence, it provides a negative solution of Talagrand’s problem in Talagrand [Espaces de Baire et espaces de Namioka, Math. Ann.270 (1985), 159–164].

It is well known that if X is a CW-complex, then for every weak homotopy equivalence f : A → B, the map f* : [X, A] → [X, B] induced in homotopy classes is a bijection. In fact, up to homotopy equivalence, only CW-complexes have that property. Now, for which spaces X is f* : [B, X] → [A, X] a bijection for every weak equivalence f? This question was considered by J. Strom and T. Goodwillie. In this note we prove that a non-empty space inverts weak equivalences if and only if it is contractible.

The shift map σ on ω* is the continuous self-map of ω* induced by the function n ↦ n + 1 on ω. Given a compact Hausdorff space X and a continuous function f : X → X, we say that (X, f) is a quotient of (ω*, σ) whenever there is a continuous surjection Q : ω*→ X such that Q ○ σ = σ ○ f.

Our main theorem states that if the weight of X is at most ℵ1, then (X, f) is a quotient of (ω*, σ), if and only if f is weakly incompressible (which means that no nontrivial open U ⊆ X has $f\left( {\bar{U}} \right) \subseteq U$). Under CH, this gives a complete characterization of the quotients of (ω*, σ) and implies, for example, that (ω*, σ−1) is a quotient of (ω*, σ).

In the language of topological dynamics, our theorem states that a dynamical system of weight ℵ1 is an abstract ω-limit set if and only if it is weakly incompressible.

We complement these results by proving (1) our main theorem remains true when ℵ1 is replaced by any κ < p, (2) consistently, the theorem becomes false if we replace ℵ1 by ℵ2, and (3) OCA + MA implies that (ω*, σ−1) is not a quotient of (ω*, σ).

We introduce the concept of a Zemanian logic above S4.3 and prove that an extension of S4.3 is the logic of a Tychonoff HED-space iff it is Zemanian.

A mapping f : G → s from a left topological group G into a semigroup S is a local homomorphism if for every x є G \ {e}, there is a neighborhood Ux of e such that f (xy) = f (x)f (y) for all y є Ux \ {e}. A local homomorphism f : G → S is onto if for every neighborhood U of e, f(U \ {e}) = S. We show that

(1) every countable regular left topological group containing a discrete subset with exactly one accumulation point admits a local homomorphism onto N,

(2) it is consistent that every countable topological group containing a discrete subset with exactly one accumulation point admits a local homomorphism onto any countable semigroup,

(3) it is consistent that every countable nondiscrete maximally almost periodic topological group admits a local homomorphism onto the countably infinite right zero semigroup.

Let $H$ be a not necessarily separable Hilbert space, and let $\mathcal{B}(H)$ denote the space of all bounded linear operators on $H$. It is proved that a commutative lattice $\mathcal{D}$ of self-adjoint projections in $H$ that contains $0$ and $I$ is spatially complete if and only if it is a closed subset of $\mathcal{B}(H)$ in the strong operator topology. Some related results are obtained concerning commutative lattice-ordered cones of self-adjoint operators that contain $\mathcal{D}$.

Semi-F-spaces are spaces such that given any pair of disjoint cozero sets, every countable subset of one is completely separated from the other. This generalizes the notion of an F-space and is stronger than the property that every countable subset is C*-embedded. Semi-F-spaces are studied and several examples are given.
