Being able to characterise objects at low frequencies, but in situations where the modelling error in the eddy current approximation of the Maxwell system becomes large, is important for improving current metal detection technologies. Importantly, the modelling error becomes large as the frequency increases, but the accuracy of the eddy current model also depends on the object topology and on its materials, with the error being much larger for certain geometries compared to others of the same size and materials. Additionally, the eddy current model breaks down at much smaller frequencies for highly magnetic conducting materials compared to non-permeable objects (with similar conductivities, sizes and shapes) and, hence, characterising small magnetic objects made of permeable materials using the eddy current at typical frequencies of operation for a metal detector is not always possible. To address this, we derive a new asymptotic expansion for permeable highly conducting objects that is valid for small objects and holds not only for frequencies where the eddy current model is valid but also for situations where the eddy current modelling error becomes large and applying the eddy approximation would be invalid. The leading-order term we derive leads to new forms of object characterisations in terms of polarizability tensor object descriptions where the coefficients can be obtained from solving vectorial transmission problems. We expect these new characterisations to be important when considering objects at greater stand-off distance from the coils, which is important for safety critical applications, such as the identification of landmines, unexploded ordnance and concealed weapons. We also expect our results to be important when characterising artefacts of archaeological and forensic significance at greater depths than the eddy current model allows and to have further applications parking sensors and improving the detection of hidden, out-of-sight, metallic objects.

This paper is concerned with the increasing stability of the inverse source problem for the elastic wave equation with attenuation in three dimensions. The stability estimate consists of the Lipschitz type data discrepancy and the high frequency tail of the source function, where the latter decreases as the upper bound of the frequency increases. The stability also shows exponential dependence on the attenuation coefficient. The ingredients of the analysis include Carleman estimates and time decay estimates for the elastic wave equation to obtain an exact observability bound, and the study of the resonance-free region and an upper bound of the resolvent in this region for the elliptic operator with respect to the complex frequency. The advantage of the method developed in this work is that it can be used to study the case of variable attenuation coefficient.

This paper is concerned with the invisibility cloaking in acoustic wave scattering from a new perspective. We are especially interested in achieving the invisibility cloaking by completely regular and isotropic mediums. It is shown that an interior transmission eigenvalue problem arises in our study, which is the one considered theoretically in Cakoni et al. (Transmission eigenvalues for inhomogeneous media containing obstacles, Inverse Problems and Imaging, 6 (2012), 373–398). Based on such an observation, we propose a cloaking scheme that takes a three-layer structure including a cloaked region, a lossy layer and a cloaking shell. The target medium in the cloaked region can be arbitrary but regular, whereas the mediums in the lossy layer and the cloaking shell are both regular and isotropic. We establish that if a certain non-transparency condition is satisfied, then there exists an infinite set of incident waves such that the cloaking device is nearly invisible under the corresponding wave interrogation. The set of waves is generated from the Herglotz approximation of the associated interior transmission eigenfunctions. We provide both theoretical and numerical justifications.

We propose a reliable direct imaging method based on the reverse time migration for finding extended obstacles with phaseless total field data. We prove that the imaging resolution of the method is essentially the same as the imaging results using the scattering data with full phase information when the measurement is far away from the obstacle. The imaginary part of the cross-correlation imaging functional always peaks on the boundary of the obstacle. Numerical experiments are included to illustrate the powerful imaging quality

The first-order cross correlation and corresponding applications in the passive imaging are deeply studied by Garnier and Papanicolaou in their pioneer works. In this paper, the results of the first-order cross correlation are generalized to the second-order cross correlation. The second-order cross correlation is proven to be a statistically stable quantity, with respective to the random ambient noise sources. Specially, with proper time scales, the stochastic fluctuation for the second-order cross correlation converges much faster than the first-order one. Indeed, the convergent rate is of order , with 0 < α < 1. Besides, by using the stationary phase method in both homogeneous and scattering medium, similar behaviors of the singular components for the second-order cross correlation are obtained. Finally, two imaging methods are proposed to search for a target point reflector: One method is based on the imaging function, and has a better signal-to-noise rate; Another method is based on the geometric property, and can improve the bad range resolution of the imaging results.

A novel method is developed for solving the inverse problem of reconstructing the shape of an interior cavity. The boundary of the cavity is assumed to be a small and smooth perturbation of a circle. The incident field is generated by a point source inside the cavity. The scattering data is taken on a circle centered at the source. The method requires only a single incident wave at one frequency. Using a transformed field expansion, the original boundary value problem is reduced to a successive sequence of two-point boundary value problems and is solved in a closed form. By dropping higher order terms in the power series expansion, the inverse problem is linearized and an explicit relation is established between the Fourier coefficients of the cavity surface function and the total field. A nonlinear correction algorithm is devised to improve the accuracy of the reconstruction. Numerical results are presented to show the effectiveness of the method and its ability to obtain subwavelength resolution.

Consider the inverse diffraction problem to determine a two-dimensional periodic structure from scattered elastic waves measured above the structure. We formulate the inverse problem as a least squares optimization problem, following the two-step algorithm by G. Bruckner and J. Elschner [Inverse Probl., 19 (2003), 315-329] for electromagnetic diffraction gratings. Such a method is based on the Kirsch-Kress optimization scheme and consists of two parts: a linear severely ill-posed problem and a nonlinear well-posed one. We apply this method to both smooth (C2) and piecewise linear gratings for the Dirichlet boundary value problem of the Navier equation. Numerical reconstructions from exact and noisy data illustrate the feasibility of the method.

In this paper, we propose an iterative two-grid method for the edge finite element discretizations (a saddle-point system) of Perfectly Matched Layer(PML) equations to the Maxwell scattering problem in two dimensions. Firstly, we use a fine space to solve a discrete saddle-point system of H(grad) variational problems, denoted by auxiliary system 1. Secondly, we use a coarse space to solve the original saddle-point system. Then, we use a fine space again to solve a discrete H(curl)-elliptic variational problems, denoted by auxiliary system 2. Furthermore, we develop a regularization diagonal block preconditioner for auxiliary system 1 and use H-X preconditioner for auxiliary system 2. Hence we essentially transform the original problem in a fine space to a corresponding (but much smaller) problem on a coarse space, due to the fact that the above two preconditioners are efficient and stable. Compared with some existing iterative methods for solving saddle-point systems, such as PMinres, numerical experiments show the competitive performance of our iterative two-grid method.

We propose a numerical procedure to extend to full aperture the acoustic far-field pattern (FFP) when measured in only few observation angles. The reconstruction procedure is a multi-step technique that combines a total variation regularized iterative method with the standard Tikhonov regularized pseudo-inversion. The proposed approach distinguishes itself from existing solution methodologies by using an exact representation of the total variation which is crucial for the stability and robustness of Newton algorithms. We present numerical results in the case of two-dimensional acoustic scattering problems to illustrate the potential of the proposed procedure for reconstructing the full aperture of the FFP from very few noisy data such as backscattering synthetic measurements.

Consider the scattering of a time-harmonic electromagnetic plane wave by an arbitrarily shaped and filled cavity embedded in a perfect electrically conducting infinite ground plane. A method of symmetric coupling of finite element and boundary integral equations is presented for the solutions of electromagnetic scattering in both transverse electric and magnetic polarization cases. Given the incident field, the direct problem is to determine the field distribution from the known shape of the cavity; while the inverse problem is to determine the shape of the cavity from the measurement of the field on an artificial boundary enclosing the cavity. In this paper, both the direct and inverse scattering problems are discussed based on a symmetric coupling method. Variational formulations for the direct scattering problem are presented, existence and uniqueness of weak solutions are studied, and the domain derivatives of the field with respect to the cavity shape are derived. Uniqueness and local stability results are established in terms of the inverse problem.
