Thanks to the data of the WISE all-sky survey we discovered that the non-thermal infrared emission of blazars, the largest population of associated γ-ray sources, has peculiar spectral properties. Here we provide a summary of all results achieved on the infrared–γ-ray connection. We also show results on the latest statistical analysis of the tight correlation between the mid-infrared colors and the γ-ray spectral index for Fermi blazars, a connection that links both emitted powers and spectral shapes of particles accelerated in blazar jets over ten decades in frequency of the electromagnetic spectrum. Finally, we outline all developments performed in the last decade achieved using the infrared– γ-ray connection to discover hundreds of new blazars within the sample of unidentified γ-ray sources thanks to optical spectroscopic observations.

We present results from our ongoing monitoring programs aimed at identifying and understanding Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in extreme flux and spectral states. Observations of AGN in extreme states can reveal the nature of the inner accretion flow, the physics of matter under strong gravity, and they provide insight on the properties of ionized absorbers and outflows launched near supermassive black holes (SMBHs). We present new results from our long-term monitoring of IC 3599, WPVS007, and Mrk 335, multi-wavelength follow-ups of the newly identified changing-look AGN HE 1136–2304, and UV–X-ray follow-ups of the binary SMBH candidate OJ 287 after its 2015 optical maximum, now in a new optical-X-ray–high-state.

To search for variable radio sources, we used two well-known radio catalogs NVSS and FIRST, both providing fluxes at 1400 MHz. Cross-correlation enabled us to find 556,282 radio sources present in both catalogs. Using the 3σ criteria we distinguished 6,301 variable radio sources, and with certain limitations specified the 260 strongest radio variables. We cross-correlated these 260 sources with other catalogs at different wavelengths (APM, SDSS DR10, VCV-13, BZCAT, 2MASS, and WISE). As a result we obtained photometric data for optical, NIR, MIR and radio ranges for these 260 variable radio sources to study them in details.

To study the radio properties of AGN, we cross-correlate and investigate Veron-Cetty & Veron catalog of QSOs and Active Galaxies (v.13, 2010) with a number of radio catalogs: NVSS, FIRST, GB6, 87GB, SUMSS, WISH, WENSS, and 7C. This catalog contains 168,940 objects with positional accuracy of mostly 1 arcsec, though many positions have larger errors. We use new cross-correlation software based on accuracy of each object independently. In this software we take into account errors for each source and take identifications with errors within 3 sigma. Altogether, we find ~16,000 AGN having radio detection in any of the listed catalogs. Using all data from radio catalogs, we derive a homogeneous sample of radio AGN. The sample allows accomplish several tasks, including study of the distribution of radio sources by activity types, differences in physical properties of radio-loud and radio-quiet AGN, luminosity functions for various types of radio AGN, study of the q parameter by AGN types and its evolution, etc.

The extragalactic very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray sky is dominated at the moment by more than fifty blazars detected by the present imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACT), with a majority (about 90%) of high-frequency peaked BL Lac objects (HBL) and a small number of low-frequency peaked and intermediate BL Lac objects (LBL and IBL) and flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQ). A significant variability is often observed, with time scales from a few minutes to months and years. The spectral energy distribution (SED) of these blazars typically shows two bumps from the radio to the TeV range, which can usually be described by leptonic or hadronic processes. While elementary bricks of the VHE emission scenarios seem now reasonably well identified, a global picture of these sources, describing the geometry and dynamics of the VHE zone, is not yet available. Multiwavelength monitoring and global alert network will be important to better constrain the picture, especially with the perspective of CTA, a major project of the next generation in ground-based gamma-ray astronomy.

The massive amount of data produced by the recent multi-wavelength large-area surveys has spurred the growth of unprecedentedly massive and complex astronomical datasets that are proving the traditional data analysis techniques more and more inadequate. Knowledge discovery techniques, while relatively new to astronomy, have been successfully applied in several other quantitative disciplines for the determination of patterns in extremely complex datasets. The concerted use of different unsupervised and supervised machine learning techniques, in particular, can be a powerful approach to answer specific questions involving high-dimensional datasets and degenerate observables. In this paper I will present CLaSPS, a data-driven methodology for the discovery of patterns in high-dimensional astronomical datasets based on the combination of clustering techniques and pattern recognition algorithms. I shall also describe the result of the application of CLaSPS to a sample of a peculiar class of AGNs, the blazars.

A recent progress in the study of γ-ray jets is reviewed, with a focus on some theoretical interpretations of the VHE emission from M87, and possibly other misaligned blazars; the connection between the GeV breaks exhibited by bright LAT blazars and opacity sources in the broad line region; the consequences of the detection of GeV emission from GRBs to models of magnetic outflows; and the implications of the thermal emission observed is some GRBs to dissipation of the outflow bulk energy.

We refer on analysis of the ESA INTEGRAL satellite data for blazars, promising sources to be observed during their active states. We further refer on searches for and analysis of supermassive binary black holes requiring very long time intervals (50 years and more) provided by digitised astronomical plates.

We present the results of X-ray and millimetre monitoring of the blazar 3C273 at 1–2 day intervals over the period 12 December 1992 to 24 January 1993. No large flares are seen in this period but variations in both wavebands of ∼ 30% on few day timescales are apparent. The ROSAT PSPC X-ray spectrum consists of 2 power-law components with the harder component dominating above 0.5 keV. There is very little correlation between the variability of the soft and hard components. The soft component does not correlate with the millimetre variations, but the hard component correlates reasonably well and leads the millimetre variations by about 10 days. These results show that the hard X-ray component cannot be a simple extrapolation of the millimetre/IR synchrotron component but may be explained as a self-Compton component in a shocked jet.

We demonstrate that the prevalence of superluminal sources in the sample of γ-ray blazars and the peak of their luminosity spectra at γ-ray energies can be readily explained if the γ-rays result from the inverse Compton scattering of the accretion disk radiation by relativistic electrons in outflowing plasam jets. Compton scattering of external radiation by nonthermal particles in blazar jets is dominated by accretion disk photons rather than scattered radiation to distances of ∼ 0.01–0.1 pc from the central engine for standard parameters. The size of the γ-ray photosphere and the spectral evolution of the relativistic electron spectra constrain the location of the acceleration and emission sites in these objects.
