The notion of a complete type can be generalized in a natural manner to allow assigning a value in an arbitrary Boolean algebra $\mathcal {B}$ to each formula. We show some basic results regarding the effect of the properties of $\mathcal {B}$ on the behavior of such types, and show they are particularity well behaved in the case of NIP theories. In particular, we generalize the third author’s result about counting types, as well as the notion of a smooth type and extending a type to a smooth one. We then show that Keisler measures are tied to certain Boolean types and show that some of the results can thus be transferred to measures—in particular, giving an alternative proof of the fact that every measure in a dependent theory can be extended to a smooth one. We also study the stable case. We consider this paper as an invitation for more research into the topic of Boolean types.

We present a new axiomatization of classical mereology in which the three components of the theory—ordering, composition, and decomposition principles—are neatly separated. The equivalence of our axiom system with other, more familiar systems is established by purely deductive methods, along with additional results on the relative strengths of the composition and decomposition axioms of each system.

In this paper we develop a point-free system of geometry based on the notions of region, parthood, and ovality, the last one being a region-based counterpart of the notion of convex set. In order to show that the system we propose is sufficient to reconstruct an affine geometry we make use of a theory of a Polish mathematician Aleksander Śniatycki from [15], in which the concept of half-plane is assumed as basic.

The corresponding game theoretic properties of c.B.a.'s are investigated. So, Black has a winning strategy (w.s.) if κ ≥ π() or if contains a κ-closed dense subset. On the other hand, if White has a w.s., then κ ∈ . The existence of w.s. is characterized in a combinatorial way and in terms of forcing. In particular, if 2<κ = κ ∈ Reg and forcing by preserves the regularity of κ, then White has a w.s. iff the power 2κ is collapsed to κ in some extension. It is shown that, under the GCH, for each set S ⊆ Reg there is a c.B.a. such that White (respectively. Black) has a w.s. for each infinite cardinal κ ∈ S (resp. κ ∉ S). Also it is shown consistent that for each κ ∈ Reg there is a c.B.a. on which the game is undetermined.

We show that it is consistent with ZFC (relative to large cardinals) that every infinite Boolean algebra B has an irredundant subset A such that 2∣A∣ = 2∣B∣. This implies in particular that B has 2∣B∣ subalgebras. We also discuss some more general problems about subalgebras and free subsets of an algebra.

The result on the number of subalgebras in a Boolean algebra solves a question of Monk from [6]. The paper is intended to be accessible as far as possible to a general audience, in particular we have confined the more technical material to a “black box” at the end. The proof involves a variation on Foreman and Woodin's model in which GCH fails everywhere.

For a complete theory of Boolean algebras T, let MT denote the class of countable models of T. For B1, B2 ∈ MT, let B1 ≤ B2 mean that B2 is elementarily embeddable in B2. Theorem 1. By Tarski [1949], Tω is complete. Recall that ‹A, < › is partial well-quasi-ordering, it is a partial quasi-ordering and for every {ai, ⃒ i ∈ ω} ⊆ A, there are i < j < ω such that ai ≤ aj. Theorem 2. contains a subset M such that the partial orderings ‹M, ≤ ↾ M› and are isomorphic. ∎ Let M′0 denote the class of all countable Boolean algebras. For B1, B2 ∈ M′0, let B1 ≤′ B2 mean that B1 is embeddable in B2. Remark. ‹M′0, ≤′› is well-quasi-ordered. ∎ This follows from Laver's theorem [1971] that the class of countable linear orderings with the embeddability relation is well-quasi-ordered and the fact that every countable Boolean algebra is isomorphic to a Boolean algebra of a linear ordering.

The principle of duality for Boolean algebra states that if an identity ƒ = g is valid in every Boolean algebra and if we transform ƒ = g into a new identity by interchanging (i) the two lattice operations and (ii) the two lattice bound elements 0 and 1, then the resulting identity ƒ = g is also valid in every Boolean algebra. Also, the equational theory of Boolean algebras is finitely based. Believing in the cosmic order of mathematics, it is only natural to ask whether the equational theory of Boolean algebras can be generated by a finite irredundant set of identities which is already closed for the duality mapping. Here we provide one such equational basis.
