This chapter gives a quantitative introduction to decoherence theory, including density matrix formalism in the context of quantum field theory, and a survey of the quantum trajectories method. Finally, the mathematical structure for a new proposal for spontaneous collapse, introduced nonmathematically in Chapter 6, is given.

This chapter surveys several different mathematical methods for time-dependent change of quantum states using quantum field theory. The Bloch sphere method is introduced, which can be used to show the physics discussed in Chapter 3, that electronic transitions, or “jumps,” are not instantaneous.

This chapter addresses generalizations of the Schrödinger equation. It tries to convey that the Schrödinger equation is not the whole story when it comes to quantum physics. This is illustrated by expanding the framework in two rather orthogonal directions: relativistic quantum physics and open quantum systems. The former is introduced by taking the Klein–Gordon equation as the starting point, before shifting attention to the Dirac equation. Its time-independent version is solved numerically for a one-dimensional example, and its relation to the Schrödinger equation is derived. Also here, the Pauli matrices play crucial roles. The notion of open quantum systems is motivated by the fact that it is hard to keep a quantum system completely isolated from its surroundings – and that this necessitates a different approach than the one provided by wave functions. To this end, reduced density matrices and the notion of master equations are introduced. It is explained why master equations of the form of the generic Gorini–Kossakowski–Lindblad–Sudarshan (GKLS) equation are desirable. Two particular phenomena following this equation are studied quantitatively: amplitude damping for a single quantum bit system and particle capture in a confining potential. Again, these examples draw directly on previous ones.

We study our first cryptographic tasks: secure encryption of a quantum state. We describe the classical one-time pad and present its quantum extension, the quantum one-time pad, which achieves perfectly secure quantum encryption. Before studying this task, we extend the mathematical formalism introduced in Chapter 1 by studying density matrices, general measurements on quantum states, and the partial trace operation.

Truncation of basis states is a vital step in the tensor network renormalization. This chapter introduces the concept of reduced density matrices and discusses the criterion of judging which state should be retained and which not in the basis truncation. In a Hermitian system, the reduced density matrix of a quantum state is semi-positive definite, and its eigenvalues measure the probabilities of the corresponding eigenvectors. Therefore, we should do the truncation according to the eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix. This criterion is equivalent to taking a Schmidt decomposition for the wave function of the quantum state and truncating the basis states according to their singular values. It is also equivalent to maximizing the fidelity of the targeted state before and after truncation. We also introduce the edge and bond density matrices and show that they have the same eigen-spectra as the reduced density matrix.

Presents the basic postulates of quantum mechanics in terms of the density matrix instead of the usual state vector formalism in the case of an isolated system. Extends it to the case of open systems with the help of the reduced density matrix formalism, and to the case of an imperfect state preparation described by a statistical mixture. Introduces the concept of quantum state purity to characterize the degree of mixture of the state, and shows that one can always "purify" a density matrix by going into a Hilbert space of larger dimension.

Optical nonlinearity emerges from nonlinear interaction of light with matter. In this chapter, the basic concept and formulation of light‒matter interaction are discussed through a semiclassical approach with the behavior of the optical field classically described by Maxwell’s equations and the state of the material quantum mechanically described by a wave function governed by the Hamiltonian of the material. An optical field interacts with a material through its interaction with the electrons in the material. A Schrödinger electron is nonrelativistic with a nonzero mass, and a Dirac electron is relativistic with a zero mass. The interaction Hamiltonian can be expressed in terms of the vector and scalar potentials by using the Coulomb gauge. It can be expressed in terms of the electric and magnetic fields through multipole expansion as a series of electric and magnetic multipole interactions, with the first term being the electric dipole interaction. The electric polarization of a material induced by an optical field is obtained through density matrix analysis. The optical susceptibility of the material is then obtained from the electric polarization.

Optical nonlinearity manifests nonlinear interaction of an optical field with a material. The origin of optical nonlinearity is the nonlinear response of electrons in a material to an optical field. Macroscopically, the nonlinear optical response of a material is described by an optical polarization that is a nonlinear function of the optical field. This optical polarization is obtained through density matrix analysis by using the interaction Hamiltonian, which can be approximated with electric dipole interaction in most cases. When the interaction Hamiltonian is small compared to the Hamiltonian of the system, it can be treated as a perturbation to the system by expanding the density matrix in a perturbation series and the total optical polarization in terms of a series of polarizations. In most nonlinear optical processes of interest, the perturbation expansion of the polarization is valid and only the three terms of linear, second-order, and third-order polarizations are significant. The perturbation expansion is not valid in the cases of high-order harmonic generation and optical saturation. Then, a full analysis is required.

Optical properties of massless Dirac electrons are considered. In particular, it is shown that they provide a universal, frequency-independent adsorption coefficient determined by fine structure constant. The possible effect of interelectron interaction on this property is discussed. Using a perturbation theory for density matrix, we derive Kubo formula for various response functions and use it to consider optics, magnetooptics, charge screening and diamagnetism of massless Dirac electrons. Graphene plasmonics is briefly reviewed.
