Thirders sometimes feel compelled to give the same answer – a credence of 1/3 – to the original and the duplicating Sleeping Beauty problem, which leads to some unwanted consequences. I will argue that they do not have to feel compelled to give the same answer, because the original and the duplicating version of the Sleeping Beauty problem are different types of decision problems. If one accepts that it is rationally permissible to give different answers to different types of decision problems, both versions do not require the same solution.

De nombreuses études ont affirmé l’association significative des Copy Number Variants (CNVs) aux troubles psychotiques et de l’humeur, remettant en question l’hypothèse « maladie commune-variants communs » pour un modèle « maladie commune-variants rares » [1]. Par ailleurs, plusieurs études ont montré l’association de même CNVs à des pathologies différentes telles que l’autisme, le trouble bipolaire, le retard mental ou l’épilepsie, ce qui suggère un effet pléiotropique de ces mutations qui pourrait conduire à reconsidérer la nosologie actuelle. Enfin, certains de ces CNVs apparaîtraient de novo, mais il existe peu d’études familiales, et aucune effectuée sur des pedigrees étendus pour préciser les relations génotype-phénotype au sein des familles [2]. Dans ce travail nous avons étudié une famille consanguine multi-générationnelle et multiplexe pour le phénotype de trouble bipolaire de type I et de schizophrénie ; identifiée dans la région de Tlemcen au nord ouest de l’Algérie. Une recherche pangénomique de CNVs utilisant le Kit 44 K Agilent Human Genome CGH Microarray, a été achevée pour quatre sujets dont deux atteints et deux sains. Cette analyse a permis de mettre en évidence la duplication 16p13.33 en position 3863532-3927262 (Hg19), qui présente un caractère de novo chez une patiente, car absente chez ses deux parents. La duplication de la région chromosomique 16p13.3 affectant le gène CREBBP dont la délétion et/ou la mutation est incriminée dans le syndrome de Rubinstein-Taybi est actuellement décrite dans une entité syndromique regroupant dysmorphie de la face, retard mental léger à moyen, croissance normale, arthrogrypose, anomalies orthopédiques des extrémités surtout des mains et des anomalies de développement cardiaque, génital et oculaire [3]. Ce CNV n’a jamais été décrit précédemment dans le phénotype de trouble bipolaire ; dans ce travail nous présentons une nouvelle description génotype-phénotype d’une dup16p13.33 de novo, dans le trouble bipolaire type I.

We deal with a random graph model evolving in discrete time steps by duplicating and deleting the edges of randomly chosen vertices. We prove the existence of an almost surely asymptotic degree distribution, with stretched exponential decay; more precisely, the proportion of vertices of degree d tends to some positive number cd > 0 almost surely as the number of steps goes to ∞, and cd ~ (eπ)1/2d1/4e-2√d holds as d → ∞.

Germplasm accessions of wild Lactuca species are maintained worldwide in ex situ collections as gene reservoirs for quality and disease resistance traits for cultivated lettuce. Accessions of 12 Lactuca species from 6 genebanks were compared via morphological characterization and AFLP (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism)-based profiling to estimate the extent of duplication. A method of assessing redundancy within very similar, but not identical accessions, is proposed, based on 352 polymorphic AFLP products. Seven duplication groups showed a high level of AFLP similarity, and one pair of Lactuca saligna accessions displayed identical AFLP profiles. In several cases, the morphological assessment indicated that a taxonomic reclassification of accessions was necessary. Candidate duplicates were identified using population parameters and inter- and intra-accession variability. The implications of these findings on the conservation of wild species are discussed.

Duplication is the replacement of a factor w within a word by ww. This operation can be used iteratively to generate languages starting from words or sets of words. By undoing duplications, one can eventually reach a square-free word, the original word's duplication root. The duplication root is unique, if the length of duplications is fixed. Based on these unique roots we define the concept of duplication code. Elementary properties are stated, then the conditions under which infinite duplication codes exist are fully characterized; the relevant parameters are the duplication length and alphabet size. Finally, some properties of the languages generated by duplication codes are investigated.

A rare case of incomplete tracheal duplication with severe unilateral lung hypoplasia is presented. Photo-documentation of the gross post-mortem specimens is presented so that the anatomical aspects of this unusual anomaly can be recognized and appreciated. Clinical information is presented in the hope that successful premorbid identification of potential complications of this anomaly could be made by future physicians. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of pathologically-confirmed duplication of the trachea.
