Consider an urn containing balls labeled with integer values. Define a discrete-time random process by drawing two balls, one at a time and with replacement, and noting the labels. Add a new ball labeled with the sum of the two drawn labels. This model was introduced by Siegmund and Yakir (2005) Ann. Prob.33, 2036 for labels taking values in a finite group, in which case the distribution defined by the urn converges to the uniform distribution on the group. For the urn of integers, the main result of this paper is an exponential limit law. The mean of the exponential is a random variable with distribution depending on the starting configuration. This is a novel urn model which combines multi-drawing and an infinite type of balls. The proof of convergence uses the contraction method for recursive distributional equations.

Under mild nondegeneracy assumptions on branching rates in each generation, we provide a criterion for almost sure extinction of a multi-type branching process with time-dependent branching rates. We also provide a criterion for the total number of particles (conditioned on survival and divided by the expectation of the resulting random variable) to approach an exponential random variable as time goes to ∞.

We obtain a weak approximation for the reduced family tree in a near-critical Markov branching process when the time interval considered is long; we also extend Yaglom's theorem and the exponential law to this case. These results are then applied to the problem of estimating the age of our most recent common female ancestor, using mitochondrial DNA sequences taken from a sample of contemporary humans.

It is shown that, under second moment assumptions, uniformly for s ∈ ([0, 1]k of the form s = 1 – cu, c a constant. Here vμ is the componentwise product of the vectors and Q[u] is a constant.

This result is then used to give a new proof of the exponential limit law.
