Vasicek (1977) proved that among all queueing disciplines that do not change the departure process of the queue, FIFO and LIFO yield, respectively, the smallest and the largest expectation of any given convex function of the service delay. In this note we further show that, if arriving customers join the queue stochastically ‘closer' to the server(s), then the expected value of any convex function of service delay is larger. As a more interesting result, we also show that if the function under consideration is concave, then the conclusion will be exactly the opposite. This result indicates that LIFO will be the best discipline if the delay cost is an increasing function but at a diminishing rate.

Consider a two-level storage system operating with the least recently used (LRU) or the first-in, first-out (FIFO) replacement strategy. Accesses to the main storage are described by the independent reference model (IRM). Using the FKG inequality, we prove that the miss ratio for LRU is smaller than or equal to the miss ratio for FIFO.

It has recently been shown that for the G/G/1 queue, virtual delay and attained waiting time have the same stationary distribution. We present a sample-path derivation of this result.

A tandem queue with a FIFO multiserver system at each stage, i.i.d. service times and a renewal process of external arrivals is shown to be regenerative by modeling it as a Harris-ergodic Markov chain. In addition, some explicit regeneration points are found. This generalizes the results of Nummelin (1981) in which a single server system is at each stage and the result of Charlot et al. (1978) in which the FIFO GI/GI/c queue is modeled as a Harris chain. In preparing for our result, we study the random assignment queue and use it to give a new proof of Harris ergodicity of the FIFO queue.

We consider a stockpile in which each item has a stochastic field life with known distribution, this distribution changing in time in a known deterministic fashion. The problem is to order the items for issuance to the field with the objective of maximizing the total field life. Under monotone likelihood ratio assumptions on the field life distributions, and convexity and concavity assumptions on the change in time of the distributions, we show that LIFO and FIFO policies possess a strong optimality property.
