The behavior of queuing systems with two servers and one waiting room is investigated. It is shown that if the service time is constant, then the difference between the times to service completion of the two servers (phase difference) tends to a constant, for increasing input intensities. This phenomenon holds for a wide class of arrival processes, but not when the service time has even a small variability. These results imply that the delay is not stochastically monotone in the input intensity. In general, we conjecture that the behavior of the phase differences, and delays, depends on whether the size of the waiting room is even or odd.

The asymptotic behaviour of the Ek/G/1 queue with finite waiting room is studied. Using a combination of the supplementary variable and phase techniques, queue length and waiting time distributions are obtained. Also the idle period distribution and mean length of the idle and busy periods are found.

For a single-server queue with one waiting place and increasing arrival rate some necessary and sufficient conditions for infinitely many returns to emptiness with probability one are given.

A single-server queue with batch arrivals in a non-homogeneous Poisson process and with balking is studied with respect to the busy period, using supplementary variables. A system of integral equations is obtained on the base of which the transforms are expressed in series. For the homogeneous case, assuming finite waiting room, the solutions are obtained via Cramer's rule. This gives asymptotic expressions for the expectations for large arrival intensity. An efficiency measure giving the long run loss probability is given. For a special case contour integral representations are given as solutions.

The G/M/m queue with only s waiting places is studied. We start by studying the joint distribution of the number of customers present at time t and the time elapsing until the next arrival after t. This gives the asymptotic distribution of the number of customers at the moment of an arrival and at an arbitrary moment. Then waiting time and virtual waiting time distributions are easily obtained. For the G/M/1 queue also the transient solution is given. Finally the case s = ∞ is considered.

For the Ek/G/1 queue with finite waiting room the phase technique is used to analyse the Markov chain imbedded in the queueing process at successive instants at which customers complete service, and the distribution of the busy period, together with the number of customers who arrive, and the number of customers served, during that period, is obtained. The limit as the size of the waiting room becomes infinite is found.

An M/G/1 service system with finite waiting room is studied. A customer is served by one server in two phases, during the first of which a place in the waiting room is occupied. Starting from a determinant expression for the Laplace-Stieltjes transform of the busy period given in [2] we obtain contour integral expressions for the transform and the expectation, thereby generalising a result by Cohen [1]. This is effected by developing the determinants along the first row.

An M/G/1 service system with finite waiting room is studied. A customer is served by one server in phases, during some of which a place in the waiting room is occupied. The busy period length distribution is obtained from a system of integral equations leading to a linear system in Laplace-Stieltjes transforms. An asymptotic expression, for large intensity of arrival, for the expectation of this length is given. An efficiency measure giving the long run customer loss ratio is obtained. The model is shown to apply to an inventory and a container traffic problem.

Customers arrive in groups to a single server queue with finite waiting room. Two-dimensional distributions for times and numbers of served customers between occurrences of states in the embedded Markov chain are obtained by linear algebra giving systems of equations for joint Laplace-Stieltjes transforms. For M/M/1 a simple recursion relation for the joint transform of the two variables in the title is derived and used to obtained the first and second moments.

This paper discusses the response process when a Poisson process interacts with a renewal process in such a way that one or more points of the Poisson process eliminate a random number of consecutive points of the renewal process. A queuing situation is devised such that the c.d.f. of the length of the busy period is the same as the c.d.f. of the length of time intervals of the renewal response process. The Laplace-Stieltjes transform is obtained and from this the expectation of the time intervals of the response process is derived. For a special case necessary and sufficient conditions for the response process to be a Poisson process are found.
