We determine almost sure limits of rescaled intrinsic volumes of the construction steps of fractal percolation in ${\mathbb R}^d$ for any dimension $d\geq 1$. We observe a factorization of these limit variables which allows one, in particular, to determine their expectations and covariance structure. We also show the convergence of the rescaled expectations and variances of the intrinsic volumes of the construction steps to the expectations and variances of the limit variables, and we give rates for this convergence in some cases. These results significantly extend our previous work, which addressed only limits of expectations of intrinsic volumes.

Branching processes $(Z_n)_{n \ge 0}$ in a varying environment generalize the Galton–Watson process, in that they allow time dependence of the offspring distribution. Our main results concern general criteria for almost sure extinction, square integrability of the martingale $(Z_n/\mathrm E[Z_n])_{n \ge 0}$, properties of the martingale limit W and a Yaglom-type result stating convergence to an exponential limit distribution of the suitably normalized population size $Z_n$, conditioned on the event $Z_n \gt 0$. The theorems generalize/unify diverse results from the literature and lead to a classification of the processes.

The Assouad dimension of a metric space determines its extremal scaling properties. The derived notion of the Assouad spectrum fixes relative scales by a scaling function to obtain interpolation behaviour between the quasi-Assouad and the box-counting dimensions. While the quasi-Assouad and Assouad dimensions often coincide, they generally differ in random constructions. In this paper we consider a generalised Assouad spectrum that interpolates between the quasi-Assouad and the Assouad dimension. For common models of random fractal sets, we obtain a dichotomy of its behaviour by finding a threshold function where the quasi-Assouad behaviour transitions to the Assouad dimension. This threshold can be considered a phase transition, and we compute the threshold for the Gromov boundary of Galton–Watson trees and one-variable random self-similar and self-affine constructions. We describe how the stochastically self-similar model can be derived from the Galton–Watson tree result.

The class of stochastically self-similar sets contains many famous examples of random sets, for example, Mandelbrot percolation and general fractal percolation. Under the assumption of the uniform open set condition and some mild assumptions on the iterated function systems used, we show that the quasi-Assouad dimension of self-similar random recursive sets is almost surely equal to the almost sure Hausdorff dimension of the set. We further comment on random homogeneous and V -variable sets and the removal of overlap conditions.

The basis of this paper is the elementary observation that the n-step descendant distribution of any Galton–Watson process satisfies a discrete Smoluchowski coagulation equation with multiple coalescence. Using this we obtain simple necessary and sufficient criteria for the convergence of scaling limits of critical Galton–Watson processes in terms of scaled family-size distributions and a natural notion of convergence of Lévy triples. Our results provide a clear and natural interpretation, and an alternate proof, of the fact that the Lévy jump measure of certain continuous-state branching processes (CSBPs) satisfies a generalized Smoluchowski equation. (This result was previously proved by Bertoin and Le Gall (2006).) Our analysis shows that the nonlinear scaling dynamics of CSBPs become linear and purely dilatational when expressed in terms of the Lévy triple associated with the branching mechanism. We prove a continuity theorem for CSBPs in terms of the associated Lévy triples, and use our scaling analysis to prove the existence of universal critical Galton–Watson processes and CSBPs analogous to Doeblin's `universal laws'. Namely, these universal processes generate all possible critical and subcritical CSBPs as subsequential scaling limits. Our convergence results rely on a natural topology for Lévy triples and a continuity theorem for Bernstein transforms (Laplace exponents) which we develop in a self-contained appendix.

Branching processes in random environments have been widely studied and applied to population growth systems to model the spread of epidemics, infectious diseases, cancerous tumor growth, and social network traffic. However, Ebola virus, tuberculosis infections, and avian flu grow or change at rates that vary with time—at peak rates during pandemic time periods, while at low rates when near extinction. The branching processes in generalized autoregressive conditional environments we propose provide a novel approach to branching processes that allows for such time-varying random environments and instances of peak growth and near extinction-type rates. Offspring distributions we consider to illustrate the model include the generalized Poisson, binomial, and negative binomial integer-valued GARCH models. We establish conditions on the environmental process that guarantee stationarity and ergodicity of the mean offspring number and environmental processes and provide equations from which their variances, autocorrelation, and cross-correlation functions can be deduced. Furthermore, we present results on fundamental questions of importance to these processes—the survival-extinction dichotomy, growth behavior, necessary and sufficient conditions for noncertain extinction, characterization of the phase transition between the subcritical and supercritical regimes, and survival behavior in each phase and at criticality.

We study a classical multitype Galton–Watson process with mutation and selection. The individuals are sequences of fixed length over a finite alphabet. On the sharp peak fitness landscape together with independent mutations per locus, we show that, as the length of the sequences goes to ∞ and the mutation probability goes to 0, the asymptotic relative frequency of the sequences differing on k digits from the master sequence approaches (σe-a - 1)(ak/k!)∑i≥ 1ik/σi, where σ is the selective advantage of the master sequence and a is the product of the length of the chains with the mutation probability. The probability distribution Q(σ, a) on the nonnegative integers given by the above equation is the quasispecies distribution with parameters σ and a.

A sequence of first-order integer-valued autoregressive (INAR(1)) processes is investigated, where the autoregressive-type coefficient converges to 1. It is shown that the limiting distribution of the conditional least squares estimator for this coefficient is normal and the rate of convergence is n3/2. Nearly critical Galton–Watson processes with unobservable immigration are also discussed.

We consider the mathematical properties of a time-discrete stochastic process describing explosive proliferation of DNA repeats in human genetic diseases. The process is constructed using a cascade of Galton–Watson branching processes. The main results concern the probability of absorption and the supergeometric growth of the process in the supercritical case. Examples of simulations are provided.

This paper introduces exchangeable bisexual models with fixed population sizes and non-overlapping generations. In each generation there are N pairs of individuals consisting of a female and a male. The N pairs of a generation produce N daughters and N sons altogether, and these 2N children form the N pairs of the next generation at random.

First the extinction of the lines of descendants of a fixed number of pairs is studied, when the population size becomes large. Under suitable conditions this structure can be approximately treated in the framework of a Galton-Watson process. In particular it is shown for the Wright-Fisher model that the discrepancy between the extinction probabilities in the model and in the approximating Galton-Watson process is of order N.

Next, the process of the number of ancestor-pairs of all pairs of a generation is analysed. Under suitable conditions this process, properly normed, has a weak limit as N becomes large. For the Wright-Fisher model this limit is an Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process (restricted to a discrete time-set). The corresponding stationary distributions of the backward processes converge to the normal distribution, as expected.

An almost sure convergence result for the normed population size of a supercritical controlled branching process is proved.

An almost sure convergence result for the normed population size of a bisexual population model is proved. Properties of the limit random variable are deduced. The derivation of similar results for a general class of such processes is discussed.

Customers initially enter a service unit via a waiting room. The customers to be served are stored in a service room which is replenished by the transfer of all those in the waiting room at the points in time where the service room becomes empty. At those epochs of transfer, positive random numbers of ‘overhead customers' are also added to the service room. Algorithmically tractable expressions for the stationary distributions of queue lengths and waiting times at various embedded random epochs are derived. The discussion generalizes an earlier treatment by Takács in several directions.

Characteristics of some collapsing supercritical stochastic population processes where an embedded Galton–Watson process can be isolated are shown to be identical to those of some associated subcritical process.

This paper considers the problem of estimating the growth rate ρ of a p-type Galton–Watson process {Zn}. To this end, a general approach of possible independent interest to central limit theorems for discrete-time branching processes is developed. The idea is to adapt martingale central limit theory to martingale difference triangular arrays indexed by the set of all individuals ever alive. Iterated logarithm laws are derived by similar methods. Asymptotic distribution results and the a.s. asymptotic behaviour are derived for a maximum likelihood estimator based upon all parent–offspring combinations in a given number N of generations, and for the estimator which depends on the total generation sizes only.
