  • Summary

    Environmental violence focuses on the harm from both toxic and non-toxic pollution. Contemporary agricultural practices contribute significantly to such environmental violence through a heavy reliance on synthetic chemicals to raise commodities, as well as fossil fuels for tractors and shipping related to distribution. These same practices further harm persons and communities (both human and non-human) in ways not included in the environmental violence framework. Using Jacques Ellul’s theory of a technological society and technique that values efficiency in all areas of life, this chapter explores the relationship between environmental violence, contemporary agricultural practices, and wider critiques of technology. The chapter concludes with a brief examination of how we might culturally encourage an agriculture of flourishing rather than one focused solely on efficiency through the example of the Catholic Worker farms.

  • Can finite humans grasp universal truth? Is it possible to think beyond the limits of reason? Are we doomed to failure because of our finitude? In this clear and accessible book, Barnabas Aspray presents Ricœur's response to these perennial philosophical questions through an analysis of human finitude at the intersection of philosophy and theology. Using unpublished and previously untranslated archival sources, he shows how Ricœur's groundbreaking concept of symbols leads to a view of creation, not as a theological doctrine, but as a mystery beyond the limits of thought that gives rise to philosophical insight. If finitude is created, then it can be distinguished from both the Creator and evil, leading to a view of human existence that, instead of the 'anguish of no' proclaims the 'joy of yes.'

  • This article considers the impact of both historical and digital transhuman practices in archaeology with an eye towards recent conversations concerning punk archaeology, slow archaeology, and an ‘archaeology of care’. Drawing on Ivan Illich, Jacques Ellul, and Gilles Deleuze, the article suggests that current trends in digital practices risk alienating archaeological labour and de-territorializing archaeological work.
