The present study considered the problem of halloysite nanoscroll synthesis by energy modeling of the formation of chrysotile and halloysite particles. The main aim of the study was to reveal an energy preference between scrolled and platy morphologies of the particles. Both hydrosilicates possess the ability to scroll spontaneously but relatively facile hydrothermal synthesis of the nanoscrolls is available only to the former, whereas halloysite forms mainly plates under the same conditions. This issue was investigated by a phenomenological energy model, taking into account: (1) strain energy due to the size difference between metal oxide and silica sheets; (2) surface-energy difference on the opposite sides of the layer; and (3) adhesion energy. Calculations showed that the halloysite layer had a significant scrolling potential due to the first energy component, but the surface-energy difference acted in the opposite direction and tried to unbend the layer. In contrast, these two actions were co-directional in chrysotile layers. In both cases, the formation of multi-layered plates became more energy favorable when the specific surface energy of the edges decreased. In the range 0.5–3 J/m2 for the specific surface energy, only halloysite layers showed an energy preference for platy particles over nanoscrolls, especially at small layer sizes. Certain processes, such as hydration, could reduce the corresponding specific surface energy value and, as a result, could stabilize the platy morphology of halloysite at the earliest stages of particle growth under hydrothermal conditions.

Synthetic peptide and peptido-mimetic filaments and tubes represent a diverse class of nanomaterials with a broad range of potential applications, such as drug delivery, vaccine development, synthetic catalyst design, encapsulation, and energy transduction. The structures of these filaments comprise supramolecular polymers based on helical arrangements of subunits that can be derived from self-assembly of monomers based on diverse structural motifs. In recent years, structural analyses of these materials at near-atomic resolution (NAR) have yielded critical insights into the relationship between sequence, local conformation, and higher-order structure and morphology. This structural information offers the opportunity for development of new tools to facilitate the predictable and reproducible de novo design of synthetic helical filaments. However, these studies have also revealed several significant impediments to the latter process – most notably, the common occurrence of structural polymorphism due to the lability of helical symmetry in structural space. This article summarizes the current state of knowledge on the structures of designed peptide and peptido-mimetic filamentous assemblies, with a focus on structures that have been solved to NAR for which reliable atomic models are available.

The cation exchange capacity (CEC) of seven well characterized halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) in the dehydrated 7 Å form has been measured using a method based on cobalt hexammine exchange. In addition to unbuffered measurements, which varied between 2.9 and 9.3 cmol(+)kg−1, CECs were also determined over a wide pH range and proton titration measurements were conducted on two samples. The data were fitted using a constant capacitance model based on the presence of two sites: permanently charged sites and pH-dependent variable charged sites. Normalization of CEC to the average specific surface area (BET) of the halloysite samples reduces considerably the variation of CEC values for the different samples particularly over the intermediate pH range (5–9) with the average value at pH 7 equal to 8.5 cmol(+)kg−1 and a standard deviation of 1.17. Overall the CEC behaviour of the seven samples appears reasonably consistent throughout the set. Calculations based on proton titrations suggest a ratio of variable charge to basal sites for the dehydrated halloysite nanotubes of ∼3:1.

Carbon aerogels (CAs) are a unique class of high surface area materials derived by sol–gel chemistry. Their high mass-specific surface area and electrical conductivity, environmental compatibility, and chemical inertness make them very promising materials for many applications, such as energy storage, catalysis, sorbents, and desalination. Since the first CAs were made via pyrolysis of resorcinol–formaldehyde (RF)-based organic aerogels in the late 1980s, the field has really grown. Recently, in addition to RF-derived amorphous CAs, several other carbon allotropes have been realized in aerogel form: carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene, graphite, and diamond. Furthermore, the popularity of graphene aerogels has inspired research into aerogels made of a host of graphene analog materials (e.g., boron nitride, transition metal dichalcogenides, etc.), with potential for an even wider array of applications. Finally, the development of three-dimensional-printed aerogels provides the potential for CAs to have an even broader impact on energy-related technologies. Here, we will present recent work covering the novel synthesis of RF-derived, CNT, graphene, graphite, diamond, and graphene analog aerogels.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are high aspect ratio conducting nanocylinders possessing unprecedented mechanical, thermal, optical, and electronic properties. They are ideal building blocks for use in assembling a randomly oriented, highly connected nanoporous network. When this network is deposited on top of a substrate surface as a thin film with a thickness in the range of 10–100 nm, it becomes a transparent conducting film—an ubiquitous material, currently dominated by tin-doped indium oxide (ITO). This article reviews recent progress in CNT transparent conducting films and discusses fundamental properties of CNTs important for the formation of these films, methods for CNT dispersion and assembling CNTs into transparent conducting films, properties of the CNT transparent conducting films, and issues remaining to be solved in order to make these films a commercially viable alternative to ITO.

Inorganic carbon-based membranes for gas separation comprise materials that are fabricated through pyrolysis of a precursor material (often a synthetic polymer), and the more recently discovered carbon nanotubes. Fabrication, assembly into different architectures, and mechanism of operation are summarized for precursor-based carbon membranes, with a focus on selective surface flow and molecular sieving. Only preliminary work on carbon nanotube-based membranes for gas separation has been published. Their unusual transport properties, however, promise their use in gas separation in the future. In light of this application, structural properties and results relating to flow through these tubular structures are summarized.

During in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) field emission experiments, carbon nanotubes are observed to strongly diffract the imaging TEM electron beam. We demonstrate that this effect is identical to that of a standard electrostatic biprism. We also demonstrate that the nanotube biprism can be used to capture electron-holographic information.

Characterizing the physical properties of individual nanostructures is challenging because of the difficulty in manipulating the objects of sizes from nanometers to micrometers. Most nanomeasurements have been carried using scanning probe microscopy. In this article, we demonstrate that transmission electron microscopy can be a powerful tool for quantitative measurements of the mechanical and electrical properties of a single nanostructure. Dual-mode resonance of an oxide nanobelt has been observed, and its bending modulus has been measured. An in situ technique was demonstrated for measuring the work function at the tip of a carbon nanotube. The ballistic quantum conductance of a multiwalled carbon nanotube was observed at room temperature using the setup in TEM. It is concluded that in situ measurement by directly linking structure with property is a future direction of electron microscopy.

We report on non-particulate titania photoelectrodes with a unique highly-ordered nanotube-array architecture prepared by an anodization process that enables precise control over array dimensions. Under 320–400 nm illumination titania nanotube-array photoanodes, pore size 110 nm, wall thickness 20 nm, and 6 μm length, generate hydrogen by water photoelectrolysis at a normalized rate of 80 mL/W•hr, to date the most efficient titania-based photoelectrochemical device, with a conversion efficiency of 12.25%. The highly-ordered nanotubular architecture allows for superior charge separation and charge transport, with a calculated quantum efficiency of nearly 100% for incident photons with energies larger than the titania bandgap.

In this study highly-ordered titania nanotube arrays of variable wall-thickness and length are used to photocleave water under ultraviolet irradiation. We demonstrate that the wall thickness, and length, of the nanotubes can be controlled via anodization bath composition and temperature. The nanotube length and wall thickness are key parameters influencing the magnitude of the photoanodic response and the overall efficiency of the water-splitting reaction. For 22 nm inner-pore diameter nanotube-arrays 6 μm in length, with 9 nm wall thickness, upon 320–400 nm illumination at an intensity of 100 mW/cm2, hydrogen gas was generated at the power-time normalized rate of 51 mL/hr•W at an overall conversion efficiency of 12.5%. To the best of our knowledge, this hydrogen generation rate is the highest reported for a titania-based photoelectrochemical cell.
