Four laboratory studies were conducted to test the hypothesis that correct Bayesian reasoning can be predicted by two factors of task complexity — the number of mental steps required to reach the normative solution, and the compatibility between the framing of data presented and the framing of the question posed. The findings show that participants performed better on frequency format questions only when one mental step was required to solve the task and when the data were in a compatible frequency format. By contrast, participants performed more poorly on more complicated tasks which required more mental steps (in a compatible frequency or probability format) or when the data and question formats were incompatible (Studies 1 and 2). Incompatibility between data and question formats was also associated with higher reaction times (Study 2b). Furthermore, on problems that incorporated incompatibility between the data sample size and the target (question) sample size, participants performed better on the probability question than the frequency question, regardless of data format (Study 3). The latter findings highlight the ecological advantage of translating data into probability terms, which are normalized in a range between 0 and 1, and thus can be transferred from one situation to another.

The effect of fluid on the natural frequencies of a vertical rectangular lock gate is investigated. The fluid is assumed to be inviscid and incompressible having an irrotational flow field. The far boundary of fluid domain is truncated near the lock gate structure by solving the Laplace equation using Fourier half range cosine series expansion. The formulation of lock gate structure is governed using Mindlin’s plate theory. The coupled interaction between the fluid domain and the lock gate structure is established using finite element method (FEM) and a computer code is written using FORTRAN. Convergence study and validation of the formulation are carried out to minimise the computational error. The natural frequencies of lock gate coupled with and without fluid are determined for undisturbed and linearised free surface conditions. By varying extent of fluid domain, the effect on the natural frequencies of lock gate is evaluated. The results of natural frequencies obtained may be useful to the designer when the reservoir lock gate structure is exposed to the natural disasters.

In this paper, we present the static and dynamic structural characterisation of alow-mobility parallel kinematic manipulator, involving analysis of its stiffness andvibrational dynamic behaviour. The study starts by building numerical models of thebehaviour of the manipulator to be compared to experimental measurements from a prototype.For the case study, we consider a four-degree-of-freedom(x, y, z, θz) manipulatorwith prismatic actuators designed by the COMPMECH research group at the University of theBasque Country. The characterisation allows the behaviour of the static and dynamicstiffness, as well as the natural frequencies of the manipulator, to be mapped in themanipulator workspace. These maps together with kinematic, static and dynamic constraintslead to the definition of operational, static, dynamic and structural workspaces,respectively. Further, we analyse the modes of the manipulator to determine dynamicdisplacements, these being key in the performance in the machining tasks for which therobot was designed.

This paper deals with the transverse free vibrations of a system in which two beams are coupled with a spring-mass device. The dynamics of this system are coupled through the motion of the mass. The entire system is modeled as two two-span beams and each span of the continuous beams is assumed to obey the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Considering the compatibility requirements across each spring con-nection position, the eigensolutions (natural frequencies and mode shapes) of this system can be obtained for different boundary conditions. Some numerical results and experimental validations are presented to demonstrate the method proposed in this article.
