  • Everyday Memory for Everyday Tasks: Prospective Memory as an Outcome Measure Following TBI in Older Adults

  • Traumatic brain injury in older adults is an increasing problem in our aging community. Traditional functional outcome measures, such as return to work or academic achievement, as used with younger samples following traumatic brain injury are of limited use for older people. Although challenging to assess reliably, evaluation of prospective memory is gradually being included in outcome assessments following traumatic brain injury in younger samples and may be a useful index of cognitive competence in everyday life when assessing older adults following traumatic brain injury.

  • Objectives:

    Bone-anchored hearing aid recipients experience well documented improvements in their audiometric performance and quality of life. While hearing aid recipients may understate their functional improvement, their partners may be more aware of such improvement. We sought to investigate patients' partners' perceptions of functional improvement following bone-anchored hearing aid fitting.

    Methods:

    Surveys were sent to 153 patients who had received a bone-anchored hearing aid through the Nova Scotia bone-anchored hearing aid programme. The validated survey asked patients' partners to give their subjective impression of the bone-anchored hearing aid recipient's functional status.

    Results and conclusions:

    Surveys were completed by 90 patients (58.8 per cent), of whom 72 reported having a partner. Partners reported a significant improvement in hearing (p ≤ 0.0001). Partners reported improvement in 87.0 per cent of functional scenarios, no change in 12.6 per cent, and a decline in 0.4 per cent. These findings demonstrate a significant improvement in the emotional and social effects of hearing impairment, as perceived by bone-anchored hearing aid recipients' partners.

  • Objective:

    To assess the change in health-related quality of life following septal surgery.

    Study design:

    Post-intervention, health-related quality of life questionnaire.

    Participants:

    Adult patients undergoing septal surgery, recruited from two sources (the Scottish ENT outcomes study and the North Glasgow National Health Service Trust) over an 18-month period.

    Main outcome measure:

    Glasgow benefit inventory score.

    Results:

    A total of 149 Glasgow benefit inventories were returned. Of these, 13 were incomplete and were thus excluded, leaving 136 to be analysed. The response rate from the Scottish ENT outcomes study patients was 55 per cent and the response rate from the North Glasgow National Health Service Trust patients was 41 per cent, giving an overall response rate of 49 per cent. The mean Glasgow benefit inventory score was 11.3 (standard deviation 20, 95 per cent confidence interval 7.8 to 14.7). This result was similar to those of other studies using the Glasgow benefit inventory to assess septal surgery outcomes.

    Conclusion:

    Patients reported minimal improvement in their health-related quality of life following septal surgery.
