The recently introduced two-parameter infinitely-many-neutral-alleles model extends the celebrated one-parameter version (which is related to Kingman's distribution) to diffusive two-parameter Poisson-Dirichlet frequencies. In this paper we investigate the dynamics driving the species heterogeneity underlying the two-parameter model. First we show that a suitable normalization of the number of species is driven by a critical continuous-state branching process with immigration. Secondly, we provide a finite-dimensional construction of the two-parameter model, obtained by means of a sequence of Feller diffusions of Wright-Fisher flavor which feature finitely many types and inhomogeneous mutation rates. Both results provide insight into the mathematical properties and biological interpretation of the two-parameter model, showing that it is structurally different from the one-parameter case in that the frequency dynamics are driven by state-dependent rather than constant quantities.

In this paper we investigate the relationship between the sampling formula and Laplace transform associated with the two-parameter Poisson-Dirichlet distribution. We conclude that they are equivalent to determining the corresponding infinite-dimensional distribution. With these tools, a central limit theorem is established associated with the infinitely-many-neutral-alleles model at any fixed time. We also obtain the probability generating function of random sampling from a generalized two-parameter diffusion process. At the end of the paper a selection case is considered.

We study a family of Markov processes on P (k), the space of partitions of the natural numbers with at most k blocks. The process can be constructed from a Poisson point process on R + x ∏i=1 k P (k) with intensity dt ⊗ ϱν (k), where ϱν is the distribution of the paintbox based on the probability measure ν on P m, the set of ranked-mass partitions of 1, and ϱν (k) is the product measure on ∏i=1 k P (k). We show that these processes possess a unique stationary measure, and we discuss a particular set of reversible processes for which transition probabilities can be written down explicitly.

We study first passage percolation (FPP) on the configuration model (CM) having power-law degrees with exponent τ ∈ [1, 2) and exponential edge weights. We derive the distributional limit of the minimal weight of a path between typical vertices in the network and the number of edges on the minimal-weight path, both of which can be computed in terms of the Poisson-Dirichlet distribution. We explicitly describe these limits via construction of infinite limiting objects describing the FPP problem in the densely connected core of the network. We consider two separate cases, the original CM, in which each edge, regardless of its multiplicity, receives an independent exponential weight, and the erased CM, for which there is an independent exponential weight between any pair of direct neighbors. While the results are qualitatively similar, surprisingly, the limiting random variables are quite different. Our results imply that the flow carrying properties of the network are markedly different from either the mean-field setting or the locally tree-like setting, which occurs as τ > 2, and for which the hopcount between typical vertices scales as log n. In our setting the hopcount is tight and has an explicit limiting distribution, showing that information can be transferred remarkably quickly between different vertices in the network. This efficiency has a down side in that such networks are remarkably fragile to directed attacks. These results continue a general program by the authors to obtain a complete picture of how random disorder changes the inherent geometry of various random network models; see Aldous and Bhamidi (2010), Bhamidi (2008), and Bhamidi, van der Hofstad and Hooghiemstra (2009).

Starting from a sequence of independent Wright-Fisher diffusion processes on [0, 1], we construct a class of reversible infinite-dimensional diffusion processes on Δ∞ := {x ∈ [0, 1]N: ∑i≥1xi = 1} with GEM distribution as the reversible measure. Log-Sobolev inequalities are established for these diffusions, which lead to the exponential convergence of the corresponding reversible measures in the entropy. Extensions are made to a class of measure-valued processes over an abstract space S. This provides a reasonable alternative to the Fleming-Viot process, which does not satisfy the log-Sobolev inequality when S is infinite as observed by Stannat (2000).

In a sequence of independent Bernoulli trials the probability for success in the kth trial is pk, k = 1, 2, …. The number of strings with a given number of failures between two subsequent successes is studied. Explicit expressions for distributions and moments are obtained for the case in which pk = a/(a + b + k − 1), a > 0, b ≥ 0. Also, the limit behaviour of the longest failure string in the first n trials is considered. For b = 0, the strings correspond to cycles in random permutations.

In Bhatt and Roy's minimal directed spanning tree construction for n random points in the unit square, all edges must be in a south-westerly direction and there must be a directed path from each vertex to the root placed at the origin. We identify the limiting distributions (for large n) for the total length of rooted edges, and also for the maximal length of all edges in the tree. These limit distributions have been seen previously in analysis of the Poisson-Dirichlet distribution and elsewhere; they are expressed in terms of Dickman's function, and their properties are discussed in some detail.

Continuous-space-time branching processes (CSBP) are investigated in order to model random energy cascades. CSBPs are based on spectrally positive Lévy processes and, as such, are characterized by their corresponding Laplace exponents. Special emphasis is put on the CSBPs of Feller, Lamperti and Neveu and on their Poisson point process representations. The Neveu model (either supercritical or subcritical) is of particular interest in physics for its connection with the random energy model of Derrida, as revisited by Ruelle. Exploiting some connections between the partition functions of energy and the Poisson-Dirichlet distributions of Pitman and Yor, some information on the zero-temperature limit is extracted. Finally, for the subcritical versions of the three models, we compute the distribution of some of their interesting features: extinction time and probability, area under the profile (total energy) and width (maximal energy).

In this paper, we introduce a compound random mapping model which can be viewed as a generalization of the basic random mapping model considered by Ross and by Jaworski. We investigate a particular example, the Poisson compound random mapping, and compare results for this model with results known for the well-studied uniform random mapping model. We show that, although the structure of the components of the random digraph associated with a Poisson compound mapping differs from the structure of the components of the random digraph associated with the uniform model, the limiting distribution of the normalized order statistics for the sizes of the components is the same as in the uniform case, i.e. the limiting distribution is the Poisson-Dirichlet (½) distribution on the simplex {{xi} : ∑ xi ≤ 1, xi ≥ xi+1 ≥ 0 for every i ≥ 1}.

The complete set of eigenvalues is found for the (unlabeled) infinitely-many-neutral-alleles diffusion model. The transition density for the process, originally derived by Griffiths, is rederived as an eigenfunction expansion.
