The word $w=[x_{i_{1}},x_{i_{2}},\ldots ,x_{i_{k}}]$ is a simple commutator word if $k\geq 2,i_{1}\neq i_{2}$ and $i_{j}\in \{1,\ldots ,m\}$ for some $m>1$. For a finite group $G$, we prove that if $i_{1}\neq i_{j}$ for every $j\neq 1$, then the verbal subgroup corresponding to $w$ is nilpotent if and only if $|ab|=|a||b|$ for any $w$-values $a,b\in G$ of coprime orders. We also extend the result to a residually finite group $G$, provided that the set of all $w$-values in $G$ is finite.

The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the behaviour of uncountable groups of cardinality $\aleph$ in which all proper subgroups of cardinality $\aleph$ are nilpotent. It is proved that such a group $G$ is nilpotent, provided that $G$ has no infinite simple homomorphic images and either $\aleph$ has cofinality strictly larger than $\aleph _{0}$ or the generalized continuum hypothesis is assumed to hold. Furthermore, groups whose proper subgroups of large cardinality are soluble are studied in the last part of the paper.

In an effort to extend the theory of algebraic geometry over groups beyond free groups, Duncan, Kazatchkov and Remeslennikov have studied the notion of centraliser dimension for free partially commutative groups. In this paper we consider the centraliser dimension of free partially commutative nilpotent groups of class 2, showing that a free partially commutative nilpotent group of class 2 with non-commutation graph Γ has the same centraliser dimension as the free partially commutative group represented by the non-commutation graph Γ.

An element in a free group is a proper power if and only if it is a proper power in every nilpotent factor group. Moreover there is an algorithm to decide if an element in a finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent group is a proper power.

The paper discusses modules over free nilpotent groups and demonstrates that faithful modules are more restricted than might appear at first glance. Some discussion is also made of applying the techniques more generally.

The object of this paper is to study the sequence of torsion-free ranks of the quotients by the terms of the lower central series of a finitely generated group. This gives rise to the introduction into the study of finitely generated, residually torison-free nilpotent groups of notions relating to the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension. These notions are explored here. The main result concerning the sequences alluded to is the proof that there are continuously many such sequences.
